    Is the 131 going to run cooler than the stock motor. The other thing is Harley water cool bike any cool the exhaust seats instead of the cylinders and head like every other bike. Harley water cool is really hard to compare to others. Harley water cool is more of a band ad. in keeping it cooled. As far as losing that much power between those two temperatures there's has to be more to it.

    The 131 can run almost as cool as the 114 engine, but left to factory condition it is going to run much too hot.

    Here is a video where we talk about comparing heat on a Performance Plus Stage I 114 and 131, riding together.

    Both had the full suite of heat removal strategies in place.

    Both ran almost exactly the same temps, with the 131 running 10-15 degrees hotter.

    At the 7:20 mark is where we talk about MPG and Heat.



    The Twin Cooled set up ("water cool") is as you say, just coolant jackets around the exhaust valves. You would think even just that little thing would make it run cooler. BUT, on the Twin Cooled HD did two things that make the Twin Cooled run HOTTER than the air cooled only engines.

    1. They upped the compression, which increases heat, offsetting the cooling benefit of the coolant jackets around the exhaust valves.

    2. There is NO OIL Cooler on the twin cooled. So the oil that is absorbing so much heat has no real way to dissipate all that heat.

    We have a video showing the test results of the above about the Twin Cooled. I will post it below.

    Losing power between those two temperatures is very simple...there is not more to it....

    When the head temp hits 270 F, Harley does not want it to go higher, so they retard the timing (which results in a loss of power) in an effort to keep the temp from climbing higher. It is that simple at first blush, and I will post a video on that below also.

    However, as time and miles pass by on an engine that is consistently running too hot (over 230 F for oil and over 260 F for temp sensor) components will experience accelerated wear, which will result in an even great loss of power.
