Default DK Customs Clean and Cool Oil Filter Relocation and Cooler Add.

Can't do the install today, raining and I ran out of lock tite.

As I've probably mentioned before, I don't do well with written instructions, Confucius say, "Picture worthy a thousand words". I did read them, but, have a few questions. Maybe someone that has actually installed the kit can clear up my fuzzy mind. I'm also gonna PM Kevin and get his take on my ramblings.

First, is this the way the oil filter relocation mount should look? Seems like, as my dad would say, "We're going the long way around the block to get where we need to go. I'm guessing the multiple brackets allow for more strength, easier shipping, easier install ... and probably better powder coating. But, mostly, stronger. The bends and gussets make it pretty rugged, and if I know Kevin, he's all about rugged.

It is just finger tight right now, so it's easy to change.

Next, are these the two bolts that you bolt the bracket with the "C" shaped cut out to? They are located just towards the back of the trike behind the passenger board mounts. For some reason, I read it as mounting to the passenger board mount. Probably just my mind assuming they did.

    Name: Bolts?.jpg

Assuming these are the two bolts (the bracket does line up to them) you mount the bracket as I have it set up, I think this will fit with my CVO adjustable passenger board mounts, Kuryakyn adjustable Passenger Highway pegs for CVO mounts and the Passenger ISO boards. I don't really need them since the only one that rides back there is Harley ... and his little legs can't get anywhere near them, but, There's like $200 worth of chrome there ... and I might as well use them. Besides, who knows, maybe someday someone will be crazy enough to ride with this old fat guy ... ... although ... I doubt it

So, here is me holding the bracket up to the bolts I think are the ones I use

If all my assumptions are correct, I think this will work.

Here's Kevin's stock photo for comparison

    Hey Alan,

You do have it mocked up correctly.

Below you will see a video with lots of visual of the install. Still need to follow the directions, but the video will be helpful.

You are correct about strength. The harmonics created by millions of vibrations every hour of riding would make a one piece bracket, vs. the two piece bracket, susceptible to fatigue and eventual failure.

The reason it is designed how it is (sticking so far out) is to give clearance for various passenger floorboard/peg set-ups, plus it makes it easier to access the filter when changing the oil, plus it gets it out in the wind a bit more for cooling.

The one for the 2 wheeler is the same design principle, just a bit more tucked in so that it does not scrape when leaned all the way over in a corner.

Yes, you have identified the two anchor bolts for the bracket.

Thank you for your business, I think you're really going to enjoy the benefits of this install.

    Here's the video-

    Kevin

Pretty sure it'll lift the front. When I got my first TG a couple years ago I tried my motorcycle jack as far back towards the rear as possible but no joy only the front lifted up.

I lift old Shiney with mine a supplement jack underneath the trunk. 2X4 length wise raises the rear a little. Then raise the front a little better than working on the floor it works slick.

Since it was raining, I decided to go and just look at the easiest way to get to all the things I need to do to install the clean and cool. It's not that big a deal, but, I tend to break things down into smaller installs. Mount the filter relocating brackets, mount the cooler, mount the filter adapter, and plumb it all up.

My first thought was to put the trike on the trailer and work sitting on the side of the trailer. I had visions of falling backwards off the trailer. Maybe not such a good idea. I still think if I was to make a removable section under the engine on the trike, it would make a great work stand.

Next, I thought of putting the front on a car ramp. Then, jack the rear up onto the jack stands. I'm looking at maybe a 2-4 hours start to finish. Probably take longer to get it jacked up than it would to actually install it ... LOL.

In the end, I think I'll just lay on the ground and do what I need to.

I think the hardest part is gonna be the routing of the oil lines. My plan, as suggested by the instructions, is to run them inside the frame. I've not looked under there with the thought of routing hoses, but, I suspect it's not gonna be all that tough. Just need to ensure where it comes to and from the filter relocated, doesn't get kinked during the turn forward, and basically anywhere else it makes turns.

When I used to build engines long ago in my youth, I would use elbows to ensure no kinking. Not sure I need to get that fancy, but, I might. I do have some black 1" irrigation tubing that I could run the hoses through. The benefit of that would be no rubbing of the hoses on the frame. We'll see. I need to get some lock tite and wait on the weather. Looking like Thursday is the best bet. Supposed to be in the 50's and sunny. Or anytime next week. We are to get into the mid 50's all next week and sunny. Seems like March is gonna come in like a lamb, so, probably leave like a lion. I'd like to get it done no later than next week so that I can then do the rocker lockers. If life gets in the way, the rocker lockers could be put off until after I get back.

The big goal is to have everything done before the 1st of April. I do need to do a little work on the trailer. Some of the plywood has pulled the screws through the wood as it "flexed". I'd also like to get some undercoating on the underside and another coat of satin black on the sides. Not absolutely needed, but, I would like to spruce it up since it looks like I'll be keeping it. I also want to get the ceramic done on the Jeep. Probably work on that today and tomorrow, but, might bleed into Wednesday. That way, I can do some testing on all three vehicles (Jeep, Trike and trailer) to ensure no issues before I leave for Kerrville on the 13th.

Default Houston We Have a Problem

First off, I haven't contacted DK because they are closed now. Must of just missed them ... also ... I may be doing something wrong ... LOL.

Second, I have no doubt Kevin's gang will straighten me out. They have great customer service.

Okay ... so today got to mid 40's and sunny so on the ground I went.

First I installed the filter relocation thing. The bolts were a bear to get out because someone had used red lock tite on them. I put in blue. Other than that, straight forward.

    Name: Filter Relocator.jpg
Views: 221
Size: 797.4 KB

Since I have a twin water cooled, I removed the pump cover, the two bolts on the bottom and the two bolts on the cross member. Hmmm ... the clamps went right over the frame ... something bad is gonna happen.

Next I mounted the bracket, large two holes side clamped in the bracket with the big end up, as per directions. Put the spacers in the cross member with the two bolts, put the two bottom bolts back in ... all with blue lock tite. Tightened the 4 bolts up, put the cover on and headed to the cooler.

That's when the bad stuff started. One of four things occurred.

    1) I got the wrong cooler

    2) I got the wrong bracket

    3) I'm missing some kind of adapter

    4) not holding my tongue right

As you can see in this picture, the holes on the cooler do not line up with the bracket. This picture is with a bolt in the top hole of the cooler and the bracket. The bottom holes are about an inch off.

Here's the measurement on the bracket. Roughly 3". Not a great picture. Trying to hold the tape, phone and my tongue all in the right spot was tough.

I'm glad that I decided to "bolt everything up" before I mounted the oil filter adapter. Once I get the cooler mounted it's a pretty clean install. With the clamps snugged up, I could back the trike back into the garage.

So what's left? Figure out the cooler alignment issue. Mount the filter adapter, run the hoses, add oil as necessary, check for leaks, test ride, and re torque everything. So now I wait until the morning to get intouch with Dawn (not the least pleasurable thing I have to do ... she's tops ... Alan might have an old man crush on her .. shssss .. don't tell her ... for the record, never met her, never saw a picture of her, just think she's sweeter than Southern Sweat Tea on a July day).

That looks like the same bracket and cooler that I got. The cooler mounts a 4 inches center to center, the cooler to bracket are mounted with 5/16 bolts. Without a better view of the bracket, it looks like it would be really close outside to outside on the mounting bracket.

The second picture shows the bolt that came with the cooler in the top hole of the bracket. There is no way I can get a bolt into the lower hole of the bracket and the lower hole of the cooler ... the hole on the cooler is about an inch lower than the hole in the bracket. I just don't see anyway to make it fit. I'll call DK in the morning ... I'm sure the'll straighten me out.

Only problem I had with the filter bracket , was under the swing arm cover. The rubber twisted out of its place , and spent time getting it back into place. By twisting the bolt from the right side it twists it back in place. Just took a while to figure it out. Also used the braded lines from the engine to the filter.

The decoration end covers , I could not get on. So mini ty wraps hold the braded ends on to the tubing with black tape over them . Looks crude , but works for me.
