    Default Rear Bearing Replacement

    Planning to install DK Customs rear bearing retainer plate kit. I do not have a Harley shop manual to take to the heavy truck place I am going to have press off and press on the bearings.

    Would anyone be able to post the shop manual pages or tell me what is needed to be done?

    Tony, Kevin has posted the info from the HD shop manual. There is no reason to be concerned that the shop you will be using does not have the HD press parts numbers. Any shop that has pressed Ford or Chrysler axle bearings will know how to do this job, they press on and off the same.

    Thank you both Kevin and Jack.

    I was out shopping for rear bearings this morning and discovered my local NAPA can't use the Harley bearing number to locate a better bearing. Their advice was to bring in an old bearing and they could either get a number off it or measure the size.

    As I don't want to pull the axles until I have all the parts, I thought I'll go buy one Harley bearing at the dealer.

    Dealer tells me there are no bearing part #83314-09 anywhere in Canada. Part is back ordered with no expected delivery date.

    So unless someone knows an SKF or Timken number , I'll have to put the project on hold for a while.

    A bit of play is the poor bearing plate design, HD will call it normal. In the long run it is not good for the bearing or the end splines on the axle. Kevin from D K Customs has designed a much improved bearing plate you can read about here http://www.dkcustomproducts.com/trik...ner-plates.htm

    When you change to this new plate you will be changing the bearing also. Never reuse a bearing that has been pressed on and off again, the side loading caused during pressing will fracture the bearing. You may not see it but it will come back to haunt you

    This is good info. The price of new bearings shouldn't be in the equation.

    The bearings I've used are National Bearings brand (Federal-Mogul), part # 208-FF

    Specs are:





    This seems to be a pretty popular bearing. Jack listed the SKF and Timken. The National Bearing is carried by some of our local auto parts stores, and I'm sure they can also get the SKF and Timken if they don't already have them in stock.

    Just wanted to let everyone know I finally got around to getting the bearing retainer kit installed. Thank God I did because at just 5500 miles my stock retainer plates were already starting to show the " witness marks" that are on DK Customs web page. No where near as bad as Kevin's trike , but they were definitely there. It's not like we have a lot of corners here on the Prairies. Probably due to our lousy Manitoba roads. Anyway I highly recommend this upgrade to everyone.

    For those who are interested the SKF bearing part numbers are 6208-2RSJ for the rear bearings and SKF part number 62052RSJ for the front wheel bearings.

    Is the original bearing a sealed or open bearing? I have looked at the part numbers some have posted and seen both type.
