Default Way Off Topic (trikes) Question

I took my Jeep in to my favorite service place for oil change, tire rotation, etc. ... yep a friend that I trust. He told me the procedure Jeep has to reset the engine oil life meter doesn't work on my Jeep. And he had to use his code reader to reset it.

    So, here's my question:

Anyone have a favorite code reader that has the capability to reset the oil life meter?

I was reading the owners manual, and apparently if that thing gets to like 20 or 25%, it puts the Jeep in creep mode ... not creep like hanging around playgrounds ... creep like it will only get to 25 mph. This could be a bad thing if I'm somewhere "remote".

So, I thought I'd get me a code reader ... ... no idea what kind ... so wondering if anyone has a favorite?

Alan, try one of these methods yourself before you give up and buy a coder reader...

Method 1: Resetting Oil Change Indicator Without starting the engine, turn the ignition in the ON/RUN mode*position. In the instrument cluster display, navigate to “Vehicle Info” then “Oil Life.” Push and hold the ‘OK’ button until the oil life*gauge resets to 100%.

Method 2: Resetting Oil Change Indicator Without starting the engine, turn the ignition in the ON/RUN mode position. Fully press the accelerator pedal three times within ten seconds. Place the ignition in the OFF/LOCK position.

If the indicator message is still lit after following either method, the oil change indicator system did not reset. If*this happens, carefully repeat the procedure. It’s important to note that the engine oil change indicator system is duty cycle based. That means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate based on your personal driving habits.

I use method 2 on my Ram 1500 truck all the time.

I also use # 2 on my Ram 1500.....I would think if you needed a reader just for a routine oil change the Chrysler Corp would have to supply one to each owner free of charge.....IE...Magnuson- Moss Act.....

I have tried both of those methods many times. The mechanic at my buddies shop tried both of those many times, and the Chrysler dealer has tried both of them many times. The only thing that works is the code reader. I mean it really isn't a big deal, it only has to be reset once a year ... and the guy that does the oil change knows how to do it with the code reader.

The dealer thinks since it's a diesel, in a Grand Cherokee, it has to come on as a warning for either method to work. I did 7k miles on the Jeep since the oil change a year ago and was still in the 45% of oil life range. I just thought as a precaution, I'd get a reader. The ones I've seen range from $35 to $100 that say they reset oil life. I think it would be a good insurance policy. Plus, I could check for codes before going to any place to get things repaired.

If you're still having trouble with your 'oil life mileage' indicator not resetting, how about writing the manufacturer? You may not be the only one with this problem and they may have found out what's causing it by now. Either way, you've put them on notice that there's a severe issue with this indicator.

As far as going into 'limp in mode' if the oil life expectancy gets too low, that kinda sounds like an urban myth.

I sent customer service at Chrysler an email about the issue. I have no clue who actually makes the army of computers in the\is Jeep. I've said it before and I'll say it again, "I'm afraid to pass gas in this rig, it'll probably try to wipe my b$tt!"

I hope you are right about that, if we ever get over this Chinese Virus junk, I plan on doing some traveling in the Jeep with it dragging the Tri on the TK1 ...

Mine is a bit odd ... or at least a little rare ... it has a 3.0L diesel ... even the dealer was surprised to see one. The dealer supposedly researched it and still couldn't get the oil life thing to reset without the computer.

Alan, do you have the diesel supplement manual in your possession ?

There is info on the DEF system posing problems that can include drive ability issues. These need attention from a dealer scanner

I do ... The Jeep goes in to Chrysler for the latest "recall" technical, not safety. It does something to the exhaust filter ... It's free and they have the parts to do it.

Might check with the dealer again about the oil life thing. Still haven't heard from Chrysler about this issue.

MB sprinter oil change is 15000. I do the transfusion at 7000. That gives me two changes till resetting.

Fuzzy, I've always had the impression a hand written (or typed) letter was more effective than an e-mail, especially if you send it registered mail where somebody has to sign for it. Knowing who to send the letter to is the first step and will likely require some investigation. The service department at your local dealership should be able to give you some direction on this. This type of question might even cause them to take your case even more seriously if they think they may be mentioned as a dealership that can't solve a problem with a customer's car in a letter to 'the Big Boys'.

Due to the pressures involved in diesel engines I could sure be wrong about the engine oil life expectancy causing the engine to slip into limp-in mode. Ya never know with these computer controlled engines. Good luck with this "oil-reset" issue.

If I don't hear from them (Chrysler) by the end of the week, or get some input from the dealer when they do the Tech recall Friday, I may just do that. I've actually done that in the past with Chrysler on a different issue and had very positive results.

Thanks for reminding me about the snail mail route, especially certified, and it's effectiveness. I guess we all tend to "default" to the "instant gratification" option. I'll start composing my letter now ... with me, the first couple of drafts tend to come off as rants ... and you do catch more flies with honey than vinegar

Jeep electronics seem to be an whole nother animal. On my '17 Wrangler I installed LED headlights. Simple enough. After install the fog lights stayed on real dim when I shut off the Jeep. To keep the LED's I put the fog lights on a separate switch. My friend at a truck accessory shop says Jeeps are finiky.

    Default Response from Chrysler

From FCA, not sure what that is, but seems to be the recall section:

"Answering your questions Alan, we would have two options to attempt to reset the oil life, first option would be by pressing the left button until you are at the main screen in the instrument cluster, then pressing up and down until you can see vehicle information, in vehicle information pressing the right button until we see Oil Life, then holding the right button to reset.

If that doesn’t work the other option would be for the indicator light, for this you will need to be to the vehicle into the accessory position, then press the brake pedal all the way down within ten seconds and turn the vehicle off.

Once your vehicle is restarted the indicator light should be removed.

Otherwise the oil life indicator system would be mainly a monitoring system it wouldn’t have an effect on the running of the vehicle, with oil change invoices it won’t have an effect on remaining warranty."

So there are two methods not in the owners manual. I don't want to reset it now, but will try these when I do.

It also seems that the oil life meter is not gonna affect the "cripple mode", but only the indicator light, which I have not seen, can affect that.
