    Default Power Vision Question

I have my Power Vision gauge function set to indicate Engine Temperature and Head Temperature - I find the two temperatures [after warming up] only differ by a couple of degrees or read almost the same on my 2018 Tri Glide - is this normal on the M8 engine? I expected the Head Temperature would be somewhat higher than the Engine Temperature. Example -my 40 min. ride today at 50 degrees ambient, both temperatures were within 2 degrees of each other. [I have the Dakota Gauges which shows Head Temperature but I really think it is Engine Temperature as it follows the PV Engine Temperature read out from cold to operating temperature, not the derived Head Temperature].

I was looking at my temps today and the head temp was running about 10 degrees hotter than engine temp.

Yes - thats what I would expect something in the range of 10 to 20 degrees, depending on conditions. Somehow I am getting the engine temperature measured on both selected gauge functions. I have tried removing the head temp. and the engine temp and then reselecting - same result. I think I will contact Dyno Jet.

The Power Vision temp gauges are a bit confusing.

The ET is a direct readout of the temp of your sensor on your rear cylinder head.

The CHT is an algorithm derived number and it does vary from the ET some. Next time you're out, give it some serious throttle for 5 seconds or more, you will see the CHT drop some and the ET stay about the same.

That is because one of the factors that the CHT uses to display a number is the intake air temperature, which will drop when you are pulling larger quantities of air thru the intake manifold.

ET is used by the ECM for most of the lookup tables including the fuel tables and multipliers, while CHT is used primarily for spark temp correction.

I use my PV to monitor the engine vitals while riding and I do not use the CHT read out, I prefer to know that actual temperature of the rear cylinder head on the M8's. (On the Twin Cams it is a readout of the rear of the Front cylinder, which is why the ET generally reads cooler on a Twin Cam than an M8, since it is getting more wind)

Thanks Kevin - will just stick with ET. [Will give your 'serious throttle' a go, next ride - hopefully tomorrow, as it may be above 40F.]

My plan is to add a cam and air cleaner to my 20 TG. With that in mind is the Power Vision the "Go To" tuner and if so is there a certain model that is considered the best. I'm going to loose my warranty due to other changes I'm making so I figured screw it I might as well do the engine upgrades also.

I got my new license for my PV hooked it up, dropped in a stock improved tune, runs better, seems to have the same mileage, got a little over 250 miles on since. With the stock bars I couldn’t get it to mount the way I wanted, so I went with an Arkon mount, mc25mm17 system. Comes with a 17mm ball for the PV mount. I've had the Power Vision on my bike for two months (2019 Tri-Glide).....

I can't find a choice for Head Temperature.

I have Engine Temperature and Coolant Temperature, and display both.

There is normally around a 100 degrees difference between them.

Anyone know why I don't have a Head Temp choice?

Do you guys also have the Coolant Temp choice???

They don't call it Head Temperature. The ET is a direct read of the heat sensor in the rear cylinder head.

There is also a read out call CHT...which you would think would stand for Cylinder Head Temperature, BUT, that is the algorithm derived number I mentioned up above.

Yes, I have the Coolant Temp choice and run it sometimes. It varies a lot for me. On the interstate I'll see it floating around 160+-, but if I get slowed down it will climb pretty quickly, and, at or near, a stop it will get up to 190 pretty quickly.
