Default Wax on - Wax off

We just purchased a pearl white 2012 Goldwing with the CSC trike conversion. I am looking for ideas on cleaners and wax/polish, also good products for daily detailing. This is a one owner 35,000 mile unit that was meticulously cared for before being replaced with new. Excited for purchase and want to continue with good care and maintenance. Thanks in advance. Ken

Perfect. Duh. Just sitting here in South Dakota in -10 Fahrenheit with wind chills near -20. I am dreaming of the riding we will be doing in Texas for 10 days next month and our trips planned for this coming summer. Our nearest dealer is 50 miles from here but I will be traveling past later this week. Cabin fever may have dulled my brain. 🤪 We have ridden most of the Midwest on two wheels and are excited about adventures with our new (to us) ride. Ken

Where in Texas do you dream of riding?

Ken! Texas is a B-I-G state! Not sure 10 days is enough! Lots of open scenery in west Texas - around Alpine and Fort Davis. Beautiful wooded scenery in east Texas. Then there’s the Texas Gulf Coast to experience the sand and seafood. But the crown jewel is the Texas Hill Country...lots of good riding!

We are having a TrikeTalk meet and greet in Kerrville April 19-23. Check out the KERRVILLE 2020 thread...hope this link gets you there.

I would look into doing a ceramic coating on the paint ... easy to clean and makes the paint look and feel like glass.

I rode to Breckenridge, Co. last June ... my black tri was covered in bugs. When I got home, I did a wand wash with just soap, let it set for a minute, then rinsed it off with the spot free rinse. All the bugs went away ... there were a few that were in creases that I need to did out ... but maintaining it is easy.

Our plan is meet several couples who winter in Texas at Fredericksburg. They ride most days weather allows. Our plan is to arrive there March 14th and spend at least a week riding. We were there two years ago and went to Kerrville to tour the Mooney plant. Now you have me thinking we should make a second run south. We struggled a bit with the idea of making the switch to a trike but over that and just plain pumped. Wish I knew how to post a picture - would share a photo of our rig.

This was posted in the Plane and Pilot on Nov. 12, 2019:

The Kerrville Daily Times is reporting that Mooney International has ceased manufacturing operations at its Kerrville Airport factory at Kerrville Municipal Airport (KERV), Texas. In the move, a company spokesman said, the company laid off 229 employees, bringing Mooney employment down to around 90 workers. None will be producing aircraft parts, however, which is certain to concern Mooney owners.

I visited several times. They used to have a big fly-in camp out each year that was a blast. Let me know when you arrive so I can ride up and meet you and your wife.

Fredericksburg is only 22 miles down the road! Maybe we can get a meetup together. There are some winter trikers staying at RV parks over here also. Keep us informed out here!

What is a couple thousand miles to a true triker. 🤪. Big talker here. We bought ours this winter and have never ridden it. The snow is still too deep in front of the shop.

Too bad! We will be leaving for home in Michigan on March 15 or we would be happy to show you around. However, Lola and Carla will ride with anyone. Lots of rides in the Hill Country!

Did you do this yourself or have someone do it?

If you did it, just how difficult is it to do and how

many hours did it take? Was it all done with

McKee’s 37 or something else? Looks much better

than Liquid Glass that I used when my bike was

brand spanking new. But that stuff isn’t ceramic I

    don’t think.

It is easy to use. Wipe on, wait a minute or two than buff off. The prep is to use Dawn Dish soap to wash the bike to remove old wax. Then just before you do a section, spray and wipe down a section with Alcohol and water before applying ceramic wax. The big thing is that you do small sections and make sure you buff it completely off after 1 to 2 minutes after applying. Fuzzy may jump in here but that was my prep. It looks like glass and water just beads up on it. Great Stuff!!! Remember ceramic binds with the paint and is unable to be removed.

Jan & John — are you in Kerrville for the winter? Our friends stay in Fredericksburg and have for 18 years or more. They ride with some others staying in the same park. I think 6 to 10 ride together most days that are decent. Last summer some of that group came to S.D. and we rode in the Black Hills area for a week. That is when we got the idea to get a trike. Ken

It was pretty easy .. time consuming but easy. I worked in small, like 2' by 2' areas. Step one wash the bike with dawn. Step two, wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol. Next, wipe it on with the sponge pad. Wait about a minute, wipe off the excess.

The key is to do it all in the shade or the garage. If you do it in the sun, it can dry too quickly and then it actually needs to be buffed off with a power buffer. I learned that the hard way when I did the truck. Couldn't get it into the garage. I ended up with a couple spots on the drivers door that dried before the excess was wiped off. Looked like someone put shellac on those spots. I tried rubbing with a micro fiber towel and alcohol. Didn't touch it. Ended up with polishing compound and a power buffer. Once it was knocked down, reapplied and you couldn't tell where those spots were.

The big wow was on the truck, this was a work truck, that frankly had been neglected, by me. I had left over ceramic, so I thought I'd do the truck. Here's another example.

    Mirror after:

As you can see, it really brightens and protects the plastic parts. I did the lowers on the trike and the speaker boxes on the tour pak.

Here's another couple wow pics ... after being covered in bugs ... soaped and rinsed, no wiping.

This is a before ... notice the bugs

    Name: 2019-05-16 11.10.09.jpg
Views: 144
Size: 365.1 KB

Noticed the beading ... ride down the road after the spot free rinse and there is almost no water spots. If I do get a few, I do cheat ... shhhhhhhh ... I wipe it down with the Honda cleaner/wax ... doesn't seem to bother the ceramic.

I used this on the paint

    And this on the wheels

The stuff is a tad pricey, but, the results are spectacular. They are both like $40-45 on amazon. I did the trike, a gold wing and the truck with one 4 oz bottle. Stuff goes a long way. I used Harbor Freight micro fiber towels for the alcohol wipe and the excess buffing.

I had a system to keep the pieces separate

Almost forgot ... once you open the bottle ... it starts to go bad ... crystalizes. I started on the truck about 5-6 months after I did the Gold Wing and maybe three months after the tri. there was some solid bits in the bottle. I strained what was left through some cheese cloth and still had enough to finish the truck. As you can see, the crystalizing didn't seem to affect the outcome on the truck. I'm guessing much longer than 6-8 months after opening, and it would be mostly solid. The crystals looked a little like crushed glass .. which makes sense.

I purchased a new one for the Jeep, but it got cold before I could get the jeep dent fixed and touching up the little nicks, so I still have it in the original package. Guessing early March I'll get the Jeep done, should be warm enough then. I bought this stuff in October last year, hoping it's still good .. it's unopened. The wheels I did with the left over from the trike wheels.

Oh, so you just hand buffed and not power buffed for the most part. I've never been very good at power buffing. Looks simple enough but I just never get the results I see others get. I always blamed it on our darn humidity.

Yea ... the entire trike I just buffed with the micro fiber towels by hand. It was only two spots on the truck door that I accidentally let dry too long. In all reality, I think a trike is much easier to apply the ceramic to then a car or truck (takes almost as long, but easier). The trike has lots of little areas that lend themselves to application areas. The rear fenders are the hardest to do (big surfaces). I have expel (came on the trike) on the front of my rear fenders, so I used that "line" as a natural "break" to split each fender into two parts.

As a side note, the expel seems to "be okay" with the ceramic. I took a pebble to the left fender after applying the ceramic, that the expel absorbed. The expel reports to "self heal". Even with the ceramic on it, it seems to have "healed" pretty well, even knowing were the "dent" was, I can't find it now.

I actually did the trike in two mornings, right side and rear one morning. Left side and front another. My driveway sits east to west, so my garage provided shade until almost noon. I'm guessing all told, it took me 10 hours to do the trike. Another biggie when I did the trike was doing it in early April. The temp in the mornings started in the 40's and got to the 50's by noon.

When I did the truck in June it was in the 60's in the morning and 80's by noon. I was kind of caught off guard how fast the ceramic dried on the truck. I started with the driver's door and tried to apply it to the whole door first. It was too large an area, I learned after that to use body lines to break up the larger surfaces of the truck into smaller application areas. Ideally, if you could do the application in a garage that is air conditioned, it would probably go on and dry more consistently.

It just dawned on me that another factor on the truck might have been that the ceramic had started to crystalize. Maybe after filtering it through cheese cloth, it dried even faster ... not sure.

Probably would have gone a little faster on the trike if I was not recovering from the second knee replacement (about 2 months out). I just got coffee and a chair and took my time. Do a small area or two ... take a break. Ahhhh the benefits of retirement.
