...sorry I've just now seen this Alan, our continued prayers for you and your mom buddy.

I have had a similar experience with my dad, so I can relate.

He's a little on the stubborn side ...so no matter what I do to set him up, it's ultimately up to him to follow through. Best of luck with the situation, I'm sure your doing what you can

    Alan

There are some good suggestions given for helping keeping MOM safe. Sounds like several alerts maybe needed. The pennant and door alerts possibly setup on a timer with alarm for your room and texts alert messaging for when you are out of the house as an example. Just think about Mom’s life habits and yours. Just think of it as another project you’re are very creative. I know you’ll come up with a workable that will work.

God Bless! We will continue to pray for Mom and you!

Gosh, I just saw this too. Allan I wish you the best thinking this through, seems so many of us have had the same decisions to make. My mom finally decided she had to have assistance and went into assisted living by her her own decision and I was with her in making that decision, not pushing, just with her. The assisted living was in the small city where she lived, so some of the folks she knew would visit from time to time which was helpful. But you know how that goes, time passes and people have their own lives and the visits begin to dwindle.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Mom has been much better since our talk. I got her a phone case for the little phone that has a lanyard that she can wear it around the neck. She's been actually wearing that and the alert thingie.

I think it scared her a bit so hopefully ... she will get to her "New Norm"

Kinda funny but all these people are gonna know what it's like to be old soon enough. They'll soon realize they don't like being told what to do either.

They just call me azzhole. Is that the same thing???

I'm the one that really needs it but my wife has a Garmin watch that has fall detection in it and she wears it in the shower all the time. You might want to check into something like that. That watch has a bunch of things it can do. Too darn meany for my peabrain.

Hmmmm ... I wonder if I could get her one without her knowing if had fall detection. If she just thought is was a pretty watch ... she might actually wear it ...

So..please clarify how the fall detection works..

does it call someone to tell them the watch owner has fallen... or... does it just detect the motion then record the incident and someone has to access the data banks to see if the wearer has a habit of falling?

does it have to have its own phone number if it uses call technology to call for help?

I looked at the Garmin website trying to find answers to these questions and did not find the info I was looking for.

I'm not sure this would work for mom, it communicates via bluetooth to a cell ... then notifies the emergency contacts ... if mom didn't have her cell with her, it would only reach 30 feet at most to her phone ... in last weeks incident, she was way farther than 30 feet from her phone.

That's the downside of Bluetooth. Any Bluetooth device. They are very short range. One of these days they'll learn how to beat that limitation. Maybe with other devices that do what Sena types do now with their "mesh" technology. I'd love to have relay devices set out all around my house. With my wife it will work today as she is never more than arms length away from her phone. Matter of fact there are times I'd like to hide the thing from her. She can't get her nose out of her's 90% of the time.

I wish that was Mom's issue ... LOL ... I've been preaching to the choir by trying to get Mom to at least keep her phone with her at all times. She has an iPhone and it has no apps other than the ones that come with it, and she's deleted the ones that come with it that can be deleted ... LOL ... it is a smart phone that has had it's brains beat out ... ... but, if she would just carry it, at least she would be able to call if she fell and couldn't get up. Doesn't do much for her if she's unconscious, but, at least she would have a chance.

To her credit, I think the fall has "opened her eyes", at least some, now how long that lasts, who knows. We had a talk and I basically told her if she wasn't going to do what she needed to do to "keep" her independence, I would either take steps to take that away from her, I have total medical power of attorney, or, move out of my own house so that I didn't have to "see" her destroy herself.

Since that time, we have gotten her back on the little iPhone SE, small phone and lighter. She has had that with her pretty much 24/7 since she fell. I also got her a case that has a lanyard so she can wear it around her neck when she is in her "house coat" and doesn't have any pockets.

She has also been wearing her Medical Guardian device "most of the time", and that does include if she goes out, she's been good about that. She keeps telling me I don't need to wear that around here, I've got you to keep me safe. Now I simply respond by saying, "How'd that work out for you on 05/09/2020 when you fell and spent 3.5 hours on the ground in the dark?" Of course, that always ends the conversation, because she knows she's lost. But, there has been some progress. We'll see if this lasts ... only time will tell.

Well, I do feel sorry for my wife. She'll have to put up with me as I age. She's 10 years my junior so I'll be the one getting bitched at for not keeping my phone with me. I'm real bad about that. So I do know where your mom is coming from. Who wants a cowbell around their neck?

I understand her point ... but ... there is some really BAD alternatives. I'm not gonna force her to do anything ... but ... I'm not gonna sit by idly while she hurts herself .. Or maybe I will ... I just don't know what to do for her. She is a big girl and can do what she wants.

I just keep posing the question to her, do you want to keep the phone with you or would you rather be stuck on the ground outside hours on end because you're pig headed??? Good news, she starts therapy today again. She was doing well when she was doing that. The therapy is for Vertigo, which I'm not sure I mentioned. When she does therapy for that, she's much less likely to fall. Guess if she falls, cuts herself and bleeds to death, we'd have our first Chinese Virus Death in Happy Valley. The virus caused her to no be able to get therapy for the Vertigo.

Convincing someone to do something even it is for their own good isn't easy. My mother had a huge button onthe night stand next to her bed. I had a buzzer next to my bed loud enough to wake the neighbors. I'd get up in the middle of the night and there she'd be trying to do something by herself. She would not use that button. She didn't want to bother me? Just becareful what you say your words can be hurtful and belittling to her.

I’m so glad your mom is ok Alan. My parents have both fallen many times at home and out. One time my mother sat on the floor for hours because my dad couldn’t help her get up. They called my brother-in-law but had to wait until he could drive there from work.

After that, my brother-in-law set up an Alexa device for them. If they fell and could not reach the phone they could just say “Alexa, call Rick”. Alexa is not perfect and would often activate because it heard the TV wrong or something. It ended up unplugged and in a drawer. My mom carries a cell phone but it’s always in her purse and out of charge.

I hope your mom continues to wear her pendant. Prayers for you and your mom.
