Rear wheel bearing grease.

I bought new wheel bearings when i installed the DK axle plates and taking Jack Klarich advise i popped the seals and hand packed the new bearings and there wasnt a bunch of grease in them .So i popped the seals out of the old bearings and there was even less in the old bearings ,amazing what keeps them lubricated.

I have yet to see a sealed bearing properly lubed during assembly

Wow hard to believe but it really doesn't surprise me, beginning to think that is typical now a days on everything being built

Never thought to question if sealed bearings could need grease, where did you get the new

bearings, where they difficult to remove and install, Is this part of regular maintenance that the HD shop would check for ? Appreciate your feedback, I rather fix this before I get stranded somewhere

The bearings I bought are National Bearing ( Federal Mogul) and typically sealed bearings are non serviceable but taking info from Jack Klarich i carefully removed the seals to inspect and sure enough the amount of grease or lack of was kind of surprising ,so I added some good quality high temp grease to hopefully increase life span of bearing. And as far as removal you will need at least a 20 ton press to remove old bearings and reinstall, my 12 ton press barely got the bearing off of the short axle but wouldn't budge the bearing from the long axle( this is another story), so i took the long axle to the HD shop that I trust and they removed and reinstalled the new axle plate and bearing and retainer for $30. I installed the DK Custom heavy duty bearing retainers so it requires axle removal, so if you are not going to change axle plates don't be concerned about your bearings.

Good on you Steve. Your choice to pack the bearings will be rewarded in longer life and more trouble free miles for your trike I have never regretted packing sealed bearings, if I had a failure it was on me
