    Default Question about rear tire on front reverse mounted....

    A new front is starting to sneak up on me, and I have a question about putting a rear on the front mounted backwards.

    I understand that a rear could have a larger contact patch and deeper treads equaling more traction and longer wear, but what is the logic to mounting it so it turns backwards?

    It is the way the tire casing is spliced rear tires are constructed to hold the splice on acceleration. Front tires spliced to hold tight on deceleration, so back on front reverse so spliced is not stressed under braking easy peasey

    Fearless is correct. The center carcass is joined together with an angled bevel type joint. This joint is orientated so that as the tire rotates, the joint stays shut. As the rear tire provides drive and the front tire provides braking, the joint is made one way for the rear tire and the opposite way for the front.

    I use a Dunlop Rear Tire with Reverse Rotation on the front. I am very pleased with it. I keep the air at 40lb.

    Why not use the Avon Trike tire???

    Sorry but, 40psi = harsh ride!! I run 36psi, much smoother ride!

    You certainly can your choice however it seems several people have had repeated issues with them i.e. vibration etc. For the investment and time I prefer to stay with what I have experience with, the Michelin Commander II rear tire on front works beautifully for my needs. Handling dry or wet roads, braking, and not to mention wear. Why go else where for what might me a good tire. Good luck on your choice ride safe Fred

    I fully understand the reason for installing the rear tire backwards on the front, but what about the tread pattern? Wouldn't that contradict the rain dispersing design?

    I’m no tire engineer but in looking at different tread patterns I cannot see the logic. Avon is the most strange IMO. I think it’s a matter of preference and opinion on the part of the designers/engineers.

    I recall Harley’s fiasco when they introduced the D407 tire several years ago. Lots of problems with cupping so they reversed the tread pattern and called it a D408. I think I’m correct about this but if my memory if faulty I’m sure someone will speak up.

    From all the good reports I’m not all that concerned. I think worn tires with little tread depth are a bigger concern.

    I have ridden in driving rain with no problem, now r emember i slowed down considerably but still tracked really well. Even the occasional standing water there were no issues. For us anyway. Ride safe Fred

    Yep... I was skeptical at first reading about Rear Tire on front until... I ran across an older friend and rider many years older than me if you can imagine that. He's in his Ninety's he his words are your crazy if you don't we did it for years.

    A. “older” shop owner told me that the race community has ran rear tires on the front for many, many years. Softer compound, deeper tread, and better wear during race environments. Just makes sense to Me!

    That is what I thought at first...until I looked at every other matched front and rear tire on two wheelers and stock on the Trikes too.

    This video shows it, then you can take a look at some bikes and see the same.

    I just put a rear on the front reversed. Between that and the MONO shocks I put in the trike rides great!
    The first 65 years of childhood is the hardest.

    I had a Harley mechanic talk me into doing this on my 2019 after the front tire ran thin and kind on warped on me. I was skeptical, but did it on his advise. Best move I ever did. Ride was so much better both is ride and handling. I say go for it.

    I have over 18,000 on my Michelin Commander II and still going strong. Blue Collar Customs in Prescott Valley ordered and mounted mine. Look them up.
