Question TriGlide - changing to adjustable rear shocks.

Thinking of going for adjustable rear shocks and ditching the air rides. I believe they are 13.5 inch, but local shop is saying I can use 13 inch without any problem. Anyone else have experience please?

Lots of options for that. Depending on the year. You'll get lots of replies recommending the DK Customs lift kit with coil over shocks. It's what I put on mine. If you get the package I believe it comes with 14" shocks and a bracket with two position options. Easy and fun to install. I'm very satisfied with the fit on my '18 trike.

1+ for the DK setup. I had mine moved over from my '11 model to my new '20. Much better than stock!

Here's a LINK to a Report on Rear Suspension.

The shocks PosseRider has up is a good deal.

If a person with a DK lift already can a person just buy the shocks and be ok, I realize they are only 13" instead of 14" but what I have been told with the combo kit the lift is basically stock and the lift is in the shock itself, just curious if the 13" pro action shocks will work good

Over the years we have evolved the Harley Trike Lift Kits. Below is the progression:

    Lift Kit

    Comfort Lift Kit

    Convertible Comfort Lift Kit

Convertible Comfort Lift for 14" shocks

If you have a 2013 or older Tri Glide you can use any of the DK Custom Lift Kits (except the one for the '14 shocks) with the 13" Pro-Action Shocks or the 13" Twin Adjustable shocks.

If you have a 2014 or newer Tri Glide/Freewheeler it is best to use a Convertible Comfort Lift™ with either of the shocks listed above.

At this LINK is a list of the different DK Custom Lift Kits.

If I'm reading this right I can order the 13 1/4" shocks for my 2018 triglide since I already have the convertible lift and it will give me the same ride as the 14" shocks and lift kit since not much difference in the 14" lift kit and shock combo, hope I'm saying this right

It will give you the same ride height. It will not give the same ride quality.

Depending on the roads you travel, and the rider/passenger/luggage weight, you may or may not notice the improved ride the 14" shocks have over the 13".

The reason we came up with the idea of the Trike Series Shocks™ was to get the extra travel afforded by the longer shock. The extra travel allows the shock to be set a little softer so that it will absorb the smaller bumps better, while still having enough travel to Not bottom out on the larger bumps.

That said, the 13" shocks are a radical improvement over the OEM shocks...literally makes it feel like a different trike. Going to the 14" over the 13" is an incremental improvement...not nearly as radical as going from OEM to the 13's.

For example, when Mary and I are riding on a trip, we are usually a combined weight of around 475 lbs (me, her & luggage). We can really feel the improvement of the 14" over the 13".

But when I am riding 1 up (200 lbs), I feel a much smaller improvement of the 14" over the 13".

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for replying so quick, I understand the 1 inch difference in height of shock, it would make a big difference in ride I would imagine. I ride solo dang near all the time and I don't travel so to speak so not loaded down there, guess I will have to think this over and decide.

I know when I bought my 2016 triglide it already had a lift kit on it and experimenting with air shock pressure and tire pressure I finally got a ride that was decent, not perfect but I was happy anyway. Should have kept that one but hind sight now, LOL

    Kevin,

My 2020 TG has the lift kit added.

What shock would you advise me to get, the 14 or 13 inch?

Almost all solo travel but I do have equipment that I carry such as photo stuff.

The least expensive would be the 13", that way you could use the lift kit you already have, whereas if you got the 14" you would need to get the Convertible Comfort Lift™ specifically made for the 14" shocks.

Beside the above monetary considerations, the following also enter in-

How much do you weigh? If you and your luggage are over 250 lbs, then the difference felt between the 13 and the 14 are greater.

What kind of roads do you travel...the rougher the roads, the more you will notice the 14 inch having more travel than the 13.

Do you ride long days? Toward the end of long days of riding, the more comfortable the ride, the less fatigue there will be.

How important is having the most plush possible ride to you? The 14's will be better than the 13's, but if you are not that sensitive to the smaller bumps, then the little extra plushness of the 14's may not be worth it to you since the 13's are already a very nice ride quality.

I am 250 lbs with luggage when one up. I've ridden with both the 13's and 14's one up. For a daily rider, I might not spend the extra on the 14's. But, even one up, for riding all day long, I would go for the 14's...they are not that much more and on longer times in the saddle they really make a difference.

2-up it is a no brainer for myself and Mary (450-475 combined w/ luggage), the 14's are much better.

    Hope that helps.

    Kevin,

    Thanks for the response.

I weigh 190 pounds and I am a short ass and vertically challenged (I was good at rugby though when I stated at a Holiday Inn Express)

Most roads around Seattle (save for some HWY's or I-5) are OK but some smaller roads have numerous pot holes (Sound Transit initiative 3 was meant to fix roads ahhhh).

My $681.00 car tabs per year haven't done xxxx with the roads in nearly 3 years!!!!

So I travel light, but when the GF wants to ride along (she is svelte) that weight increases according to the size of the make up bag, 6 pack, JD and coke et al (you get my drift) joking of course!

So me thinks the 13 inch may be OK, but I want to set the current TG pre-load up first and see what I get. Can I ask you what is the approximate price for the shocks are?

    Take care and ride safe,

    Jon.

    Hey Jon,

On the 13" you have two great choices-

Twin Adjustable that you can see HERE (525)

    and

PA that you can see the details on HERE (825)

They ride the same, you cannot tell the difference between the two of them in ride quality. See Report on comparison HERE.

There are differences. The TA's are made in Italy and have a 2 year warranty, the PA's are made in the USA and have a Lifetime warranty, and there is the price difference.

    Thanks for the information.

I will buy USA as I am not happy with the quality from Italy.
