    Default Different exhaust modification

I have a question similar in nature to Molokaimike, but a little different... didn't want to hijack his post.

On my 2017 TG, I have already changed my AC to a DK Outlaw 606, with External Breather System, and still running the stock headpipe and HD slipons. I have always wanted just a bit more rumble, but not screamin' ass loud, and I didn't want to remortgage the house for what they are getting for a lot of the aftermarket pipes. One suggestion was to remove the stock baffles and install DK Thunder Torque inserts... bought the inserts, but never did the baffle removal, as I was worried that it would be louder than I liked, but then I would be stuck having to buy new slipons anyway. A friend suggested looking at Fullsac Performance; they have a High Flow Baffle kit for stock Touring HD mufflers. This looks like it may just be the ticket, if they are louder than I like (Fullsac claims "slightly more rumble" and increased performance), I can add the Thunder Torque inserts (I may do that anyway for a low-mid bump). Jack, you seem to be a fan of the TT inserts, and I know from personal experience with my 2014 TG, I was pleased with the low mid when I installed 4" Rush slipons and Thunder Torque, and when I ran into the guy who bought it when I traded, he complained about the low end; I saw that he had removed the TT's to make it louder. I already have the bike tuned with a PowerVision, but I am thinking that with the stock headpipe I shouldn't need a change there.

    Any thoughts?

Mark, sometimes people mistake louder for more power, most times that is not true especially when you give up exhaust scavenging. I still stand behind the TT or similar items especially after baffle removal

On my 2014 touring bike I had the V&H monster oval slipons. They gave a low rumble with no harsh sound even during acceleration. In reading the description on the V&H site of their trike slipons it said that they have the same sound and performance of the monster ovals. I bought a set on Ebay for half price and put them on. They do sound like the monster ovals and give a nice low rumble and doesn't get harsh during hard acceleration. The tips of them are shaped to give good ground clearance. Check them out and if you like them do a search on Ebay and save some bucks.

According to V&H, the Monster Ovals will not fit the 2017 TGU. Thanks, but still moving to the Fullsac replacement baffles.

I know they won't fit on a trike. What I was saying is that the sound and performance is the same as the Monster Ovals but they are shaped to fit on a trike.

I've run the Fullsac baffles on my 14 but for different reasons than yours. I originally ran the 1-3/4" baffles to maintain low end torque. Later I went to 2" due to engine mods. The 1-3/4 do give you a little more sound than stock and the 2" even a little more but not obnoxious.

If you were looking for a different choice, I hear the FuelMoto Outlaws run well on M8s but I have no idea how they sound.

Thunder Torque Inserts™ will increase low and mid range power on any exhaust that is louder than stock, like all the V&H and the FullSac and any other slip-on that has a more open baffle than the stock "plugged" baffles.

The one exception is the Super Trapp style mufflers that use the discs. They do a very good job at reducing reversion with their unique design...no Thunder Torque Inserts needed with those. They are a pretty quiet exhaust also.

I installed the Fullsac High Flow Baffle kit on in my stock 2018 mufflers, wasn't much louder and was a little deeper. When I did the cam I removed the cats, it's almost to loud for me on acceleration and deep and mellow while cruising

Sheffer performance posted a dyno of a 124/128 bike that made 145hp with a stock decatted headpipe. So unless you are looking for every last ounce of power, a decatted pipe is a good place to start. About $120 more or less. I have a set of cvo muffs with 2” Fullsac baffles off my former rg, that will be going on soon. I tried and didn’t like the 1 7/8 baffles on the hyway on the rg. Sound difference is minimal to me. Although I ran straight pipes for my first 15 yrs way back when, lol.

I removed the baffles and installed TT on stock slip ons. I removed the cat from the head pipe and the sound i got is just right for me. Not to loud and is the cheapest way to change the sound.

    Default Update

Well, I installed the Fullsac Highflow baffle kit with 2.25" baffles. (Note that I still have the stock headpipe with the cat installed.) I have a set of the Thunder Torque W258 inserts, but did not install them as it was obvious that they would not work the way I thought they would; DK Customs techs told me I would need to install the smaller W158 inserts directly in the baffles.

Before I decided whether or not to do that, I naturally took the bike for a test ride. I was pleasantly surprised with both the sound and the performance boost. I did not notice any loss of low end torque (maybe just subjective thinking) but I did notice stronger acceleration, and I really do like the sound. It will take more riding under more different conditions to fully evaluate, but at this point I must say that I am pleased with the result. If I find that I want or need to add the TTIs I can still do that without taking the mufflers back off; putting the bike balck on the lift and removing the end caps will allow me to drill the baffle ends to install them.

P.S. a side bonus is that I ordered the Fullsac kit with the black tips; complements my overall de-chroming/blackout effort very nicely. This got me the looks, sound and performance I was after at a lower cost than buying new slipons.

P.P.S. One caveat if you are going to go this route; installation of the Fullsac baffles involves sliding them into the HD mufflers once the end is cut off and removed. The hanger brackets that HD welds to the outer shell have various degrees of burn-through to the inside of the shell that can cause an already tight fit to be an interference. This must be removed by filing (good luck) or grinding with a Dremel or similar to allow the baffles to be fully inserted; just an FYI. I was able to confirm this with Steve at Fullsac when I ran into it. Still, the whole conversion including removal and reinstall took about 4 hours.
