    Default Rear Tires

I bought my trike in 2015 and the rear tires were new or so i was told. I have put about 16000 miles on them. I am wondering even though it has always been garaged stored and taken good care of if I should consider getting new ones, before we take a 1200 mile trip next month. It has Goodyear wide radials on it and they still look new, no sidewall cracking etc...I did a search for rear tires and not a lot of threads showed up..

Look at the tire DOT number, it will give you the date of manufacture

To my knowledge no trikes were shipped from the factory with Goodyear tires

Here you can see an example of how to read a tire DOT

Thanks for the info, but as stated by others my trike is a conversion and if you had paid attention to the section of the forum you would have known that. I know how to read a tire sidewall, and was asking for general opinions. As stated the bike is stored in a garage when not being ridden and the tires show little wear and are in great shape...Again thanks, but please pay attention to the section and or description. Harley didn't make trikes in 08 as far as I know...

Joe even though the tires look great you have to make a decision for yourself here. From all the reading that I have done, most tire people say to replace tires when they are 6 to 8 years old depending on who is making the statement, I have read both.

I will give a personnel example. I am a Captain with the Sheriff office here. 3 months ago one of our Lt's., who assign admin vehicle is a Chevy Impala, was driving to work when she started feeling a thumping. She stopped at my house and I noticed that one of her tires was starting to split open in the middle of the tread. The tires were 5 years old with only 20k miles on them. From the outside they looked in excellent shape, but they dry rotted from the inside. Tires were all replaced.

Now I'm not saying replace your tires, I'm just saying what I have read and giving an actual example. If it were me I would take the ride, but I would also be looking at replacing the tires when it was convenient.

Trike rear tires will wear forever because of the light load on a tire that was designed to carry a heavier load. So that leaves the replacement decision up to the owner. Those tires may very well be in great shape BUT you cannot see the inside of them.

Now about your reply to Jack.

As the senior moderator, I try to keep things civil on the forum. I mostly read the trike associated postings. I read your initial post and as MOST readers, I do not go to the posters profile to see what the ride is. Your Avatar shows a Harley Trike. From the small picture you cannot tell if it is a TRI or a conversion. Most Harley trike owners on this forum I'm sure are TRI owners. There are many conversion owners also. Your opening statement said you bought your trike in 2015 and were told that the Goodyear tires were new. Anyone just reading that does not know the year of the trike, or if it is a TRI or conversion, and if a conversion what year it was converted. Only that you purchased the trike in 2015 and were told the tires were new.

Jack responds with information on how to tell the age of the tire by the DOT manufacture imprinted date. He has no way of knowing that you are already familiar with that as most people are not. He may have assumed that your trike was a new 2015 TRI and made the statement that TRI's did not come with Goodyear Tires new.

Jack had no way of knowing that the information he was providing to you was not necessary, but he was replying to what he felt he understood from what he read in your post.

Responding to the printed word is very tough because the responder always puts their personal interpretation into what they read and then responds. The person who posted may have a whole different perspective that did not come through to that responder. Just as an example your response to Jack was interpreted by me as being critical that Jack did not take the time to look and see that your trike was a "08" Motor Trike conversion before answering and that he knew that you already knew how to read the date the tire was made.

Now I do not personally know Jack, just that he makes a lot of good responses to members on this forum, so how he took your response I cannot say, but he could have very well been miffed.

So with all this being said, I am saying is for everyone to try and keep their posts positive. What you put down does not always get read in the same mind frame by all that read it. Cut people some slack. Also their response may not have been helpful to you, but someone else reading it could have got good info for themselves. A good example is the tire date made posting, many readers could say to themselves "OK" that's how I can know. After all even though you purchased that tire new "How long was it on the shelf or in the rack"

Enough said, keep the negative stuff in the "JUNGLE" forum and remember perspective. THANK YOU
