    Default HD extended warranty

Anyone thinking of getting new extended warranty from hd might want to go to HD m8 forums and read up on the changes/costs. It seems you have to pay extra for SE parts coverage. Steve Cole was the original poster. Just a heads up.

My understanding was if I did pipes and a different breather and I wanted to make sure it was covered I would have to buy all SE (screaming eagle) parts from Harley. I never could really get a definite clear answer if that meant that they were saying they would not honor the warranty if "anything" happened to the motor due to the non-Harley aftermarket parts, or were they saying they just don't cover aftermarket parts, which of course is understandable.

Now after reading his post on the HD forum it sounds just as confusing.

I guess the way I look at it is if something happens to my bike while on the extended warranty and they deny the claim because of aftermarket parts, then I'll simply cancel the policy and get as much of a refund as possible to help pay for the repair. After that I'll be back on a metric bike.

I have enjoyed both of my TGs but there are other options out there.

Or you go to another extended warranty company that is not as stringent as HD extended warranty. Mine is with Zurich and my 16 Tri Glide is modified with oil cooler, oil relocation, breather, tow hitch and Power Vision. All which would void a HD extended warranty. By the way Zurich has paid for two claims without a hitch.

I have the harley extended warranty but it is not a harley warranty, my dealer sells it, when I talked to the owner he said for harley to cover warranty I have to put on screaming eagle stuff and the harley tuner also instead of what I want, I ask him about my extended warranty that I bought from them that is basically a third party warranty I guess. He told me I could do anything that I want to my bike after the factory warranty expires which will be September of 2020, he said I could put any exhaust system that I want even if it is not harley, I also could put a trailer hitch on but he recommended that the dealer put it on so that their wouldn't be any trouble down the road if something did happen especially if I put it on, he said I know you could put it on but the warranty that I have could deny it if I did it, but if the dealer puts it on no problem.

Just food for thought, I know some people are doing stuff to their bikes and to hell with the factory warranty, they said it is my bike and I will do what I want and to hell with harley telling me what I can and not do.

If you bought the Harley branded ESP from your dealer it is administered by CNA Continental Insurance. I've had several on various bikes over the years and they all plainly stated that if the motorcycle was equipped for towing the the contract was void. I would read the contract carefully and not just rely on what the dealer told you.

I had a wheel and tire claim on my 2012 CVO Ultra. On a dark interstate highway I hit a landscape timber and bent the wheel rim and damaged the tire - actually both the front and rear tires. Luckily I did not go down. The CVO wheels are very expensive and I think both wheels and tires were almost $3k so ESP sent an inspector to look and authorize the repair. The first question he asked the service manager was 'does this bike have a trailer hitch?' If the service manager had not removed it beforehand the inspector would have no doubt not authorized the repair.

What I bought from the dealer is from Protective Asset Protection and from what I read if the dealer installs the hitch I will be covered, if not oh well, it is getting to the point if a person buys a harley they had better have some money saved up for repairs if they do stuff to void their warranty. I'm not sure if I will install a hitch or not, had them on both of my 2 wheelers but have not used the trailer since 2004, so I may not put a hitch on my trike and if I do and if by chance it voids that warranty I have so be it, I will try to get money back from this company or at least a part of it.

For what it is worth my dealer has a forever warranty but the catch is you have to have the bike serviced there or otherwise it voids the forever warranty, this forever warranty doesn't cost a thing, when buying a new bike they throw that in and some used bikes also have the forever warranty, so I will lose that since I do my own service.

They do that forever warranty down here in San Antonio, Tx. Just another way for the dealership to keep there hand in your pocket

Not familiar with that one so can't speak to exclusions or limitations. My dealer only offers the H-D branded ESP. Lots of other options out there and most are a lot less expensive.

I believe the point the article was in years gone by HD warrantied the SE parts as part of the warranty, now it seems they will not, you have to pay extra to have SE parts warrantied under the extended warranty. Just finding more ways to take our money.

I was looking at buying a bike from a dealer that offered the "forever warranty" and researched the warranty a bit. You can have the vehicle serviced elsewhere, as long as it is a legitimate shop (not your cousin's backyard). You only need to let them know where you are getting it serviced before you do so.......

Yes I knew that and I forgot to say that is my post, the bad thing there aren't that many independent shops here that I would take my bike to and trust, sorry to say that for this size of town but that is the way it is and the ones that were really good closed up shop and retired.

I put pipes on my 2019 and soon after installed a different breather. None of the parts were Harley or even sold by Harley.

While visiting the Paducah area I had the oil migration issue taken care of under factory warranty, no questions asked. To be honest I got the feeling that they would have taken care of this issue no matter if I was under extended warranty or factory warranty.

It makes me wonder if all of this is looked at differently from one dealer to the next.

I started out with the ESP. Dumped it even before I took delivery. Bought the one from Jim Palmer @ Motorcycle Agent.com Much better coverage for a longer period of time. About half the cost of the ESP. Jim is a former Marine. He discounts for prior service, first responder, HOG membership, MCRSF rider course. Harley doesn't discount squat ! Purely a money generator for the dealership and the MOCO. Better tire and wheel pkg too. Jim also blows just about any other carrier out of the water when it comes to full coverage mc ins.

The entire HD extended warranty, and Factory Warranty, has turned into a bit of a cluster ever since HD colluded (Jack's word, which I agree with) with the EPA.

About 8 months ago I mentioned that I had heard about a 3rd party extended warranty that was coming out that would cover the bike from new, and NOT be affected by the agreement HD made with the EPA which does nothing significant for pollution, but does put more money in HD's pocket.

At the time I heard it would be available this last August...but it was not.

However, it looks like it may be now. I am doing a bit more research.

Hopefully the result will be that we will be able to purchase an extended warranty, that overlaps with the factory warranty, costs less than the HD extended warranty, and is NOT restricted on what mods you can do by the illegal and unfair EPA/HD agreement.

Kevin, that would be great, my warranty is going to run out in the spring, so I’ve been looking around can’t wait to see what you find out, because right now it looks like I’m going with harley, but really don’t want to

    great forum, thanks everyone

I would also be very interested in this alternative to the ESP. I have about 2 years left on mine, but since I have a PV and already had the conversation with the Service Manager here at MCHD, where he told me that if they connect Digital Tech to my bike it will find the PV and automatically flag the ESP. Said to remind him when I brought the bike in for service and they would not connect, but not sure I want to take that chance. There were no issues with my '14 TG and the PV and warranty or ESP, but when I traded in for the '17 and didn't realize that HD had really clamped down, I just moved the PV to the new bike because it runs so much better with it.
