Now that's funny right there ... when I was just a tiny little guy ... we lived on a pork ranch. The out house was quite the experience.

Well, to begin with I was like 6 or 7. The hole in the seat was this great unexplored territory (did I mention I was not wrapped real tight as a child). Just about everything I played with ended up either in the hole, or hanging from a string "exploring" the hole. My poor GI Joe spent a lot of time dangling from string near the great unknown ... LOL

As for TP, we didn't have any. The sears catalog was your friend. Sometimes we would use the old news papers and the adds. These youngsters are spoiled now. Well so am I, I suppose. Scots is so much nicer than the sears catalog, wonder if that is why sears tanked???

My "fondest memory of the out house was one day I decided to play with a fairly new piglet. The sow saw this and did like it one bit. She chased me and I wasn't quite smart enough to put the piglet down, just smart enough to run and try to find a place to hide.

Yep, you guessed it, the house with the hole in the seat. Me and the piglet were in the out house and the sow was not. Needless to say, the piglet was screaming. Mrs sow was not happy and kept banging into the out house. Not sure how the out house didn't fall over, but, eventually, the pig rancher came over and got the sow to back off and he took the piglet to the sow. Who knew sows were that protective . Needless to say, the rancher was not that happy with me either and Alan no longer was too interested in exploring the out house ... .

When I was that age Dad was an E5 or E6 and not making much money. They rented this "house" on the pig ranch. More like a share croppers "shack". I had chores that were part of the negotiated "rent". Taking out the trash, helping the pig ranchers wife in the garden, and little stuff like that. In hind site, I'm guessing it was busy work to keep me entertained while the ranchers wife watched over me (Mom had to work). It was a good time for me. I loved living there. About 40 acres in the middle of no where (some where in Maryland, can't remember) that I had the full run of. Next to it was a farm with a large watermelon patch. Good times.

Someday I'll tell you guys about my watermelon stealing crime spree ... ... LOL

I grew up between Ohio and Indiana moving back and forth where ever dad could find work,so i grew up having lived in many a house with no indoor plumbing.I was in the 7th grade before i lived in a house with plumbing,so when i tell people that i grew up kinda dirt poor most folks cant relate.Unless you have had the experience of using the out house in either 90 degree weather or zero degree you just haven't lived lol.

I grew up using an outhouse until the day I joined the Navy after graduating high school. It got pretty freaking cold in the wintertime when you would wake up in the middle of the night and have to go. Get dressed run to the outhouse and have to brush the snow off the seat before you could sit down. When you build the building using green wood and as it dried out it left big cracks to let the wind, rain and snow in.

When my wife and I moved from Washington St. to Iowa in '95 to minister a church, the folks back home wanted to know if they were treating us well. I said "Sure are. They put new carpeting in the bathroom and we liked it so much, they ran it all the way up to the house"

I do think the watermelon crime spree might be a bit much, even for these troubled times

Well, as I told you, the farmer that had the property next to the pig ranch had a huge watermelon patch. Alan loves watermelon. Put two plus two together and you end up with Alan sneaking over there to get melons.

I was only taking like one a week or so. I'd only taken like three or four. I thought no one would notice . Apparently the farmer next door figured out his melon patch was thinning.

One day, I grabbed a decent size one and high tailed it out of there. I was 7 or 8 at the time. Dad became a warrant officer when I was nine and we went to Japan when I was a month shy of 10. Anyway, there I am running with this big melon when I hear a shot. Next came a burning feeling in my right upper thigh just below my shorts and down I went. I dropped the melon, got up and ran some more.

I remember it being hot and humid. I was sweating and that made the burning worse. I really didn't want anyone to know what I'd been up to. This was the good old days when Dad had given permission to the rancher to "punish" me as need be. Anyway, I didn't tell anyone. The burning kept getting worse.

Finally the ranchers wife had me come over, sit, and help her prep some veggies she had pulled from he garden. I told her I'd rather stand, but, she insisted. Man that hurt, finally I couldn't stand it anymore and told her what happened.

She yelled for the rancher and he took a look. Turns out I was hit with a single grain of rock salt (thank God it wasn't more). He made me sit in a wash tub with warm water, of course, that ,made it burn more. Needless to say, Alan didn't desire watermelon for quite some time.
