Thread: Horn mount isolator bolt

    Default Horn mount isolator bolt

    I received my Love Jugs Mighty Mite fans from Papa Zook and "was" in the process of installing them. I removed my horn cover w/horn from the Trike and now am in the process of trying to unscrew/remove the horn's rubber isolator's glued to spacer to install the new rubber isolator provided in the Mighty Mites kit. As seen in various installation videos, I expected getting a "couple of turns" on the factory installed rubber isolator was going to be tough because there is simply not much metal to grab a hold of with a pair of large pliers and turn. "Well, so much for that" after tearing the rubber away from its glued to metal spacer bolted to the front side of the horn mount bracket with a second bolt from the back side of the horn mount. I thought there was only one bolt extending from the back side all the way through the rubber isolator to the front of the horn mount. "NO", there are two bolts. Next, thinking I could unscrew the round nut from the second bolt on the back side of the horn bracket, I removed the horn bracket's two bolts, installed in the engine's fins, to get the bracket in a better hold position to remove the round nut with pliers. Why in the "h_ _ _ _" would the Harley engineers use a soft metal round nut, with no standard wrench placements is beyond me. At this point, I can not get the nut to "break loose" because the nut's soft metal can't withstand the large pliers bite when trying to turn the round nut resulting in the pliers slipping. In turn, does anybody have any possible suggestions or solutions for getting the horn bracket's front metal spacer where the rubber isolator was glued to or the rear round nut removed/unscrewed? Your ideas would be appreciated.

    If I understand you correctly, #11 the rubber spacer has fallen apart and you cannot get the threaded stud to come out of the bracket? If that is the case try some heat on the back of the bracket, the threads are cut into the bracket and loctited @ the factory. They can be a real bummer some times. See the exploded view here

    I too ripped the rubber off trying to unscrew it. I took the bracket off the bike and put it in a vise. Wedged a screwdriver between the rubber metal backing and the bracket. I bent both sides, so I could get a hold of it with vice grips. Applied heat to it and unscrewed easily. As was said, its a pain in the a..! Hope this helps.

    Thank you for all your responses. Since I had already removed the horn bracket from the cylinder head fins, I got my 4.5" grinder and very "carefully" cut/ground down smooth the round nut and bolt on the back side of the horn bracket. Next, I used a pair of large pliers and was able to loosen/unscrew the spacer that the rubber isolator was glued to. After seeing all the "red loctite" in screw threads hole, no wonder I could not initially turn the spacer. Finally, to cover up the few backside "nicks" I made during the grinding process, I used a "gun black" marker applying several coats of black paint. In turn, "good as new". Once again, thank you for all your responses and suggestions.

    Good deal. Clean the threads with a bottom tap. I used anti seize on the threads on mine so no more surprises

    Default Got Mighty Mites Installed

    Well, I got the LJ Mighty Mites installed today on my 2014 Tri-Glide. I can't believe how many times I had loosen/tighten the acorn nut to get the fans positioned to my liking. Seems when I held the fans in the position I wanted and tightened the acorn nut, the rubber isolator mount would have one fan to high and the other to low when I released the fans. Finally, after loosening and tightening the nut about ten times, I starting holding the fans high one side and lower on the other guessing where their final resting position would be when fully tightening the nut. After about the sixteenth time, I finally got them positioned to my liking. Now I am having to wait on the accessory harness, I ordered, which will give me the ability to power the fans using the "ACC" Off/On button switch I installed. Anyway, I am looking forward to using these fans during our trip to Eureka Springs, Ark. in a couple of weeks.
