    Default Just odd rememberances ...

I was responding elsewhere when I remembered an occurrence from long ago. Was just reminiscing with an old buddy over cards the other night, recalling some past events. Maybe it was "Do you remember that time … yada yada?" that put it in my head? See, he was a Trooper from 1985-2014 while I was from 1978-2010 so our careers overlapped and we became close friends. We both also spent years on the accident reconstruction team, a specialty. We've killed a lot of coffee too.

One such event that was funny was once I stopped a fast moving pickup pulling a empty trailer south on I-81 with Pa. tags, just some females in it. Another Trooper found a bunch of bikes sitting on the shoulder of I-81 just down the road near about the same time, they had a "mouthpiece type person" with them … whom talked them all into tickets. I quickly let my stop go (with a warning only) to go back him up. Was there with him when here come that pickup & trailer running maybe 45 or 50 mph as it passed us by, not in a rush at all now. Guess the lady driving was heeding my warning maybe? Funny thing, bikers had mostly Pa. tags too. I didn't write anything, but my buddy sure did, but hey, I offered.

Another time we got a call to a multivehicle wreck on I-81 South during especially heavy traffic volume. Got to scene, no one was hurt, no tows even needed. We flipped a coin, he lost so he worked the 3 or 4 vehicle rear ender type wreck. Traffic had slowed to near a stop for some reason, a "vehicle 1 bumped vehicle 2 knocking it forwards into vehicle 3 and so on"… type deal, mostly information exchanged and statements recorded and maybe a ticket to instigator. One or rear most vehicle was a pickup truck pulling a 2 or 3 axle enclosed cargo trailer. It was also a very hot day, easily near 100 degrees and humid. I recall my buddy completing the info forms, I helped, as well as recording statements.

The driver of the pickup pulling the trailer was a 20-30 year old statuesque blond of great proportions, jeans & tee. Her mother was there as was her father, but her mother was sitting in my police car with me with AC on max because of the heat, I was just chatting with the mother at this stage. All of the drivers ahead were gone, it was just my buddies police car in front of the pick up & trailer, then in front of me was the white trailer and pick up. I had my strobes & flashers on as well as flares out behind us for a good ways. The daughter who was driving was talking to the Trooper and her dad, then I lost sight of my fellow Trooper & her Dad as they walked around in front of the pick up & trailer. She walked back between the trailer & guardrail and towards us where she was blocked from their view or traffic, her back towards my buddy's car in front of the pick up, and calmly yanked her tee up around her neck, was no bra, and adjusted things and wiped sweat off I guess, it was quite a show. She eased the tee back down adjusting things as she did. I guess she forgot we (I and her mother) were in my car just yards in front of her, I guess I was staring, then I looked across at her mother who was looking at me watching her daughter's show. I was at a loss for words for a moment. Her mother just laughed and said "that's my girl and her girls". I suggested she wait 30 miles before telling her daughter what we witnessed. My buddy was jealous when I told him over supper … he missed the show.

Your buddy has my luck CrystalPistol. I always miss the good stuff. Or my wife is the one that points it out because I'm looking somewhere else.

    Thank you both!

Memories often just need a trigger to fill the head fresh. I was a Trooper 31+ years, retired as a Master Trooper, I know I was squared away too. Besides road duties, I taught some in Acc. Recon. & DUI, P-Driving,and Radar classes. I was on a reconstruction team subject to those call outs for 22 years … besides regular duties. I never sought Sgt. etc. as once you start up that trail, you really should keep going, besides, I had the best job I could have wanted … and due to timing of raises vs hire date, made more than even my Sgts & First Sgt. Been retired now just over 10 years but so much of it is like yesterday still.

One day in the early 2000s I was moving north bound on I-81 and had my Hawk radar set, it had stationary, opposite direction moving, and same direction moving capabilities. Had a front and rear antenna as well. It was late evening, dark dusk like, traffic light, I was running near 65, here come a car fast overtaking me (the bar light's silhouette was not as easy to spot a ways off as the old bubble lights). I estimated in the '80s easy, I started checking the speed. Patrol speed was right, target speed was up in the high 80s, good tone, I varied my speed, target speed stayed steady, patrol read-out varied with my speed, good tones … good track. Short to say, this one was in the bag.

This lone car got near me, I guess driver saw decals, braked and moved to right lane behind me. I slowed to in the 40-50 range, car "tippy-toed" past me. I lit it up, made the stop in safe place with no guard rail so we could ease over into grass some. Was a lone 50 ish female, nice looker, she pleaded for a break, I secured the OL & reg. Was talking to her as I glanced at the OL, then it hit me. She made suggestions and I interrupted her. I told her "I gave you warnings the last two times I stopped you, this time is gonna be different" … she said "What do you mean?" I told her that I recalled stopping her twice in the past years, told her where I stopped her, told her that one was for 72 in a 65 even. In fact, we were then very close to where I had stopped her for that 72 in a 65 years earlier. The first time I stopped her was in the very early '80s not long after I transferred to this area but the limit was 55 then. She was surprised, even shocked, her mouth dropped open, she asked "How do you even remember that?". I read the town or post office address off her OL, told her that as many trips as I had made to Richmond in all my years, seeing that same name on an exit sign, she was the only person I had ever met that actually lived there (not Richmond, but near by and smaller Manakin Sabot). It was that place name triggered the memories. Yeah, I wrote it this third time but just for "speed 80/65-MR", not RD. She let me know that she had never been stopped by anyone else, I asked "How would you even know, you didn't recall me." She laughed, said that as many times as she had traveled from MS to Roanoke, I was the only Trooper she ever got stopped by.

Another night … in the '90s as I had a Chevy then. I was working midnight shift when along about 1 or 2 AM car come by in the 90s, it was hauling butt. I followed it, pacing it South on I-81 a short ways then it went right to I-64 West where I stopped it near Rt 11. Was a Pa. car, two young ladies in it, maybe early '20s, dressed to attract too. Driver was very dark, wearing cut off BJ short shorts, a red with white polka dots tied in front very brief halter top that barely covered "her girls". Passenger was a red head, pale skinned, also dressed nicely but somewhat less provocatively. They were cute. I got the driver's OL & car reg in hand, told the driver of speed ands limit and she asked if I could tell them how to get to Norfolk, Va. I said it was "24,000 miles straight ahead". She laughed, said "What you say?". I explained that she had just turned onto I-64 WEST going to West Virginia, she asked how could that be. I asked how she got here (Lexington) trying to go from Philly to Norfolk. She explained that they were in Philly when their pimp called and told them to get to Norfolk, that a carrier was coming in. She said he gave her directions, even showed me her notes. I told her she probably took a wrong turn at Richmond off I-95 onto I-64, explained the mistake. She called her pimp then while I wrote a ticket. She was rude to him too, but they both were laughing when not on the phone. She didn't actually use the word"pimp", but when she said "our man" and I asked "who's that?", they looked at me in awe and the driver asked "Are you for real?", then she explained. Stops like that just stay with you, never saw anyone so happy to have a big ticket, but then I did get them turned around, it was my duty.

There's more. DUI stops, wrecks, plastic safety chains, 125mph GLs, chases, plane crashes, shootings, famous people, embarrassments, just funny, just not so funny, weird, fastest MC (147mph stationary radar on I-66 in 1980, headed into Fairfax County from PWCo.), fastest T-T (104 mph . radar & CB got him) or fastest car (It was a pace pulling away at 125 until he run up behind two T-Ts dragging up grade) … etc … but I'll stop and let others have a turn.

In another vein, just occurred to me, I never stopped a Trike for speeding or RD

... just never caught one I rekon …

Sitting here, gonna go face the chilly basement in a few …

Looking at old pics, recalling past rides, good times, fun.

Was leading a group down to NC years ago, we often chatted on the CB, and suddenly Norb asked me on the CB how high Mt. Mitchell was (our destination for lunch). I said "Six thousand, six hundred , eighty four feet … why do you ask?" as if I knew, with authority even. It was a guess, I only really knew it was over 6,000 feet. He said "Wow, how do you do that?". "Do what?" I asked. Then he and his wife asked me who said … something … in 1789. I blurted out "Ben Franklin" with no hesitation. Was just the first name I thought of when he said 1789. Don't recall the quote, just the year. Long quiet spell, then I heard him and his wife talking about my answer, she had keyed the mic I think, they were amazed.

Another day, another trip, we visited another chapter's fundraiser. Was a group of us, and lunch time (Chili Cook-off), games stopped, long line for Chili. I was standing there with a few guys, we were at the throw station for the Corn Hole toss game. I picked up a bag of beans, gave it a toss, and it went through the hole and I don't think it even touched the sides. People noticed. Fellow from another chapter said "Do that again" … and I said "I will … just after you do it the first time". He picked up a bag, tossed it … but missed thankfully. I went on and got my Chili.

One other day leading a ride across Virginia, we passed some cows, CR told us on the CB that he and his wife saw some cows a few days earlier with black on each end and white in the middle around their bellies. I said "Oreo Cows". He laughed, then said he knew I'd know? I was surprised he didn't know. Anyway, as we rode on, I elaborated about other cows that were black on the ends, but maybe green or pink or yellow in the middle and why they were so. The one's with green were because they eat a lot of mint, the ones with pink had gotten into granny's strawberry patch, they got to go to market sooner. The yellow ones were that way from eating lemons, they were very rare, raised by a farmer in south east Ky. and that they were highly prized for the flavor of their beef. The green ones were a mess, milk was bad, usually they were isolated soon after turning green and they usually recovered. I made up more, it was all good for laughs, I would just add little bits as the time passed. This went on for a long way. That afternoon, at a meal stop, one wife came over to our table and asked me in a really low voice if I was serious about the cows, said she had never heard of them.

    Cool Change of Pace

I was running a mechanic shop in the early 1980's and was in need of another mechanic to assist the two that I already had working for me.

After several weeks of interviewing applicants and being disappointed in the skills or experience, one of my mechanics said he had someone perfect in mind.

He claimed his girlfriend that picked him up everyday after work was an auto mechanic .... kinda like Marisa Tomei in "My Cousin Vinny". That was long before the movie came out though.

Well she stopped in early one Friday for an interview.

I asked the basic knowledge questions and was surprised to get some relevant answers, but she was 5' 5" tall and barely weighed 100 lbs.

I told her that our work was mainly on heavy equipment and trucks and how would she possibly handle the heavy parts on this equipment and the tools needed.

She said "she had helpers" ....... helpers ??????

She proceeded to lift her t-shirt and show me her helpers.

Not being prepared for the interview to go this way, I just told her, without a blush, I couldn't afford to hire her and the helpers at the same time.

    Interview over.

I later asked my mechanic, what was up with his girlfriend ??

He said she had been having a hard time with keeping jobs lately.

    Ya Think ????

Crystal... your group rides with CB chatter sounded like ours did! We had a LOT of fun with them - made the long distances to locations seem short. We had one guy in the group who was pretty gullible and we yanked his chain fairly often.

One day we were riding down to the Texas hill country from west Texas to go camping when someone started this:

Did ya’ll hear on the news last night about that woman in Midland who got shot?

    N-o-o-o-o...nobody had heard about it.

Yeah... she got shot and the bullet is in her YET !!!!!!!

    In her YET you said?

Yeah... in her YET!!! Dang... can you believe it? WOW..that must be miserable - poor woman!

Silence on the radio.... you could hear the silence....

Finally the gullible guy couldn’t stand it.... “what’s a YET”?

Poor Sam... we never let him live that one down!

Be my guest! During the radio silence on the road - you could see the bikes weaving around in the lane due to their drivers laughing so hard...they knew Sam wasn’t going to get it. Yep...”on the road again” with that bunch was so much fun!

I liked to entertain while leading, it seemed to keep them attentive.

Wait...you're stripping while rolling down the road???

Maybe you don't mean that kind of entertainment.

Having had a birthday recently, I took the wife down to the Christiansburg Cracker Barrel off I-81 to meet her brother & sister in law for a late lunch today, they drove maybe an hour, we drove maybe 1hr&45 min. Great time talking, I had Uncle Hirshel's Favorite with apples, biscuits were fresh soft & fluffy. Coffee was good. Good waitress too.

Anyways, as we traveled down one leg of I-81, I passed by a spot I often used "back in the day" and I recalled that it was there that I was sitting one night maybe in the mid 1980s, working a little stationary radar, listening to Art Bell probably, waiting on a fast one. Back then, traffic on I 81 was light on midnight shift, mostly trucks. Listening on the CB, I could tell when I had been spotted.

Well, after a spell, a large car went by HAMMER DOWN. I let off the hold button which activated the radar. I got my high pitch tone anfd reading, was up in the 80s, then the whole rear of the trailer lit up red. BIRD DOG too. I stopped the truck a ways up the road, nice lady got out of the truck and sauntered back to meet me beside the trailer, she had a log book & papers in hand. She said she had everything, I told her I didn't see a bird dog (radar detector) or a toothbrush. She said she'd go back and get the bird dog, but she asked if she really needed a toothbrush, I said it was not as likely as I first thought. She asked me to not wake up her husband in the sleeper, so I just let her go alone. She come back to the car & had a seat on the passenger side.

As I was writing stuff out to run a license /wanted check, etc, I notice her last name was the same as mine but she was from way out west. Her middle initial was also the same as the first letter of her & my last name. I asked her what her full name was, she told me, repeating her last name, her maiden name and married name were the same, but she quickly added that she was not related to her husband besides marriage. I remarked that after growing up in that trash, I would think she knew better than to marry into it too. She blowed up, I mean she was like instantly mad, then she leaned forward to look over at my name tag with a scowl on her face … I guessed to make a complaint … then she read my name out loud "&%$$#*" (my last name from my name tag) and then she instantly deflated & laughed real good. She really was a good sport, but I think she or her husband were from a line that broke off from here and moved out west in the mid 1800s. My mother was big into Geneology then, she was sure of it when I told her.

I'm going to bed …. goodnight all!

Yup , my LEO friends can tell some funny stories that can’t be made up !

Being only a pease officer , I usually deal with non speaking aliens, a lot of hand signals go on , along with summons given out . Then they instantly remember how to speak English. Too late bucko
