Default Intro #2, can you help me help a disabled vet?

    Hi all!

I'm Becky. I made an intro here in this thread and everyone was SO nice:

    https://www.triketalk.com/forum/thre...d=1#post709659

I'm trying to find a sidecar to go on a 97 goldwing aspencaid. This is a donor motorcycle from a very sweet man in Arizona.

Basically, a group of us in our community are banding together for a friend of ours, a disabled vet living on his payments. He's a very nice guy who helps many local vets and the aged in general. They, (he & his wife), rode a ural sidecar, but some local kids got in their garage and held the clutch in as they all ran down the street pushing it. They must have stumbled or something, because we found the bike at the bottom of a long hill with a 20 foot skidmark behind it. We think the sudden stop bent the crank.

A mechanic friend is looking at it now, but it doesn't look good. So, we found them another bike, and now we need a suitable sidecar for the new (old) goldwing.

Can everyone please put your feelers out for something? One of us is a mechanic familiar with big bikes, and the vet knows how to set up a sidecar, so we can probably make everything work.

    Thanks folks!

    Becky

Sell off the broken ural for sidecar funding?

It might be easier to sell the Honda to re engine the ural? Those engines should be fairly affordable?

The Honda platform is much better reliability and durability wise however, and will run circles around the underpowered ural.

While it won't be a direct bolt up, the ural sidecar might also be adapted to fit the Honda with some creative frame modifications, and added ballast weight to the hack. The ural driveshaft to the ural sidecar wheel would need to be disconnected.

Good luck and if nothing else, buy better locks for his garage!
Isn't it weird that in AMERICA, our flag and our culture offend so many people...but our benefits don't???

Sidecars are not cheap nor easy to do right . You would be way ahead finding one use, proven and already done. Something like this may be the easiest, fastest and lowest cost.

i would look into the ural 1st... if it was in a low gear it would certainly skid the tire... i dont believe anything would happen from that incident..

what are the symptoms ?? which lead you to think the crank is bent??

Donny talked to Van Le about it this afternoon. Van's a friend of his from another forum, and is a Ural guru. We're pretty sure it's a bent crank, so it's parked for now while they focus on the generous gift of the old goldwing.

The problem is they've already been given the goldwing, so we're all focusing on getting a sidecar for them. Because of his injuries, he can't ride a 2 wheel bike.

My point is that by the time you are done the sidecar will end up costing more than a rig ready to go. Used sidecars if found often need more work than they are worth. Mounts need to be purchased and fitted that is not cheap. A larger bike like a Goldwing generally needs a heavier sidecar so a lower cats one my not work out.

OH, ok. I see what you mean. He and a mechanic friend are gonna start taking it apart this weekend, but I really would love to find them something, anything that will work on the white bike.

i understand wanting to use the gw but sometime the almighty dollar doesnt let us do what we want..

but i am guessing you are looking at a minimum of $2500 for a good car

and depending on what it is close too another 1000 for all the brackets...

and unless this fellow has the upper body strength of hulk hogan you will NEED to put a raked tree on it so he will be able to steer it which is another 900 minimum about 4200 total

hopefully you may do better but this is a pretty realistic guess

probably no body has mentioned the raked trees...unfortunately you cant just mount a car and have it handle well!!

while the ural is not the biggest power house and is not the best for long distance the front end is already setup the car is mounted

dollar for dollar ural is the best bet...

and i would bet dollars to doughnuts the crank is fine.. again what are the symptoms

did some quick looking around... if u r dead set against the ural... this would be a great deal.. and a even greater deal better than the ural

    https://sidecar.com/680-2/topic/1988...car-friendship

1988 Honda Goldwing gl1500 with attached California Sidecar Friendship III.

Bike has 60,500 miles with raked front, trunk light, rack, passenger armrest, new front tire, etc.

Sidecar has electric lean, brakes, seatbelt, radio, trunk light, detachable top, etc.

    $5,300.

    James at 989-343-6841

all mounted.... raked trees... ready to go i would be looking at selling the ural and the white bike

i would be all over this one like white on rice if i was in the market

and it has electric lean which is nice but not a necessity... it helps compensate for the crown in the road...(the bike will tend to wander some with out it) i bet no one mentioned that either

Hi stace, thanks for that. I'm in the process of trying to log in over there, but it's not working. Ugh! I'm talking with Al in admin.

They're going to fix the ural. It means a lot to him because it's from an old friend in the military, I think. And I think it would be kinda rude to sell the goldwing because it's a gift. I'll ask them about it, but they're pretty excited about their 22 year old 'new' bike.

Ok, I was finally able to create an account there. Had to use my bf's email because for some reason that forum doesn't work well with hotmail.

I made a new post there

    https://sidecar.com/forum/topic/some.../#postid-80172

Now I'll go see if that person in your link would consider breaking up the set.

    Thanks Stacey!

id ty to beat him up a little for the whole thing

its all there ready to ride even if you get the car for 2500 which i doubt very much... you still need the tree about 900 and 1000 for the brackets and to get it mounted .... still back at 4400

and he can get on an go
