Turning 71 and thinking about a trike

Welcome to TT! Three K on my GL1800/California Sidecar is 68MPH on the speedo.... same as before conversion. Actual speed is a bit slower due to speedo error. MPG is about 5 lower than 2 wheeler..... Jim

Welcome to a "Great" Forum. I found very little difference.

You will enjoy the ride, and the peace of mind.

Congratulations

Welcome to the forum from Western Pennsylvania moving to three will be a great experience. The speedo can be adjusted to fit on the harley at a shop or with a tuner. I changed my gearing by going to a taller tire in the rear lower my rpm's in sixth gear cruising by 300 to 400 rpm's motor isn't screaming at cruising speed. Travel safe Fred

Hey guys - I'm new here. I'm turning 71 next month and I've been thinking about getting a trike. My question relates to the difference in rpm's at speed on the level, say 70 and 80 mph with a Roadsmith kit, Harley in 6th vs Goldwing in 5th. Thanks much for the info.

Welcome Tom,

Not sure I understand what exactly your question is. "My question relates to the difference in rpm's at speed on the level, say 70 and 80 mph with a Roadsmith kit, Harley in 6th vs Goldwing in 5th."

Roadsmith has been building trike conversions for the Honda Goldwings and Harley tour bikes for many years and they provide the optimum gearset/ratio needed for the year, make and model of the bike its going on. The Goldwing's flat 6 engine make its power and torque at a higher RPM than the the Vtwin Harley, so RPM is going to be different relevant to each bike. Still unsure of your question, maybe you can provide a bit more info on what your concern is.

Hi Randy - I agree that my question wasn't clear. I have a 2014 Valkyrie right now and it's a sewing machine at 70 and a screaming sewing machine at 80. I think it runs 4k at 70, but I'm not sure at the moment. I just know it's annoying at speed. The reason I don't know the rpm's exactly is that I haven't ridden in 3 months and my memory is getting worse by the day.

So, I guess I need to explain why I'm not riding since I live in Florida. I had to lay down my VTX1800 two years ago and totaled it. I thought I escaped that event unscathed so I went out and bought a Valk at a bargain price. A couple months after the accident I started noticing numbness in my lower left leg and this progressed during the following months. It got to the point where I was having issues just balancing the bike at stop signs. It turns out I damaged two major nerves in my leg and finally I had to stop riding.

Anyway, I want to get a trike that runs at lower rpm's at speed than the Hondas, so I'm thinking Harley and looking for a comparison. I think the mention of Roadsmith in my question confused the issue. One of my options is to find another VTX1800 and put a Roadsmith kit on it. The VTX was less of a sewing machine than the Valkyrie but it is my understanding that the Harleys after 2008 have a true overdrive 6th gear (which Hondas do not) and I'd like to know what rpm's the Harleys run at 70 and 80 mph. Sorry for the lengthy post.

Thanks

Tom
