    Default Reverse Motor TSB

Dropped off Trike today. No reverse, was able to “repair “ it temporarily by tapping with a hammer and punch. That got me reverse for a few more times. Service writer printed a TSB to give the tech. Revised reverse motor part number as of February? Also contained test/trouble shooting instructions. Still have 1 more year on esp so should only be out the deductible.

The latest info I know of is HD is now having their techs rebuild the motors in house, replacing only the parts they see as bad. HD took a blood bath on replacing the motors under warranty

The trouble shooting diagnostics is fairly new for the techs. This goes along with HD replacing too many reverse motors under warranty. The TSB wants the techs to do a full check on the motor including voltage drop tests to make sure that the motor did fail

You can read the TSB here https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...47407-9999.pdf

Service did say esp has been mandating rebuilding but he was going to try to get new part number approved.

    Wait and see.

I think the TSB for the new reverse motor part number is in addition to this TSB. I cannot find a copy online but think it is number 1508 , linked one is 1458.

Only thing I can say is don't hit new style starter type motors with a hammer. Many have ceramic magnets that can break when you tap on them.

I must be one of the lucky ones (just Jinxed myself) I put 46,000 miles on my 16, always used the reverse & NO problems. I keep seeing all the posts on peeps having trouble. What is the common denominator here ? Only had breaker pop one time. I had the E brake on.

Now I only have 7300 on my 20,so I guess time will tell.

Tap on brush holder/commutator end not motor body where field magnets are located. Brush holders known to corroded and brush springs cannot keep brushes in contact.

Old joke about a repairman who fixed a furnace by tapping on it with a hammer. When customer received bill for $100.00 he was outraged and demanded an itemized list of charges.

    Repairman submitted the following,

    Tapping with hammer $1.00

    Knowing where to tap $99.00

    🤣

The tapping creates a spark between the worn brushes and the commutator, this works like a band aide on a broken leg

TSB 1508 gives techs the number 83388-C as the new part number for the reverse motor

Exactly........The weak link on those motors [They are not starter motors] Are when water gets in and starts to corrode the carbon brushes....Had mine out a few times to clean.....

Tap when no power is being applied. No sparks then. Yes it’s a bandaid but verifies/points you in the right direction for repairs. I wasn’t stuck anywhere but if you absolutely needed reverse this technique could give you the one shot you need.

Same here, Wife/I both have 2010 HD trikes and still have the orig. reverse motors - we rarely use them but i can count the number of times we have tripped the breaker......NOW as stated above HOPE I havenent jinxed us!

Water is the enemy on these motors.

Is the new part number a better design

to seal against water infiltration? I’ve been caught in some terrible weather.

Ridden hours in the rain. Don’t know if others who have commented they have no issues have also been as wet or not.

Message from dealer says motor on order , expect delivery today. Will see if paperwork indicates replacement with new part number or not.

They added a drain hole to let the water out......But did not or could not seal it to keep the water out in the first place......

Starters and electric motors have been vented for years, 1 to vent internal heat, and 2 to keep water out. The # 2 has not worked good in a lot of applications mostly depending on placement of the vent

OK, the reverse on my 2015 Freewheeler has gone out. I have always used it very sparingly. Over the years it has tripped the breaker a couple of times but I have checked the breaker and all of the wires for loose connections. Is there a rebuild kit or does the whole motor have to be replaced?
