I agree with using towels on the wheel before wrapping your tie down around it. Most wheels have sharp edges or flaws that WILL cause that nylon strap to fail. Better yet, use soft ties around the triple tree and tie down from there..... Jim

For the front I use the soft ties around the fork lowers (at the fender mounting point), and I use towels between the soft ties and the metal.

Did you mean the fork lowers or the triple tree?

I have always used soft ties from the triple tree. Then ratchet straps to the trailer corners forming an A figure. Ratchet the front fork to about 50% compression. Never a problem..... Jim

I have some straps with built in fur padding that I attach around the fender supports on the fork tubes then I ratchet forward pulling into the chock and compressing the shocks a little

    Default Update

Made some time to work on my trailer. I painted the sidewalls and started trimming with Poplar. Also built the face frame for the cabinets. I only have a few more days available before leaving for Maggie Valley.

The trailer company got shut down in March. They fired back up May 8th and I was given a delivery date a week later since it was almost done at shutdown. Sally and I headed for Phoenix to pick it up only to receive a call on the way that they built it wrong. Since I wasn't in a hurry for it there is time. They took $500 off for the trouble. They built a single axle, I ordered a tandem axle trailer.

I finally picked it up Thursday. It will live behind our 5th wheel a good bit of the time and since I would not be able to see if I had a flat I wanted an extra set of tires on it.

The first part of the project was to do the floor, mount the chock, and remount the tiedown rings.

    Attachment 88517

I chose an a peel and stick vinyl tile.

It is pretty tight between the cables so I got a couple of pool noodles (not pictured).

This seemed like my best option for tying down the front. I didn't see any place to put any tension on the ratchet straps so this seems to work.

    Attachment 88521

Next on the list is wood trim for the floor along the side. Metal edge for the rear and cabinets for the front.

    More Later.

    Default Getting Closer

I am thinking I am about halfway there. Installed the face frame and shelf. I had exactly enough floor tile left to do the back splash. Did more of the trim.

Still need to build cabinet doors, finish trim, build the counter top, repaint in a different color and sand/finish trim. I figure two full days of work left.

What size is your trailer? In the market for one and trying to determine the size. Thinking at least 7 x 12

I have a Bravo Scout enclosed with compound V nose in 7x12. It also has a dove tail and the Tri rear wheels set about a foot in front of the top of the dove tail. Trailer has a Dexter torsion single axle (3500# rating). Loaded the trailer comes in at 3450# and about 390# on the tongue. If $ were not an issue, I would have gone with aluminum frame to give me more of a gross wt cusion. I didn't realize it would be as close to the limit as it is. But I like it and it has enough room for me to get around the Tri while loaded. The 6x10 V I had before would not allow me to do that. I pull it with an F150 3.5 Eco, 10 speed tranny, 3.55 rear end with regular tow package. Hope this helps.
    It is what it is.

Its a 6x12 tandem v-nose. I wish I could have found a 7x12. It is pretty tight on width. I needed to go as short as possible because this goes behind my fifth wheel and 65 feet is the length limit in most states. I wanted tandem axles because if I have a flat and it is behind my camper I won't be able to see it. With a single axle it could be catastrophic to have a flat.

    Default trailer

I have a 7 x 12 the 6 ft was to narrow. My gross weight is about 3450 loaded i was pulling with a gmc canyon 3.6 it was to much for the truck, just over worked the motor. I bought a gmc serria 3.0 diesel now no problem. It is an enclosed trailer.

I see your pool noodles in there! I used those over the door cables on my 6x10, still have them in my 7x12 but don't really need them with the extra width.
