Default Bat Wing Fairing Repair Kit

I was wondering if anyone had used those brass insert repair kits to repair the 3 mounts for the windshield on a bat wing.

2 of my mounts have gone bad. My main concern is do the inserts go in okay or will they crack the fairing?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Tony.

Those are called wellnuts. They are rubber with brass threads inside. They are straight before you tighten them. Push them through the hole in the fairing, then when you tighten the screw the back end swells up like a (dog) knot (if you know what I mean). Don't tighten them TOO tight.

They aren't too expensive, buy a couple extras, just in case you drop one into the fairing like I did.

Once you tighten them, they are not easy to reuse as they don't get back to straight again.

Good luck. It shouldn't be a problem.

Tony what have you got to lose? If they work they save you having to buy a new fairing. If they don't work then you really are no worse off then you are now. Those attachment points are very hard to repair and have hold up. Good luck.

That explains why the left screw won't go in straight , no matter what I do.

    Thanks.

I'm a bit confused because all the batwing fairings I've had (8 of them now) did not have a wellnut but rather had a brass insert that was sonic welded into the fairing. I did have a Road Glide and the fairings on those definitely do use a wellnut. Now I've not inspected my new 2020 TG so I guess it could have changed but I really doubt it. Not sure how the brass repair kit you referred to works or exactly what you are needing in the way of a repair. Is the brass insert still in place but the threads are bad? If so it might be possible to use a thread chaser or even a tap to clean them up. If the insert is loose (the one on my 2012 came out) you may be able to secure it in the fairing with JB Weld which is what I did. Good luck and if you have photos that might help us understand better what the exact problem is.

Maybe they have changed. I tried to find one and the instructions I had for it, moved almost three years ago and obviously they are still packed away(the insert and instructions). I put one in my 2008 FLHTP before but the insert was solid brass threaded inside and out and slotted for a flat blade screwdriver to install it. You drilled out the old insert or the hole it fell out of. Brass so it comes out easy enough. Can't remember though if the insert was self tapping or if I tapped it prior to installing it. Probably tapped the plastic since the insert was bass. I got them at the dealer cheap enough for H-D stuff. And the parts guy gave me an instruction sheet with it. Had the drill size and depth and I guess tap size if it wasn't self tapping.

My wifes 2011 Tri-Glide has the same inner fairing, so I could use them there. Maybe they changed something on the inserts in 2014 when they changed up the fairing. I owned a 2018 Street Glide for a year had the fairing off once and remember the bolts being longer but nothing about the inserts on the inner fairing. My 2019 Tri-Glide has the Road Glide fairing, never had it off yet so glad to know they are different.

Only one's I have ever seen also. Brass & they worked very well, did not crack the fairing. Maybe the ones for the W/S are diff. ones I had to replace were the "mounting" holes for the frame

Also I didn't have the insert tool just a flat blade screwdriver. And I used them for the windshield. Luckily no others were loose. They are solid in my opinion, better than the stock ones that came in the inner fairing.
