    Default Trunk door

On my 2020 TG the trunk door will come open when I'm riding unless I lock it with the key. Is this normal?

Not normal But that trunk door is problematic and People have been having trouble with that for years on my 2011 and 2017 and 2019 now I have a small bungee cord that I loop on the two retaining cables they keep pressure on the door and I have no problem with it popping open and I never lock it ‘Before i did that my door would pop open intermittently...

Yep, it happens to a lot of trikes. Different adjustments, rough roads, and not closing the door properly .. Locking should help.

Should not happen imo. Never had it happen on my 2018 or on my now 2020. I personally know several others who have had this problem. Suspect a bit of adjustment will remedy the problem. The male piece on the door can be adjusted to go further into the hole on the trunk body where it is captured. Also close the door without shamming it as this can upset the mechanism.

I can't post pictures.......But just open the door and grab the retaining cables one in each hand and then put your hands together while holding the cables and you'll get the idea....

Don't slam the door. Lots of plastic in the lock housing that can suffer from repeated slamming. Check adjustment. Biggest thing I've noticed is you can close door and hear it click but if you push in again and compress the weather stripping you can feel and hear latch totally engage. I got tired of leaving fingerprints on the clean door so I bought a stick on caliper insert medallion and placed it appropriately and use it to push on to seat the latch fully.

We have never had any issues i keep up with lubrication on the latch closes easily. I believe there have been changes made to the mechanism in newer models. Good luck with the remedy. Fred

If harley would put some metal pieces in the lock it would help, plastic isn't good and most of it is plastic, a cheap way for harley, as one poster said don't slam the door, yea it closes but also over time will damage the plastic lock insides, push door in easy and then lock it, I have mine locked all the time for this reason and never have had any problems.

Now you can buy a padlock hasp and put that on and never have any more problems, just unlock the padlock and open door, I seen a pic one time that a person did that, not my cup of tea but I guess he had trouble keeping it closed.

    All for now Trampas

Happened to my wife on her 2011 Tri when it was new a few times. As Fred said, lubricate it once in a while. The button gets kind of sluggish or sticky feeling and it does not latch good. A shot of WD40 or similar works very well. Happened to me on my 2019 Tri last weekend, got the tool roll out and sprayed mine and hers. Also we pull the retaining cables to the center of the trunk before closing, other wise they get pinched a lot. I like Rhinos idea with the bungee cord.

We always lock ours and they have still popped open locked. Less than a handful but still not something I want to worry about and the lube works.

take the screw out from one end or the other on the cable & give it a twist, & that will solve your pinching problem, or at least it did for me.

2018 and it has popped open once. Probably when I rode over some RR tracks. Always keep it locked. Never slam it. An aftermarket better mechanism would be nice.

I've had 3 TG's (2012 and 2 2014)and never had a problem with the trunk door. The only people that have that problem are those that have and continue to SLAM the door close. Everyone that closes the door slowly do not have that problem ...... to my knowledge. We have 5 TG owners in our HOG chapter and none have the problem.

I have ridden over a lot of horrendous bumps in my 9 years of riding my TG's and have never had the door open - and I do not lock it or lube it. The only time I have a problem with the door is in the winter and the push button takes forever to retract back out. Lube only makes it worse in the cold - plastic does not need to be lubed. IMHO

I close my door the same way I use to have to close my VW Bug's door = slowly close it and then give it a quick push until I hear the click. Anyone that has owned a VW Bug knows what I'm talking about.

Mine has popped open a couple times, even though it was locked. I think railroad tracks got me. To retain the door closed, I used a small bungee cord. I looped one end around one of the bolts that attach the tour pack in the top of the trunk compartment. I wasn't very imaginative on how to attach it to the door, but used the hook end of another bungee to make an attachment point. I tied a knot in one end of the bungee until I had the tension about right. It now holds the door shut even if the latch pops open. Really easy to attach and detach. Not elegant, but it works. Pardon the dust - I live on a gravel road.

    Default Good Ever Since

Had my 2020 TG for 1 month. Got pulled over by the police in a residential neighborhood. He notified me my rear trunk door was opened. Sure enough. I had notice that the push button was really slow to retract for about 2 weeks. Got home lube the latch and button and it became fast as lightning. Never opened again on its on. I have 8200 mile on the bike over all kinds of terrian.

So does that mean lube is not on the dealerships check list or the lube they use only lasts 2 month? Glad it was a simple fix and hope the cop wasn't a Barney Fife that just had to write a warning ticket.

This is a common issue with the Tri's ... I always leave mine locked. Day one with my 15, I was riding it home and someone stopped me at a light and told me the trunk was open. The dealer "adjusted" the lock and it would still pop open sometimes when I hit bumps.

I did add lubing it with HD lube every 2k and that has helped with the closing and opening. The lube allows the latch to cycle more freely.

On my 16 all it needed was a simple adjustment of the plunger that go's in the lock. Dealer did that & 45000 miles later never a problem. I did my 20 when we brought it home & no problems. Makes it easier to close also. Just takes a wrench & 5 minutes. Never have to slam ,thats a no-no. Also, I lube with Dri-Slide. https://www.drislide.com/
