Default 2013 Harley Tri Glide Rear Brakes

Hello All, I'm new to this site so please don't be mad if I make a mistake or two. I recently purchased a Tri Glide and wasn't happy with the rear brakes so I install new rotors and pads and put in new Harley Dot 4 brake fluid after I vacuumed the old brake fluid out. I bought the speedy bleeders so it doesn't take two people to bleed the brakes. I have a hard peddle now but when I apply the brakes it barely slows me down. I did notice when I first filled the rear master brake cylinder that it took 35 pumps on the brake peddle before I had to add any fluid. I'm thinking it's the master cylinder going bad so I ordered a kit for it and it was around 20 dollars. I'm hoping it's not the calipers. Anyone have any suggestions or ever had this problem.

    Respectfully,

    JFH (Johnny)

Welcome to the Gang from Western Colorado.

What pads and rotors did you use? OEM? If you used OEM, was there a dark coating on the rotors? My 15' had a dark coating on the rotors and the brakes stunk until that coating are off. Doubting it's a leak with the firm pedal, If I remember the 13's did not have linked brakes.

Yesterday on one of my testing rides, a moron on a bicycle just went through an intersection. I slammed on the brakes and was pretty surprised, I left about 10 feet of rubber on the road in three lines. You could smell the rubber burning. Never tested the brakes that hard before. I was impressed, this was at about 40 mph. Trike slide to a stop straight.

There was another stripe on the road ... single line behind the bicyclist ... Except for needing a new pair of Italian Cycle shorts ... the cyclist is fine.

welcome johnny like fuzzy said you might of not got the coating off. also the ebc pads are a lot better than factory. rear brakes were weak on the 13s as the were on previous years but the ebc pads make a huge difference. ive had them on my 13 for 50k. one pad change at 40k and that was about 30 k on the pads. replacements are still good

Have a look here, this could explain part of your problem. What brand and type of pads did you use? Not all pads are created equal. Some pads are just too darn hard IMO. This will take more time to bed them in.

Bedding in new motorcycle pads and rotors

After 35 years as the worlds number one brand, EBC Brakes has accumulated massive experience on how to guide its customers to enjoy their brake products safely.

Bedding in new motorcycle pads and rotors is an extremely important process – please follow these guidelines:

Fitting New Disc Pads To Used Brake Discs/Rotors

First of all, there are two different types of brake pad on the world markets which are sintered copper alloy or organic types. The sintered types are of course much harder and take 3-5 times longer to bed in GEOMETRICALLY to any hollow areas or ridges on a worn brake rotor. Organic pads being slightly softer bed in more quickly but also suffer from what is known as “green fade”. Green fade is explained as a heat curing of the brake material which happens over the first heavy heat cycles.

To bed in sintered pads, drive the vehicle carefully allowing extra braking distance for the first 300 miles. Please be aware that brake performance during the bed in period may be significantly less than you have been accustomed to. What you are looking for is to see a 90%+ surface area contact between the pad and the disc or rotor before optimum braking will be achieved.

Once your pads are 90% surface area bedded after the 300-400 miles, on a safe road, use the brakes 10 times in succession stopping your motorcycle from 60mph to 20mph to get the brakes deliberately hot. This is particularly important with the organic versions (aramid fibre types, carbon based pad types and semi-metallic pad types). After this process, the pads should settle down and normal riding and brake performance can be safely achieved.

Fitting New Disc Pads With New Brake Discs/Rotors

Although the brake disc/rotor surface will be perfectly flat when using a new rotor, it is still extremely important to “condition” the brake discs and match them up to your pads by driving gently for 200-300 miles. After this period, perform the heat bedding of organic pads as above in blue text.

Always remember not to contaminate your brake pads with any fluids or greases (even brake fluid) during the install process.

If you experience any vibration or serious loss of brake during this process, contact a professional motorcycle dealer for assistance.

Those calipers look very similar to older Mazda rear calipers. The pistons screw back in to seat inside the caliper, do NOT try to force them in very bad Ju Ju, the piston will cock in the bore and destroy itself. Rebuilding these piston actuators is tricky at best. If not done correctly they will leak for sure. Good Luck in your hunt for parts.

    Default 2013 Triglide rear brakes

My 2013 Triglide rear brakes just do not stop the bike either. I think I have found that a 2016 Freewheeler rear calipers and rotors which are bigger will bolt right on. The 2013 parking brake will no longer function but I am ok with that. Anyone out there know tried this or have another replacement for the terrible rear brakes on the older Triglides?

Yeah. I have the same question. Rear brakes on my '12 TG are marginal at best. I've looked at parts catalog and everything 'looks' like it would work from the newer TG's but I would sure like verification.

    Surely someone has tried this?

    Thanks.

The calipers and rotors for a 2016 Freewheeler DO bolt right on. The park brake cable is too short but will address that at a later date. BYW, I think Hayes Performance Brakes is the caliper manufacturer. I suspect that 2014 through 2018 Triglides and Freewheeler will fit.

    Default rear brake's.

Just got mine back from Harley with new brake pad's on. Yes the back brakes seem to be not so good. Have to brake new pad's in so just ride around and do some braking and they should work in. The new surface is hard and need to be used to get them broke in. Good luck.

The OP's TG is a 2013. Harley moved the TG production in-house at the York, PA facility in 2011.
