    Default Cataract Surgery

I had the first of 2 cataract surgery's done yesterday afternoon. I was a little nervous because they started doing a new procedure named DEXYCU. That involves an injection into the eye with a long lasting medication that eliminates the need for eye drops. The procedure was quick and painless. This morning the doctor took my eye patch off. What a difference! Everything is SO bright. Before surgery I had trouble reading the largest letters and after I can read the smallest on the eye chart. I have been using cheater reading glasses for 15 or more years. I sat down at the computer and automatically put them on. The screen was a little blurry. I was disappointed. Until I took them OFF! Everything is crystal clear with no cheaters. There are 4 or 5 different lens choices most of which cost $$$$$. I just went for the basic lens and I'm overwhelmed with the results. I asked the doctor about riding the trike. I told him that I have a windshield, full face shield and sunglasses. I was ecstatic. He gave me the go ahead right away. Surgery yesterday and I could be riding again today! (Taking the day off anyway) Next up, getting the right eye done the 8th of next month...... Jim

Good deal I got to get mine done soon. The Dr @ the Mayo Clinic told me to always wear sunglasses here in Florida. The UV is way to hard on our eyes

Had both eyes done ‘bout 3 yrs. ago. The sky is now a pretty bright blue and our white fence out back doesn’t have a slight orange tint any more. Couldn’t believe the difference afterwards! Had secondary cataract surgery done about a year later on one eye and will have the other eye done as it progresses. Eye Doc told me the secondary cataracts develop in about 40% of people that have the first ones done. Sunglasses are now a necessity if it’s not cloudy or if it’s sunny with snow on the ground. Prescription in my eyeglasses changed dramatically.

    Good news Jim.

Good luck on the next one.

I'm right behind you with getting both eyes done soon.

Was the eye injection to reduce eye pressures thus eliminating the need for the eye drops?

No. The injection, from what I understand, is an anti-inflammatory and infection inhibitor. I do absolutely zero eye drops both before and after surgery. I was a bit nervous when I found out I was going to get a shot in the eye. As it turns out, I didn't even know when they did it..... Jim

I'm a member of the club also. Had both eyes done a week apart. Much improved vision and brighter. No pain at all, but I did use the eye drops. Insurance covered it 100%.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Had the right eye done in 2015. Pain during the procedure and residual pain for several months thereafter. Plus... it was supposed to be distance vision. So my very best vision goes to about the end of the hood of my car. After that it is good but not as good as the shorter distance. Extremely disappointed after talking to everyone else...they had no pain and got their distance vision. And this mess was done by the highly acclaimed, award winning, number one doc in Midland, TX.

Therefore I have put the left eye off for as long as I can... am scheduled for it this coming Wednesday...distance lens, complete with drops routine. Hope the Kerrville doc does a better job..but I am nervous...

I was going to post the same thing. Good luck, Carla.

Had both mine done about 8 years ago. No pain during or after, was driving the next day. Have one eye for reading and other for distance.

Carla, will most likely be fine this time. Lots of improvement in the procedures over the past few years. Good luck!

From what I read, they inject something into the lower tear duct ??? Being it is new, does insure & medicare take care of it ??

Not sure about all the cost. I don't have very good insurance (medicare). Before the procedure they told me my cost would be about $200 and it came to $236. It make sense to inject medicine into the tear duct where it will be released with normal tears. The doctor did tell me that injection will become their new standard for most people.

The down side to this is now I see a lot more dust and smudges around the house. My former wife might have been right when she said I was messy. I didn't think so. But I couldn't see what I do now. I need to get a better house keeper. The one I had before the surgery (me) wasn't doing a very good job..... Jim
