Rear End

I have a leaking rear differential. It is definitely coming out of the rear cover and it may be coming out of the front seal also. It's a mess so I can't tell about the front seal. It is also all over the radiator. It shows only a couple of drops on the floor, but what a mess underneath. I know it's a Ford, but I can't remember if it's a 6.5" or a 7.5". Does anybody have any more information about it? Thx Rick

rick I also have a drip out the pinion seal. But I've just been living with it. Sorry don't know the answer.

Rick, rare for a rear cover to leak but it can happen. You can use this to make a new gasket for the cover, for the pinion seal i believe a ford Ranger seal will fit. You can match up the numbers from the old seal at a parts house

Several years ago I made a couple of trips to the factory in Troup, Texas and both times had the full tour of the place. Both times I observed a mechanic shortening rear ends to fit the Stallion. Both times I was told they were Mustang rear ends. After cutting them down to size and reweilding them, they installed 410 gearing. I'm sure your local Ford mechanic could look and tell you what you have. Tomg

Just came back from the shop. They're pretty sure it's the pinion seal. Since I don't have a lift, and I don't feel like laying under it, I'm going to let them do it in a couple of weeks. Rick

Just for info, when a shop had it apart, when I was looking at changing the gearing, whoever put it together didn't have it set up correctly and the gears were rubbing on the housing. Rick

Tom, you are correct. It is an 8.8 Mustang rear end. When the did the seal, they said it was from a 2004 Mustang.
