LOL...I was just saying that hospitals are for stopping death or dying. Other places are better suited for recovery and living. That's my take on hospitals anyway.

Apparently ... her evil plan worked. She is being discharged right after lunch today ... I gotta give her credit ... she gets her way. I've always believed "the squeaky wheel gets the grease", but, mom takes that to whole new dimensions.

    Default Change of Plans

Just got a call, apparently the "bug" is not growing as fast as they thought it would and they want to identify it before they release mom. They want to send her home with the right anti biotic ... so as the man on death row said, "Thanks for the reprieve, Governor!".

Personally, I think someone dropped the ball ... maybe Zeke Elliot (sorry couldn't resist a dig to the Dallas Fans) and the sample never got sent to the lab. Haven't been too impressed with the medical community lately.

Went to see mom today and as I was getting ready to leave, the Doc's PA came in. I decided to stay so I could get the straight dope.

He explained that on the knuckle of her pointer finger, they made an incision and drain the infection, flushed it and then packed it with anti bacterial packing and they wanted it to stay in one more day. They will remove it and redress her hand, then she'll be able to go home.

Mom swore she'd never heard that before. After the PA left, I said my goodbyes to mom and left. The PA was in the hall and told me both he and her doctor had told at least 3 or 4 times over the last three days. I told him I never doubted it, I suspect she ignored that so maybe she could talk her way out earlier. He laughed and said she's clever if not dangerous. LOL

So, you can see what I deal with all the time.

Alan, that sounds like a tendon sheath infection. I had one and lost dexterity in my index finger. Maybe worth talking to the Dr about?

From my experience in Hospitals....Not as a patient but as an affected observer..

The Doctors will tell the patient one thing, And tell the family something else...

I must be like your mom. I heard just what I wanted which was to leave the hospital when I had my accident. I did not hear I had to go to an intensive rehab facility. Ticked me off when I didn't get to go home. But I was glad to get out of the hospital anyway. Like I suggested, hospitals are there to save you or prepare you for burial.

The sooner you can get out the better. Too many germs running loose in hospitals not to mention the chances of getting the wrong medicine. Yes, that also happened to me while there. I question one pill I had not seen before and sure enough it was very wrong. They stopped short of saying it would have killed me but I got anything I wanted after the incident. I missed that at the rehab place. That place sucked. I think they enjoyed hurting me.

    Default Update 6

Just got a call from mom ... they removed the antibiotic laced packing from her hand and she still has an "active infection". They took new samples and repacked it with new antibiotic laced packing. According to mom, they did all this without the benefit of any kind of pain killer.

Of course, mom is on pain meds every 4 hours, so, I'm sure she wasn't in all that much trauma.

It did wear her out though, so she is planning a nap. I'll go see her and let her rant about her abuse around 3pm.

Now for the other shoe to fall. She will not be coming home for at least two more days and maybe more.

Default Can't believe I'm saying this.

I got a call around 9 am this morning ... I was on a ride with Kira and I pulled over to take it.

Mom tells me they are discharging her and she is "Infection Free" ... hmmm ... must be some miracle drug that cures "active infections in less than 24 hours.

So, I was worried about her strength level, but, she was able to walk from my car to the house, up the porch steps, and into the house. Apparently, she a tougher bird than even I thought. She had a prescription for pain meds but no more antibiotics

I guess time will tell how this plays out. But, she is home now and my problem.

Default Update 7 couple of surprises

Okay ... so mom has been doing a lot of resting and some complaining. I can deal with that ... I guess.

I was trying to figure out what I could get her to eat ... she needs to eat and drink fluids if she plans to fight this infection.

Anyway, the door bell rings, Annabelle goes nuts and low and behold, there is a nurse looking person at the front gate (She is wearing a stethoscope and has a computer). I checked her ID and the paperwork order for her to be here. Seems the hospital ordered this for mom and she didn't bother telling me and this wasn't in her discharge orders.

She seemed legit, so I let her in and we started the "admin" part of the process. At one point the nurse said something to the effect of "This is personal medical information." To which I responded, "I have a Medical POA". She thought this was a great thing because she would be able to contact me if mom for some reason didn't answer her phone (the company had been trying to get in touch with mom for the last 3 days, but, I found out her phone was dead and on the charger, but, the charger wasn't plugged in).

After the admin stuff was done she took the dressing off her hand and redressed it. It is looking better, but, not terrific.

    Name: IMG_0109.jpeg
Views: 170
Size: 696.7 KB

When that was over she asked if we had any questions. I had a few. Like, why wasn't she given antibiotics to take home? When does she go to see the surgeon for a follow up? And what should we be doing about changing the dressing?

So apparently there was a page missing from her discharge orders. This page gave those answers. The nurse had them on her computer and was able to connect to my printer and print that page for me.

She was told to continue the antibiotics she got in the ER two days before her surgery - Mom had told me the hospital took those away when they put her on the IV - I found them in her bathroom.

She was told to change the dressing everyday - we didn't have anything like the dressing and I would not know where to begin. The nurse ordered supplies for us and when they come she will train me how to do this. In the mean time, the nurses will change them every other day when they come.

Lastly, the discharge orders instructed us to call her surgeons office to set up a followup visit. I was gonna call Today anyway, but, now it's a given.

The nurse confirmed that what I've been doing for mom was the right thing as far as I took it, but, now I have the whole story.

So, that's the rest of the story. I feel better about being a "Caregiver" ...

Too early to tell ... she doesn't wake up until around 9am ... but, she is doing more each day which indicates to me she is getting stronger. She is definitely more coherent than when she first came home ... at one point she was trying to use the TV remote to turn off the coffee maker. Needless to say, that concerned me ... LOL ... but ... I think she was just really tired. She is getting better at being herself.

    Default Update 8

After getting home from the State Patrol Inspection, I spent a good hour trying to get mom to get dressed and ready to go do the followup appointment with the surgeon.

    What a pain.

The doc said that her hand was looking good and they had the infection under control. He also said it was "normal" for mom to be so lethargic and that at her age, the infection was really taking all her energy to heal. He recommended protein shakes and more smaller meals of high calories. He also gave us a prescription for therapy for her hand. She's having a hard time bending her pointer finger. They removed the stitches and she is to leave it undressed.

Apparently thee skin pealing is normal as new skin grows from below it.
