Default after installing new shocks i suddenly have a low speed front end wobble.

after installing new shocks i suddenly have a low speed front end wobble.

Im not at all unfamiliar with trikes especially my own since i built it myself.

seems odd i suddenly get head shake?

Can anyone tell me if someone makes a steering stabilizer for a 1989 Tour glide ultra- champion kit?

It already has a raked tree and my neck bearings are set tighter than factory so those suggestions have been checked.

just want to know about a stabilizer for this old of bike?

    Thanks all!

    Cool

Paul, What shocks did you replace them with, same length ? Longer/shorter ?

Most headshake comes from the rear (air pressure in shocks or tires)?

Does the suspension have travel ?

I guess it wasn't showing these symptoms prior to shock replacement.

A stabilizer specific for your bike is not available but you could use a later model stabilizer and get a clamp for the highway bar or set up something similar to the TriGlide.

Ill check my pressures tomorrow, the shocks were very close in length. it they have an onboard compressor.

maybe i just haven't figured out correct pressure yet?

Ant recommendation as to the stabilizer?

I have never had to use one before in the 8 years since i built the bike.

    Cool

Paul, I had mocked one up on a non-Triglide with a standard tree using Harley Parts.

I didn't have enough room between the frame and lower tree on my mock up.

A raked triple tree should give you a bit more room.

    Ok thanks Lee.

I will look at the suggestion, I checked prices on triglide damper and they sure dont give them away do they?

I wonder if it would work on a fixed fairing?

I took your advice and regulated tire pressures and got rid of about 98% of the problem, I may just go back in and recheck neck bearing torque again. I cant remember exactly what i set them at?

check the head set bearings for wear ... some times they get a tiny dimple that will cause shimmy... with front wheel off the ground..turn the bars just a little off straight very slow and see if you feel a little difference as u start to turn.

    . did u lose a wheel weight?

if you have some fabrication skills a vw super beetle damper is around $30 last i bought one

Ok, i have mucho fabrication experience i have built one off parts for my scooters many times over the years.

got access to torch, welder etc.

I have been down sick about a week due to my heart problems but coming along better now.

i had reservations at Cheyenne crossing outside deadwood but weather has turned sour so may have to take the car?

    tell me more about Volkswagen?

the brakes on my champion kit are Volkswagen and i find these parts easier to come by than many other after market kits.

Damn im gettin old and dont move around so good?

i guess it has been since 2018 i replaced my head bearings and torqued to about 50-60 ft. pounds, where stock calls for 40 lbs.

i have a hard time thinking i have enough miles to make a difference but all is possible?

Ok, i trust you and zook to align my thinking ok?

I reduced my rear tire pressure to 24 lbs and lost allot of head shake though the shocks suck.

whats both of your experience at reducing rear tire pressure to 22 lbs? think about it before answering ok?

im about to take these 800 dollar shocks and compressor and throw them in the garbage and put my old ones back on but i can no longer do it myself.

its that bad. I need some help.

I wish i could secure a new set that actually fit my old dresser before i triked it but cant find any.

Im missing the riding season because it hurts me too bad and i am trying to get another season.

My health keeps me down more this year bros but i gotta have something to live for before next winter.

Paul, dimensionally the 1980 - 2005 FLT-FLH shocks are the same except for the length. The longer shock gives a better ride. You can find a set for a 2005 FLT-FLH for $125.00 a pair on eBay. The later years had a better spring and the longer (say 13") give a much better ride. Couple that with 20psi in the rear tires and it should ride great. When I initially set a FLH-FLT trike up, I start at 15lb in the rear air shocks also.

Paul, lower the rear air pressure to 20 lbs, don't install any longer shocks, make sure front air pressure is set to recommended pressure.
