    Default GPS Map Updates

So Harley is ignoring any Owner with a Mac. I went to the dealer today and they can't update the maps either. You have to have a windows machine.

So, I called customer service ... or should I say lack of service ... they advised me that my best option would be to have a friend that has an IBM computer assist me to get the app updated. I don't know anyone with an IBM that could do that. I asked if Harley was actually saying they didn't care about any Owner that preferred macs. I was told not at all, Harley likes all their owners. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was told he was the highest person in customer service. When I asked tp speak to Willie G., he actually hung up ... I'm upset.

Apparently, the procedure to update the maps is as follows. You need to go to Naviextras.com (which I did), download their toolbox software (again, only works on IBM), then you create a flash drive that "marries" itself to your bike, the flash drive downloads info from your bike. Then you have to take the drive to your IBM, plug it into the toolbox, it will then provide you a list of Maps available to your bike for purchase. You then purchase the maps, download them to the flash drive married to the bike, take it to the bike and download the maps to the bike. Really, I'm supposed to go through all that??? With a friend???

Nope .... I think I'm officially looking for a new ride!

or buy a used IBM Laptop for $200.00 and save a lot of money. Because all motorcycle GPS use Microsoft, including Honda and Indian. I am surprise your dealer won't update for you or didn't you ask?

The "New" service manager was unaware that the maps were even able to be updated.

I talked to my friend Don, while I was waiting for my audiology appointment at the VA, I'm gonna go to his place next week, he'll get it on the USB flash drive with his new machine ... still PO'd about it ... but truth be told, I'd have to find a "perfect" trike to replace the FBG.

Especially after Randy puts a rake kit on it.

Hmmm .... I think this is a first for me ... quoting myself ... I just wanted to expound a bit. And maybe explain my rant.

The two techs in my service department that work on the high end bikes (The ones that require lots of removing stuff to get at what your working on) at my local dealer are fantastic. The trouble with my dealer's service department is now, and has always been that the people you need to talk to when seeking service are morons ... I've talked to the owner about this many times (he was a pool customer when I was doing pools) and his philosophy is that if he spends less with the service writers, and service managers, he can spend more on keeping his best techs.

Not a terrible thing, except, "the fish always stinks from the head down". If the face of your service department doesn't even know you can and probably need to update the maps in the GPS, what does that say about your entire department.

In my neck of the woods (okay desert), especially when I do the meandering rides, an accurate set of maps has always been a must. I can't tell you how many times I have been somewhere I've never been before, the GPS is a great tool to get me home. My plan, even if the onboard GPS gets updated maps, I will continue to carry the Zumo 550 with the lifetime updated maps, I would really like to clean up the right handle bar by making it a mount the mount when I need it kind of thing ... going back to the Ciro dash mount fairly clean and unobtrusive when the Garmin is not mounted.

I plan to mount it more to the right side of the dash. I like the GoPro mounted in the center, and moving this to the right allows an unobstructed view of the dash. This also allows the wires to be hidden in the "cubby" under it when not in use. When I don't need to have the Zumo, it will just be a ball on the dash that can also have a phone mounted on.

HD is really going in the wrong direction with their High prices for items and service. I'm out of warranty anyway, so if needed I go to an independent shop. I'm Old school on the GPS and XM Radio. They work just fine and I can do a Free update on my Mac.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Default Update on the Medical Stuff

So a buddy of mine said he saw a killer deal on a windows 10 machine at a local pawn shop.

Went this morning and checked it out. Pretty good deal. Only paid $80 out the door including tax.

    Here it is:

Fairly long process, but, the FBG is doing the update as I speak

I figured what the heck ... can use this new to me machine for my power vision stuff too ... my little netbook was hard to see ... LOL.

    Default What a process

I gotta admit, the Jeep map updates are way easier ... type in the VIN, buy the maps, they send you a thumb drive ... install.

With HD, you create a flash drive with Naviextra.com's "toolbox". Next you take it to your trike, it "fingerprints with the trike (I'm guessing this step is like when a power vision "marries" itself to an ecm). The flash drive then goes to your computer. Sign into Naviextras, and after the toolbox verifies the finger printing, it shows you options of maps to buy.

Pay for the maps and then download them to the flash drive. This step took well over an hour. Probably because my $80 computer is sorta slow. After the download finishes, it runs home to momma to verify. When that's over, you take it to the trike, with the trike in acc mode, the trike now verifies the image by running home to momma again. The upload of the image took about an hour. I had the bike on the battery charger and the voltage didn't drop below 12v.

    Start:

    Middle ish:

Size: 393.2 KB

    Done:

    Name: Map Update Finished.jpg
Views: 167
Size: 256.1 KB

So ... my $80 investment worked just fine. Haven't taken the trike out yet, we have a "new stretch of road" here in town that always confuses the GPS, we'll see if it is even on the new maps

It did show the trike was at my house.

The NA is for North America and 2020 obviously is for this year.

As a side note, I used a credit card that has a $300 limit for this purchase. It's kind of my test account I use for online purchases. So, the "Made in the USA company Harley Davidson, gets it's map updates from a country in Hungary, at least that's who got paid for them.

How the heck does Hungary know what our roads look like ... You can't make this stuff up.

Hi Fuzzy. I thought there was a Windows emulator out there that would make windows only programs think your Mac was a Windows machine.

On another note, that new 2020 Spyder RT is a really great looking machine.

The program you refer to is Parallels ... I have it, doesn't work very well with any program using a usb device, power vision and the map updater are two that come to mind. Works really well with word, excel, etc. I hardly ever use it, I purchased it mainly because Safari didn't play nice with the department of revenue in Colorado. I used it for awhile until Foxfire came out with a Mac browser ... then I used that.

Anyway .. I now have my $80 win 10 machine set up for Harley maps and WinPv for the power vision. All in all, a pretty good use of $80. Of course ... do you have any idea how much BBQ I could get in Texas for $80 Hmmm ... maybe not so good after all.
