After changing mufflers this weekend I started to think about the clearance issue with the intermediate pipe. A thought popped into my head about changing the angle of the pipe coming out of the header. If you took a saw or grinding wheel cut from the bottom the the exit pipe up to almost the top, heated the top and bent that down and welded it, it would allow a better angle, with more clearance to put a larger pipe with less severe bends in it. Might allow a muffler shop to make the pipe as well. Just thinking out loud, lol. Any thoughts?

Me’ I do most of my thinking on rainy days but your idea sounds plausible but then you will have to find a Muffler shop that’s willing to take a challenge..

When I changed to an IRS rear end I made a new crossover pipe with less bends and no flattened section like the OEM pipe. The problem I had was finding a muffler shop that had the small diameter pipe. I ended up at an auto parts store that carried premade muffler pipe pieces. I found a straight piece that had a bell on one end and a pre-bent 90* with a bell on one end. I took these to the muffler and they were able to make what I needed. I also made a mockup of what I needed out of PVC joints so that the muffler shop could use it to copy from.

I was actually thinking about your post with the pvc mock-up as a great idea. If you still have your intermediate pipe laying around, could you measure the overall length of the pipe? Reducing the pipe size vs angles vs length is the biggest challenge. The V&H xpipe with the trike extension pipe is looking more feasible except for the price, lol.

The OEM pipe is 31" in total length with 7 bends and a section that is flattened which is 10" long and only 1" OD. The new pipe that I had made is the same length with 2 bends and maintains it's round shape the entire length of the pipe.



On the mockup I couldn't find a 90* sweep so I used 2 45* couplers, when I had the pipe made it has a 90* not 2 45* bends. I didn't take a photo of the new pipe but I do have one of it installed.

I suffer from that affliction too. When I lived in Seattle I had a lot of thinking to do. Now that I live in the desert I just sit here with no thoughts at all...... Jim
