I have a curved spine with deteriorating discs along with arthritis. The only thing that temporarily works is inversion or the rack stretch. Chryopractors just try to straighten out my 72 year old spine. They create more aking than what’s already there.

It was fine for a while , till the trike entered my world , as I’m a rolling chiacane on the road.

Yep, I try to invert too. It does help but very short lived. My problems with inversion is the pressure it puts on my artificial ankle. I can only take for very short amounts of time. But when I'm really really hurting I give it another try. Did it all the time before I shatter my ankle. Inversion has probably given me 10 extra years.

And why is it invert and not invers ???

Back, when I was just a pup, my Mom took me to a chiropractor to help with, of all things, my asthma and breathing problems. She was going broke sending me to breathing treatments and buying medicine that didn't help. Don't know how but old Doc Faigan gave me great relief of my asthma.

A couple of years back I went to a local chiropractor for back problems. I tell ya, things had changed in a not so good way. This guy used a device that looked like a air chipper with a fork on the end. That sumbitch was a lethal weapon. After a session with him, I was in a lot of pain. I found out pretty quickly that this new age stuff ain't for me.

I have lots of sympathy with anyone going thru back issues. Any kind of relief can be a long road.

I need more info on this. Didn't the vest dig into your armpits? What was the vest made of? Where did the chains attach to the vest, front, back or both in a Y configuration? Step off blocks which direction and how did you get back on them? Probably more questions as I think about it but this does sound like something I might be able to do. Wonder if they sell the vest and how much? I have the wedges chiropractors use. Or at least they used them on me to try to change my hips which in turn tried to straighten my back. I still use then from time to time.

vest was made like a life vest, instead of buttons it fastened with velcro .chains went thru top of vest at shoulders.chains hook to two bars that stuck out of top of 4/8 ply wood about foot above my head.block of woods were far enough apart to step inbetween. this had a slight angle so your body layed against board.may have been a stronger board.raised leg back to get on blocks . vest covered half of chest. he gave fishing magazines to look at while on board . this was a long time ago, doctors name was barthalumu. have looked for this set up ,unable to find it.may try to build one now that im retired. hope this helps.

Between both your information and the one above, I think I can build something that will work just fine. Thanks for the info, both of you!!!

On these harness things I don't think a bar across a doorway would be strong enough to support one’s entire weight ... maybe rig a harness to an engine hoist?

I wouldn't trust just anything. Just dropping onto your feet from 6 inches will take the smile off your face. Taking the pressure off my back was never good for me. Just hurt to damn bad when I put the pressure back on. To each his own. But I'm careful just stepping off a curb. Yep I'm old. I will say being 40 lbs lighter was a big help.

I was thinking the same thing; must be more to it than that. Would not be good to crash to the floor.....really good for the back!

Yeah, I won't be trusting the molding around my doors that have just little finish nails holding it on. My shop is metal so those doors will work just fine.

    Default Second "Adjustment"

Had my second "adjustment" today. I spaced them out pretty well ... about a month apart ... knew I'd be making the trip to Texas for bbq and trailer, so, wanted a lot of time in case it got worse.

I have to admit ... I haven't had the Sciatica pain since the first adjustment. Just a tad soreness where the bad vertebrae are.

Anyway, he was very pleased. I only had one vertebrae "Out" whatever that means. He just did about 10 minutes of this big thing that feels like those Shiatsu massage gizmos on steroids. I gotta admit, I like that ... reminds me of the Japanese gals walking on your back when I lived in Japan. If he did that a couple more minutes, I'd fall asleep ... LOL.

After that, he felt around and declared that the one vertebrae was not back "in". Next appointment ... two weeks from Monday. He moved me to Mondays because of I bowl on Friday afternoon and he wants me to have some time to heal before the bowling.

Anyway, seems this back crusher is doing just conservative treatments and they seem to be working. He did tell me without the 2400 mile trip, I might not have needed anything ... time will tell. He also said years of walking like a "drunk hooker" (doctors words not mine), because of the bad knees, is probably why the vertebrae were "Out" in the first place ... kind of makes sense.

I wish it would work for me but I have an extreme case of scoliosis. I have a double "S" curve and in two directions. So I curve side to side and front to back. If I was straight I'd probably be around 6 ½ feet tall but I'm now down to 5' 10" from 5' 11" just a few years ago. And still collapsing. No doctor will touch me. Although chiropractors would, but as soon as they are done and I stand up, everything goes right back where it was so it's of zero value. Once something changes in my back where the pain literal puts me on the ground, then and only then will my neurosurgeon attempt to fix me. But I may not walk again or have such limited mobility I may as well not have any. That's my predicament. When I had my motorcycle crash back in 012 I prayed my back was broke. No such luck. Busted vertebrae, collar bone and ribs but the darn back didn't get broken. I was so hoping to finally, potentially, not be in constant back pain. Oh well. Still waiting.

When you see the problem and it's explained to you. That would be by a doctor that knows what he's doing. You then realize no amount of bending and twisting is gonna change things for the better.

I guess the spacing in the lower back is shot except for L3 which is normal. L5 has what they call a vacuum, all I know about that is that means it's not had proper spacing for a long time. I'm guessing like 50 years when my dad accidentally dropped and AC on me ... LOL.

I've been given some stuff to think about. !) therapy that might loosen it up, 2) injections, no idea what kind, 3) surgery. Pretty sure I'm not gonna choose surgery, been there, done that a couple dozen times ... it's getting old. I know nothing about injections. And, I've done therapy more than I care for.

So, any advice would be appreciated. I told the doc I need to think about it for a couple weeks. I have my next appointment 9/18, so that's my dead line.

To be honest, I've never really felt like the pain was bad enough to do anything about. It's only reared it's ugly head when I've abused my body, like working on the trike, fixing stuff around the house, etc. Then it is sore for a couple days.

The only good news to come from the appointment ... the Doc never said, "It's age appropriate" ... LOL ...
Just came home yesterday from back surgery. A year ago I herniated a disc in the L3 - L4 of my lower back. Had 2 lumber injections couple weeks apart. After a couple weeks the pain went away. Fast forward to the fall 2020, it herniated again, this time further into my nerve. Unbelievable pain. Two more lumber shots about 2 weeks apart. Second shot helped me enough I could get out of bed I was in for 2 weeks.

Went to see a surgeon at AGH in Pittsburgh. He had an opening for the 28th of this month and I had the surgery. Dr removed damaged portion of disc and cleaned up a lot of scar tissue. Immediately the numbness and pain nearly all gone. Incision is very uncomfortable but my legs and hip from the nerves on my left side are fine. I have noticed the pain is better today, Dr. said I should be able to go to work on light desk duty. Full no restrictions in 12 weeks. It is a good piece of mind because I know every time a swing my leg over getting on trike I won’ t reherniate it again.I highly recommend this surgeon. He personally called me to see how I was doing and gave me his personal cell phone if I ever have questions. Best of luck to you.

Do you trust the VA? I would give them a shot. If I knew what I know now about my back injuries ( this goes back to 1992 on the job) I would have asked to be re trained and not subject my body to the harshness of heavy mechanics work

My disability Dr @ The Mayo clinic asked me how I would feel if i could not ride a motorcycle any more. I said ya might as well kill me now. When he was done laughing he said think of it this way, it is like putting marbles in a bucket and shaking them up. I did not listen but he did support my disability retirement and in my paper work he allowed for me riding a motorcycle. The S S board did not bat an eye. I guess I got lucky, tho I would have preferred to stay working.
10-4 on the chiropractor not helping. My first disc herniated and I went to chiropractor, he became worse after my third visit I went to Dr who stabilized me and all was good until year later happened again, same disc more severe.

That is very good news for you

I should have followed up on my original injury, but like a fool I kept working and the damage kept getting worse

I had discussed with my Drs @ The Mayo Clinic if I would be a candidate for artificial disc replacement, they said yes but alas that service is NOT approved in America yet
