Just seems to me that more would be sold if it was open to all members

If only each if you actually knew what goes on behind the scenes in building and running a large forum, you would not be so critical of someone who actually does know what goes on.

Did you know that when everyone had access to PMs and Classifieds, multiple members with items listed in classifieds were contacted via PM by hackers who asked for and obtained their email addresses and phone numbers and some were hacked? A skilled hacker can to a lot with just that information.

This is why PMs and and classifieds were shut down, to protect you members. I have been hacked multiple times and I will tell you you do not want a Russian hacker gaining all of your information. I have learned how to protect myself but most here have not.

Yes the Gold Club membership subscription certainly does help keep the site alive and it helps pay for professional security of the server as well as upgrades and patches to protect the site and all its members, both paid and free.

Why do you think all the independently owned forums have either sold out to the giant corps or shut down? It takes way too much time, skills and money and devotion for an average working person to own and run a large forum. You either sell it or monetize it in one way or another. I love this site and our members and I will never sell it or shut it down.

OK, after venting, here are my thoughts. I'd like to see everyone have access to classifieds as the benefits to all in terms of buying and selling would no doubt be positive, but I dont know of any way to do it without allowing email and or phone numbers to be publicly posted, which has been proven to be risky to the posting member's security, this is why most forums do not allow it. Gold Members have the option to post their contact info, but I think few if any have so far.

I am open to suggestions...

Just a thought ... make the buying and selling forum like the Jungle ... only you can approve access ... maybe a waiver signing to gain access ... take you off the hook and control spam hits more readily.

Most of us on Triketalk recognize the fact just how much we enjoy the site. We enjoy a well-managed site run by people who care and enjoy trikes, bike, gatherings, etc. I would just like to thank Randy and team for their work and love they put into keeping it a greatly friendly site.

I can verify after 30 years in Information Technology management I can tell you it is a thankless job and an expensive one. We enjoy being on a site not bothered by pop up advertisements or worrying about being hacked.

How about making the WTB section somewhat fee based? This way it keeps the forum running and protected.

Maybe a small percentage of the sale goes to the forum?

I have been on other forums and never needed a phone number. Contacted seller made details thru PM's and used paypal.

There is always some sort of risk but sure some sort of plan can be decided.

I have some items someone could use on this site.

PMs cannot be limited to any certian section, only by member groups. Opening them to all members is a problem. A good example of what I have dealt with on a regular basis is the following.

Admin & Moderators can recieve PMs from ANY member and send PMs to any member. Below is a screenshot of a PM I just recieved four days ago regarding a Classified post I made looking to buy a GL1800 Tall Rider Seat for a customer of mine. The ad is still up:

To most anyone, the message seemed totally legit and if I had blindly trusted this member, like most of our members would have, I would have just responded to his email. But knowing what I know, I did not and started researching Mr "kibee from Florida".

1- I Google searched his contact email address greatnyben(at)yahoo(dotcom) and got this Red Flag #1:

2- I went to the linked gulfcoastgunforum.com thread and found that this same person was registered there as "KDU from Missouri" and was attempting to scam members with items for sale. Feel free to take a look for yourself on the gulfcoastgunfoum, the thread link I listed is a safe link to that site.

3- As Admin, I have access to keebeem's registration data including his IP address, which did not match his stated Florida location, and TT member registration email address: ca0404020(at)gmail(dotcom), Red Flag #2:

4- A Google search of his registration email address resulted in Red Flags #3,4,5,6:

5- I followed the links to National Lighting Owners forum post and offshoreonly.com and found that he had scammed others, one for $500 for parts he never sent.

This is why I origionally closed PMs will not open up PMs to general membership.

My OPINION....If you don't want to spend 100 bucks to keep this Forum alive....

Just sell your unwanted stuff on/from your front lawn... And as a bonus you'll meet some very interesting people .......

If your local radio station has a buy/sell/trade program you can sell through that program and get local buyers. Here in Lovington the local station runs 'Tradio' where the locals deal with each other. Ebay and Craigslist (but you get scammers there).
