    Default Reverse Motor

    The reverse motor on my Freewheeler has not worked for awhile and it is time to fix it. Has anyone rebuilt their reverse motor? Is there a repair kit available? If so where did you get it?

    I do not want to go to a mechanical reverse.

    I took one apart and cleaned the brushes since they did not look worn. the brushes seemed to be sticking in the holders so I cleaned them and got everything freed up. it has been working for maybe a year so far. Just looked and there are a bunch of kits on ebay including just the brushes.

    Have not pulled it off yet. It is on the list of things to do this spring. I rarely ever use the reverse so it tends to slip my mind and I have not ridden much the past few months.

    Default Update, Reverse Motor

    Last week I finally removed the reverse motor from my Freewheeler. I sent it off to Performance Starter and Alternator in Canton, Ohio for rebuild. They got it yesterday morning and rebuilt it same day. It is shipping back to me today and I should have it by Friday. Total bill including shipping back to me is $319.00 plus I paid an extra $40.00 for a one year warranty instead of the basic 90 day warranty, so final bill is $359.00.

    According to the owner they did a total rebuild. Water had gotten inside and the brushes were stuck which shorted out the armature. They put all new bearings, brushes, armature, etc. They also sealed the original vent and added two oil holes in the back. He said for me to add a couple of drops of oil to it when I do an oil change on the bike and there would be instructions on this included. All sounds good, we will see when I get it back and reinstalled.

    On my 2011 Tri-Glide i had the reverse motor off 3 times, and rebuilt it myself and found that water getting in runes the insides..[Brushes]... the drain holes are there to let the water drain out.....That said there is ''No way'' to stop the water from getting in the motor...So i don't understand why they would plug the drain holes?...Any water that gets in [And it will] will just sit there and corrode the brushes and gum up the insides...

    Very good question Bob, a drain and or a vent hose similar to a G M starter motor is an absolute must have ( late model reverse motors have this style vent)

    As heat builds up moisture will form inside the motor, this is bad Ju Ju and will lead to premature brush and armature failure

    Can't beat that price. Over the last few years .have seen several use that shop in Ohio. I know if i ever have a reverse go bad, will send mine there. Let us know how it lasts. Hope it is all good for you Danny.

    I may have misunderstood him about the vent. Will have to wait and see when I get it back. Many (and I mean many) years ago when I was in High School and College I worked as a mechanic and I rebuilt plenty of starters, generators and alternators but I can't remember details about how they were built, if vented, etc.

    The reverse motor in the ''Tri-Glides''....Are Not starter motor's, They are a high torque low RPM Eclectic motor...And on the Tri-Glides they are mounted very low on the rear axle right where they will be in the water stream when driving through puddles or in heavy rain...

    Received the reverse motor back yesterday and installed it this morning. Works fine. The vent tube is still there so I don't know what he was talking about as regards the vent.

    I took a photo of the oil holes that the re-builder added but I can not get it to attach.
