    So....

    Bought a Ford Explorer Sport in April 2018 - brand new.

    Ford original manufacturer’s warranty is:

    Bumper to Bumper = 36,000 miles or 3 years

    Power Train = 5 years or 60,000 miles

    Current Mileage = 12,036. And 1yr+7months into the 3 year BumpertoBumper section

    I keep getting a threatening letter from an independent warranty service that I had better contact them immediately about buying an extended warranty contract or else I’ll never be able to buy an extended warranty contract. I know this is just hi-pressure sales talk.

    My question is: At WHAT point do I really need to purchase an extended warranty contract and WHICH warranty service company would you recommend? Thanks!

    Most extended warrantee companies are good up to like 10-15 years and less than 150K ... yes ... I recently got a threatening letter saying my warrantee on the Jeep that is in month 2 of a 60 month warrantee is dangerously close to expiring ... and I need to renew it or I won't be covered ... let not your mind be troubled ... you have paperwork from Ford and that is way better than any extended warrantee.

    There are a lot of different thoughts on auto extended warranties. I for one believe with today's modern auto's if the problem has not cropped up in the 3 years then most of the systems are good to go. So I do not buy them.

    The real issue becomes one of user comfort.

    Do you have an independent garage that you trust available should the need arise?

    Do you keep up on the preventive maintenance?

    How long do you keep your vehicles?

    Depending on the answers there are different suggestions.

    The shorter you keep a car the less need for the warrantee.

    The less miles you put on the car the less need.

    I would add one thing that not a lot of dealers will tell you.

    If you trade a car that has miles or time left over on the extended warranty or gap insurance ... you are entitled to a refund.

    I have a couple dealers I use. One for bike/trikes and a couple for other vehicles. They all will do the same for me.

    My recent purchase, I traded a Toyota Tacoma I had for 19 months for the Jeep. The dealer called the extended warrantee company and had them calculate the refund I was do and transfer that to the new extended warrantee on the Jeep. The difference was like $400 which the dealer and I agreed to split 50/50.

    The Gap Insurance is a little different and you have to request the refund, and it's not a lot.

    My thoughts on extended warrantee's varies. If I buy new, which I will never do again (I let someone else take the depreciation), I agree with Ted ... not needed. Most problems will rear their ugly head early on and the manufacture's warrantee will cover them.

    Conversely, since I buy used and "look for deals", you never know when the after market warrantee will come in handy.

    For example. A few years back, I lost my mind and fell in love with a Tibaron (Spanish for Shark I think). Cute little car that was fast, handle like it was on rails and way fun to drive. I bought it as a "second car" mainly because I had a Ford F350 Dually .. not a car you want to drive in traffic ... but great for work and pulling my 30' Toy Hauler. Anyway, I digress.

    I purchased the extended warrantee. Never had a major mechanical issue, engine or tranny, but had lots of "stuff that went wrong. A/C compressor, evaporator, expansion valve and discharge hose ... $2500. The rear window defroster didn't work when winter came .. $650. Front cv joints and shafts, probably because I liked driving it like I stole it ... $1200. Idle Sensor (at a stop light, the engine rpm's with the clutch in went to 2500 and wouldn't come down at idle, was fine with the clutch in) ... $500. Almost $5000. Should be noted, those are dealer prices and include labor. I probably could of done the repairs for about $2500 to $3000. I paid $800 for the warrantee. Well worth the money.
