Engine / Oil Temps

Since I first posted this thread I have now added an aux oil cooler and completed auto tune runs on the new tune received from DynoJet. Did an 85 mile lunch run yesterday, ambient temps were some where in the upper nineties on the way home (a 30 miles run to the house). ET hit 257 oil temp maxed out at 230 which is about a 10 - 15 degree improvement after adding the aux oil cooler. These temps are still high compared to what I have seen most other people post on the forum although some have wet heads instead of straight air cooled motors so I assume that might account for some of their lower temps. This is what I have done:

- DK Customs deluxe tank lift kit

- Mighty Mite fans

- Cobra slip-on mufflers

- DK Customs Hi-flo air cleaner

- DK Customs remote oil filter kit

- De-catted head pipe

- DK Customs external breather kit

- Power Vision tuner with new DynoJet stage 1 tune and multiple auto tune runs

- DK Customs air deflectors

I am done throwing time and money at it. It is what it is. None of my previous Harleys ever ran this hot (2005 and earlier). I still have my old 1979 Shovelhead and the oil temp on it never goes over 185 deg. I am going to ride it and if it blows up I will just buy a Can Am.

Rant over.

Those are good temps. The oil is close to as good as you are going to get, and definitely in the safe range.

The ET is at the high end of where you want to be, but still good...not causing any accelerated wear.

I would not worry about the engine at all at those ambient temps and engine and oil temps.

If YOU are feeling too hot, there are things you can do to feel less heat...floorboard extension, cool vest, etc.

Kevin

btw, I was doing some heat test runs the other day...ambient temp varied between 92-95 degrees. I was riding my Tri Glide and Dwayne was riding his M8 Softail.

(we were focused on his Softail, and the Tri Glide was just a "control" bike)

My oil and ET temps were very similar to yours.

For my personal comfort I was wearing my boots, kevlar jeans, gloves, helmet, and a mesh jacket over a tee.

Before each run I poured some water on my mesh jacket and was quite comfortable because of that. Would have been uncomfortably hot if the mesh jacket had been dry.

Thanks Kevin. I do have the floorboard extenders, one of the first mods I did after buying the trike. I always wear a long sleeve shirt, jeans, boots and gloves (and helmet). Need to get a cool vest with these temps, maybe a cool suit!

Rode yesterday and the ambient temp was 98 on the way home. Oil temp was 230 and ET was 257 so the temps seem to be maxed out there.

Appreciate your comments; makes me feel better about the temps.

Sounds like you have your Twin Cam dialed in for warm weather riding! :)

Yeah, around 96 & higher seems to be the temp, where no matter how fast you go, the wind does not cool you down.

I really like the mesh jacket because you can get them wet and then they act like a swamp cooler...the evaporation is cooling. Mary prefers a cool vest.

I know when we were doing the heat testing runs the other day I was cool, did not break a sweat at the 92-95 with my mesh jacket (wet). Dwayne was just wearing a t-shirt. He was uncomfortably warm.
