I have seen my share of bad mounting practices, many ending in ripped beads. That will cause a huge vibration and bead leaks, not to mention it being dangerous

    Default Slight Vibration

Last week I had the AV91 mounted & balanced on my 18 Tri. I had an AV71 (predecessor of the AV91) on my 14 Tri and it was a terrific tire void of any issues. First trip out with my new AV91 I too experienced a buzzy sensation through the handlebars. Would start around 45-50 mph. The tire had 36 Psi. I emailed Avon and explained my concern. They replied the next day and said “your inflation seems low; we recommend 38-40 Psi.” “Please increase your inflation and provide feedback.” So I boosted the Psi to 40 and the buzzy feel was still there. Then I lowered the pressure to 39...no change, lowered to 38...no change. So I wrote back to Avon with my results and am now waiting to hear back from them. I’m wondering, considering the tire compound is SO HARD, maybe it’s just picking up “road buzz” from the pavement? Idk, hoping Avon will further advise this issue.

I have handlebar vibration. Now I'm wondering if it's my tire. I have a new Avon. Maybe try balancing beads next

I'm retired from a rubber/tire factory and if it is a hard compound then I would think that could be the cause of the vibration and from the road, just a guess, I just put 37 years in there and played around quite a bit, LOL, I know back in the day my dad bought some tires and I told him I could get him a discount but he went and bought another brand and they had a hard compound and he wasn't happy with the ride, he took them back and I got him some from the company I worked for and he was happy with the ride, the tires he got had a hard compound.

I know from what I just said was on car tires, but I'm sure the same applys to motorcycle tires also, rubber is rubber and they have plies/belts depends on how many.

    All for now Trampas

I had the buzzing ... had the tire rebalanced, still there, indy told me no weights needed. Had a Honda dealer balance it, the buzzing went away. Sometimes it feels like it has come back. In any event, I'm keeping the tire at 40# HOT ... turns out to be about 37# cold. When I filled them to 40# cold, they got to 43-44# when warm.

To be honest, I don't think it's the tire. It seems to do it more on the chip seal roads and not at all on the concrete ones. The naked asphalt is hit or miss.

W have all types of roads in this valley, even hard packed road base.

Edit: I did just contact Avon, I'll post their response.

Just finished installing my Avon about an hour ago. Took it out for a test ride and I must say it handled great going through town. Got on the expressway and at 50 mph it was like someone turned a vibrator on at the handlebars. So I came here to find the answer and found this thread. Waiting for the answer if there is one. By the way, I did remove a ton of wheel weights and the Avon balanced almost perfect without any weights.

    Avon's Reply:

    Hi,

    Thanks for your enquiry.

This sounds very unusual. We usually recommend 38-42 psi for trike fitment. Therefore we would recommend increasing slightly. Feel free to report back once you’ve trialled the increased pressure.

Out of interest what pressures are you running in the back tyres?

    Thanks

    Regards

I purchased your AV91 Trike Tire on 06/02/20. These were purchased from and installed by Motor Cycle Accessories in Grand Junction. At first, I had a buzzing feeling in the hand grips between 50-60 mph. I had them rebalance the tire and same result. I took the trike to another motorcycle shop and had them rebalance it. The results were better, less buzzing but still in that 50-60 mph range. It almost seems to come and go depending on the road surface. Worse on chip sealed roads, best on concrete surfaces. Asphalt roads seem to be hit of miss. I'm running 40 psi in the tire. What do you recommend I do next?

    Thanks,

    Alan

I also responded to his query about the rear tire pressure saying I'm running Goodyear Comfort Treads with 30# in the rear.

We''ll see what they come back with.

We have 23 in rear Comfortred for 2 up & fully loaded. 41 in front Avon. No buzzing but dealer did put weight on Avon when he installed it after removing the RideOn from previous trike ,when I DID have a buzz.

Okay, so as per Avon, I've been playing with tire pressures, front and rear) ... you know me ... if something can be adjusted ... I'm all over it.

I have the AV-91 on the front and Goodyear Comfort Treads on the rear (all installed on 06/02/20). All pressures are hot, mainly because I'm adjusting them on the fly.

Started with 40# front and 30# rear.

I'm currently at 36# in the front and 26# in the rear. Ride is excellent (by that I mean the best I've had since doing the proaction 14" shocks and the new tires). The "hum" is still there between 50-60 mph, but, it's almost not noticeable. When the "hum" was at it's worst, I almost felt like it was somehow "robbing" power. None of that at the current settings. Might try 35# front and 24# rear, but, these settings are very doable.

And for the record, with the lower settings, the type of road surface doesn't seem to be affecting the "Hum", so that may have not had anything to do with anything?

When the Avon was installed,I had bearing replaced as part of change. So was not the bearing,in my case. Mine stopped after the RideOn was removed. They balanced the tire with weights. That said, with 1st Avon & DynaBeads, no problems & had 27,000 on that tire. Only changed as we were going on a long trip.

The ride-on was installed with the new tire,& is when I had slight vibration. Had all tires switched to the new 20 as they were very new,& did not want the Dunlops.Had dealer remove the RideOn & balance front. Dyna Beads are still in the rears

Well I put about 3000 miles on the AV91: Sturgis and back! No amount of tire pressure or road type makes a difference in the Buzzing from 45mph to 60mph! Very disappointing! It is a great handling tire; but I would never buy another one; on Concrete you get noise too! If this one gets high mileage it will be annoying for quite some time! Back to Dunlops for sure!

I was sad to hear that after 3000 mile there was no change. I've tried different pressures and added Dyna beads at 1 0z, 2 0z and 3 0z at different pressures and nothing changed. Got 1500 miles on the tire and can no longer handle the tingling in the bars, it can't be good for all the electronics hiding behind the fairing.

I really like the way the Avon tire handles, but I have a Dunlop American Elite showing up tomorrow. I've been using these on my 2 wheeled ultra for years with great success.

I now have over 7500 miles on my 2020 & no problems with the Avon.

Just throwing this out there as I have seen this happen :: Was the tire mounted proper rotation ?? Just a thought

I had the Avon trike specific tire on my 2018 and it had about 12k on it when I traded for my 2020. Never had any problem - no buzz, no hum, nada. Bummed to have this problem and hope you get it sorted.

Everyone keep in mind they made the AV71 for a long time, then last year came out with the AV91 Chrome. Then you have the trike specific tire in sizes for the TG & GW.

I have had a AV91 Chrome sitting in my bedroom for 10 months with a delay in mounting due to illness, so I hope mine is OK...My point being we are talking essentially about 3 different tires.
