    Default 22-250 reloading help

I bought a 22-250 Savage Axis and a whole bunch of reloads.

I tried to run a bunch of the reloads through the breech and eject them just to make sure that they would work.

I found a bunch that did not work and jammed in the chamber.

I talked to a gunsmith and he said to get a 22-250 small base die and that would fix it.

I have looked for days trying to find the die without success.

I figured that there has got to be someone out in the Dakota's where this gun is very popular for eliminating prairie dogs that would have such a die.

I would like to talk to someone that can help me figure out this problem or that could possibly run a dozen or so casings through their die to see if it makes a difference.

Like I said I have had no luck finding this die I figured my only hope was to find someone that had one and see if they would be willing to help me out.

    SO HELP....... Please

    Bubber

    AKA Steve

    Any leads are greatly appreciated.

they maybe fire formed to the last gun they were fired in. if they were only neck sized

they may or may not work in your gun. once they are fired they can be full length sized, trimed to length and loaded a then identified for that gun. you can't do anything until those are shot . get a go-no go tool also to check sizing if they go in the gage they fit your gun.

The original owner may have shot them numerous times and reloaded.

The first one that stuck we took the bullet and primer out and ran it through the full length die for 22-250. Don't know make and model of his gun.

Since I have both loaded and primed cartridges. I am going to try to cycle them through the chamber then sort the bad ones out. I still would like to run the known bad ones through the small base die. to make sure that the die can resize the casing.

That is why it would be great to have someone cycle a dozen or so cartridges through a small base die so I will have confidence it will solve the problem.

Are you pulling the bullits? if so dump the powder and try to fire the primer to make the cartridge safe, do not try to push the primer out with the resizing die!

do you have a loading manual if so go over the sizing info. i would still us a go-no-go tool instead of the gun's chamber

I have some cartridges that are loaded and some that just have primers in them.

We did take one cartridge apart by pulling the bullet and the primer and dumping the powder.

I am going to call MidSouth tomorrow and see about the die and order a go/no-go gauge for the 22-250 Rem.

The problem is definitely the body and not the neck.

I have tried Midway, actually I have been searching for days and have asked the major manufacturers of dies if the they have the small base die. No luck. I now have a call into Hornady and we will see if they work out.

Midsouth was just a lady who answered the phone she had no technical expertise about reloading. That is when I contacted Hornady.

I feel like I am chasing a ghost around with a butterfly net. Maybe they will need to use a net on me soon.

Anybody in the Dakotas that has info or anyone with a small base die for a 22-250 that would be willing to run dozen or so cartridges through there machine, please contact me.

I have kind of focused on the Dakota's because the 22-250 is a popular prairie dog gun, but I am interested in hearing from anyone that can assist in my quest.

Meanwhile I did order a go/no-go gauge for the casing.

    Thanks

Well I finally found a 22-250 small base die at Huntington Die out in California.

A very nice lady called me this morning from Huntington and said that they did have one in stock and it just happened to be on sale.

I ordered it on the spot and hope to get it in a week or so.

    She made my day!!!!!!!!

Now to see if it will work and fix my problem.

    Thanks Huntington!

I got the Small Base Die and tried it on a sample of cases and it fit the case gauge I bought, and chambered just fine, so I think this will fix my problem of not chambering the shells correctly and the shells not binding in the chamber.

I am so glad this fixed my problem and thanks for the input from the members here any other forum that I have visited for advice.

if they are only shot in that gun you can get by with neck sizing, youll get more reloads out of the cases. Enjoy the gun those Savages can be tack drivers Bob

I hope this isn't to late to comment but from the opinions expressed in this post, the one question that has not been asked is: What weight bullet were your reloads? You also didn't say if your Axis was new or not or if you had done a thorough cleaning of it after the purchase. Moly-coated bullets were once the rage until folks realized they left deposits in chambers and bores that were really difficult to clean. Not knowing any of those conditions, I can only assume that whomever created your reloads either seated the bullets a bit too far out of spec for the chamber of your rifle. Of course buying a new die will correct the problem of putting the cartridge back into SAAMI specs if you follow a good reloading manual. If you couldn't close the bolt on one of the reloaded rounds at all, then you could have both a cartridge that is beyond the OAL specified by SAAMI for the 22-250 and a damaged chamber. A go-nogo gauge won't correct that problem. A competent gunsmith will have to measure the chamber dimensions and either re-chamber the barrel or install a new one. I hope your problem has been resolved. Pulling the bullets, resizing and reloading components is time consuming but sometimes you have to do that. Just make sure you following a good manual. Good luck. The 250 is one of my favorite cartridges.

I have tried to follow the KISS method of analyzing this situation.

The go/no-go gauge shows me that the cartridge is oversize in the last 1/8" if the casing. I and when i ran it through the small base die all was right with the world.

So I dismantled the bullets, ran each on through the SB Die, and will reload and seat bullet to specification. All is good.

Thanks for the inputs but I now have a solution that will work.
