Default On the verge of buying a high mileage Tri Glide

Greetings, this is my first post, I found this place on a google search, learning what I can about these bikes. Here’s my boring story first.

i ride a 2013 Ultra Classic. Very low miles, love the bike but as I age it’s becoming a chore to ride with my wife on the back, she’s small but the whole bike is just too much weight anyway and I’m not a large man.

my local Harley dealer has a used high mileage 2015 Tri for sale, 65k. That’s more miles than I prefer, but they are giving me a great deal by taking 2 crotch rockets in on trade and paying them off for us, and taking my ultra classic and paying it off as well. (Yes I have 3 bike payments thanks to my sons). Overall it would work good for me by lowering my monthly payment overall and freeing us from all those bikes nobody rides anyway and dropping the insurance.

I was skeptical that they were giving me a fair shake until I researched the prices of these bikes. After doing the math, I figured my total payments would indeed work out fair and when they told me they were giving me a heck of a deal, I can actually concur.

now for the bike itself,,,, I’m paranoid as heck due to the mileage. But it’s all I can get. Any newer and I have to put a down payment that I just don’t have. The salesman is the same one who sold me my last 2 rides and has always been fair thus far. He told me that the bike was a local trade but the owner kept it well maintained,, and went everywhere on it including Sturgis a few times. It has the normal cosmetic wear as expected, a rip in the seat, some wear of someone getting on and off it yada yada. I rode it and it seemed to run well. It was tricky at first, but I am sure I’ll get used to it and love it. My wife loved it, and we both agreed we would use it a heck of a lot more than what we have now.

so why air my diary here? I admittedly know nothing about the Tri glides. Never even sat on one till yesterday. Is there anything I should be on the lookout for? This is a very significant investment for us. An warranty would be about $50 a month extra for 3 years, then that is that.

my searches for high mileage harleys usually yield the same results, lots of people have over 100k on theirs they changed the oil religiously and other normal maintenance with little to no repair. There’s the few that had to fix major engine failure. If that happened it would be very difficult for us to recover from! Of course it’s a used bike, anything may happen here.

I just wanted to get some honest opinions from current owners, what I might watch for, I can go get the bike today if I want to and most of me does want it.

Kevin, I can't help but I can offer you a big Texas welcome. I can also tell you riding a trike is fun.

    Kevin,

    Welcome to the forum!

Trikes are a blast to ride!

The HD Trikes have a tendency to run too hot for their own good. An important thing in looking at a used Trike is to get a Leak-Down test done to make sure there is not heat damage internally.

If it passes the test with flying colors (not just barely passes) and everything else checks out, sounds like you're going to be enjoying the world of 3 wheels very soon!

I have 45k on my 16 Only issue was the water pump, replaced under warranty. I have had several Harleys with over 80k with no issues. One was over 105k. Serviced & cared for,(show me the records) I would be content to purchase. All makes break down at some point for whatever reason. Buy it & enjoy. At 65k,Have the belt checked; ask them to replace belt before purchase. Expensive to replace & it is prob, on the verge. Best of luck.

Wow you folks waste no time. I went to get a cup of coffee and came back to all these replies already!

thanks, and I also left out that they said they did the complete inspection on it and it passed with flying colors. Of course I’m sure they are gonna tell me what I want to hear to make a sale especially the beginning of November in Illinois ha ha. But that was interesting about the leak down test, I’ll inquire about it when I go back today

Hi Kevin! No advice for you but a big WELCOME to TrikeTalk from Kerrville, Texas!

Well... one piece of advice would be to heed what these folks have just mentioned... they are very experienced and honest trikers.

    Kevin.......First Welcome to Trike-Talk..........

Get the warranty you won't regret it, Even if it's just for peace of mind....

And make sure the previous owner didn't add stuff that will be a warranty killer down the line.....And Have the dealer verify that......

I totally agree with this. I never ever buy Extended Service Plans (also know as extended warranties) on anything . . . but I always do on my Harleys and they have always paid off. I know some lucky folks put 80k plus with no problems but I have personally experienced, personally known many others and have read way too many times of costly engine failures on Harleys. The 110" motor in the CVOs I had for years was the worst but even the 103" like in this one can have problems develop that are costly to repair. The ESP will take care of that and would be a must for me if I were to purchase a TG with this many miles. Buy it , ride it, enjoy it and if it breaks let the ESP take care of it. Complete peace of mind.

Wecome to TT. I've had 3 TG's a 2010 and 2) 2014. I totaled the first 2014 last year going to the Dragon - NOT on the Dragon.

I too have had a water pump replaced. I average 35K a year. My recommendation is also = get a warranty service contract. I second having the dealer throw in a new belt.

    What color did you get?

The only big mod I did was get rid of the air shocks and get a set from Kevin at DK Customs = makes a world of difference.

The one tip I can give from experience is hit potholes, manhole covers, etc. with the front wheel = a whole lot less traumatic compared with hitting them with one of the rear wheels.

And watch out at gas pumps.....and don't slam the trunk door.

    Good luck

Yup, I am convinced. We are headed to Harley in a few and if I buy the bike which I probably will, I am definitely going to take the warranty

    Smile Hello!

    Kevin, Welcome from SW Arkansas.

Very good advice and recommendations already given.....However, you may want to at a later time, consider getting the 2015 Touring Service Manual and the Trike Supplement Service Manual. These can help you perform your own repairs and recommended Harley Service Checks. If you didn't get the Trike Owners and Boom Box 6.5 GT Infotainment Manuals, then these can also be found on eBay at reasonable prices.
