Boom! Box GTS Software update for Android phone

OMG - Just got my 2020 Tri Glide Ultra, discovered no Android Auto after all that money spent. Searched and found the software update. Was scared to even try to change anything in fear of doing something wrong and messing the entire system up. Took a deep breath and when at it just like on a maintenance test flight - either it will or won't work. Low and behold I downloaded the update from the Harley web site, unzipped it, copied the unzipped DOM file to an empty thumb drive went out and turned on the bike to Acc mode, plugged the thumb drive in and waited. It found no music data, I clicked OK, then it found the update and asked if I wanted to install it. I took another deep breath ready to pull a couple G's and pressed "Yes." It gave a few commands like Don't turn off, wait till install is complete then all went blank/black. I waited, and waited, and waited, then when I was about to say I guess I did something wrong the screen lit up and stated - Installing 1 of 6 updates. The 1st 5 updates all went great. when the 6th got there it did nothing, again for quite a while. I noted it was trying to update the Sirius XM system (which I don't have - yet...) then all of a sudden it stated, "Rebooting." Again it took a few minutes and the radio came back on. I plugged in my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and WOW, the Icon on the screen changed and came up as the Android auto Icon and the phone requested permissions. After the permissions were OK'd the screen changed immediately to Google maps showing my location and giving me full function of my Android phone.

So if there are any other new trikers out there with the need to update the Boom! Box GTS - do it (Follow the directions though). It'll be worth it.

Id like to know. If I do install the update, plug my phone in and go with carplay. Do I always have to use it? If I turn the bike on without attaching my phone, will the old system default on? Reason I ask is because I have a samsung note 9 and it does not fit inside the phone box they have build in the fairing. ( I have a 2020 TriGlide), so I need to either buy a phone holder, or put it in my pocket with a long chord.

Don't know about Android stuff,but, with my IPhone,I just put it on Bluetooth & play music .Still lets me know when a call comes. Also I carry in my pocket or put in the tour pack. No need for a cord.

With Android Auto you have to plug it in, the same as in a car. I ran a USB cable from the usb connector in the front to the tour pack and keep my phone there, like to keep it out of the weather. Another quirky thing is you have to you have to wait to plug the phone in until after the trike is started.

Wasn't sure about Android until the above post but I suspected that like Apple CarPlay the phone had to be physically plugged in to the USB port in order for the app to work.

I have my iPhone mounted on the right side of the handlebar using a Tech Mount and have a USB cable run to the connection in the box on the dash. And it was very, very finicky until I had the dealer do the flash to NOT require a headset / mic for CarPlay. I assume but don't know that the Android version of this may also have that requirement which could then be disabled. By not requiring a headset / mic I found that CapPlay loads most everytime whereas before I had to plug, unplug and plug the phone again in order to get it to start. Harley ever happens now. Only downside is that I can't talk to Siri but I never liked the little b**** anyway so no big loss there.
