    Default Extended Floorboards

I bought the kit to extend the floorboards and am now thinking it wasn't a good idea.

The first bolt I tried to loosen,on the right floorboard, is in so tight when it does move I am afraid it will either break or strip. I checked to see if there was a nut in back of it but it didn't seem like it was.

I have done these kits on 2 wheelers without any problems. This FW is something else.

Just looking at the left side concerns me in all that I have to remove to do the job.

Don't know what to do here either push forward and see if I can remove the bolt or forget it and return the kit. I wouldn't know what to do if I broke the bolt or I stripped it out causing more problems.

    Life is stressful enough.

*edit* tried to find any videos on this process seems there isn't any. At least none I could find. I am the world's worst mechanic it seems.

Harley like a few manufacturers use a wax type Loctite and sometimes you might need a little heat to loosen....I put the extensions on my 17 Tri-Glide and if i remember those bolts were pretty strong, What you might want to try is to tighten in a turn and back out again to loosen the bond of the loctite .....Before trying some heat...That wax type loctite makes a bond by friction [Chemical Reaction]....

Don't give up yet. I didn't have problems with the right side, just the left. I decided to put on gloves and do it while the trike was hot, that worked.

I tried to tighten, then loosen the bolt. That locktite is holding pretty good. The bolt barely moved either direction. I hate to use any type of heat because of the painted surfaces in that area.

Yes that left side does look like a mess to get into.

Can get to the handle of the socket wrench?.[Its been 2 years since i had a Tri]...Hold it with downward pressure and caveman style, Wack the handle with a heavy hammer and that might shock it off...Done that with tight bolts in the past, Till i bought a elecitc hammer gun if you have one of those that will loosen it..Its not the twisting acton, Its the hamming acton that will remove the bolt without snapping it off..

Also a shot of WD-40 and let it soak for a while might help..

I just rode around, let the engine heat up the trike.

Use a heat gun and warm metal around bolt to where its hot to the touch and then bolt should release.

Ditto on the heat gun. It will make all the difference. And you do need a heat gun - a hair dryer won't get hot enough. It won't hurt the surface - it's power coat and not paint. I heated all the bolts when I put the foot boards on my 2020 TG. And be sure to clean the blind holes the bolts screw in to to remove as much residual thread locker as possible. Mother Harley makes it way more difficult than it should be to remove these bolts but you can do it.

After much work and a little leverage I managed to get the screws out on the right side. All Happy with myself I started reassembly with the extended parts. First screw goes in without a hitch. 2nd screw( the one with the pinned extended piece) went in a little then became very hard to move. I knew in my gut I had a problem. Backing the screw out I could see mangled threads on the bolt. Looking into the threaded hole more mangled threads.

At this point I am cursing myself to no end. I don't know because I didn't look that maybe the new screw was the problem? The old screw looks good thread wise and it came out ok.

whatever happened it did so putting the new screw into the hole.

So now I ordered a tap and have to wait a couple days for it to arrive at the store. I am pretty unhappy with myself at this point. I am also worried I may have problems on the left side. If I get this done I am finished trying to make any mods to the bike. I just can't deal with this. Crossing my fingers that the tap works and I don't have to buy a new mounting plate. All because of some lousy locktite.

How do you guys do it with so much confidence?

I am sorry I didn't mention that. A friend told me to buy one, run it in and out until I had all of the old stuff off before I installed the new hardware. I didn't remember until I saw this post.

I should have been more cautious. I have done this on 2 previous trikes without any problems at all. HD must have changed how they install floorboards. Either that or I got an assembler mad at corporate and rammed the bolts in there. Either way it will get fixed if I can get the tap. Thursday and Friday look to be warm days. I was hoping to ride then.

Had a bolt issue while changing to coil over shocks. The top mount bolt was a bear , chased the threads , put in a new bolt coated with never-siez and it still was a bear. One thing for sure , it ain’t gona wiggle out!

I sure hope my bolt doesn't work its' way out. Hate to think of my feet dangling an inch off the road. Forgot I had some never seize in my toolbox. Will make sure I use it thanks foir the memory jolt.

Still working on this. I got my tap, fixed the threaded holes and got the right side installed.

Before I would use the bolts in the kit, I ordered stainless bolts for the left side. I should have them early next week and will hopefully finish up what should have been a simple job.
