Default Harley Heated Grip Installation 2021 FLHTCUTG

Bike in question is a 2021 Tri Glide...FLHTCUTG.

Before I buy Harley heated grips and plan the install (p/n 56100034, same as I had on my ‘14 Ultra Limited) I see the application note for that part says I also need Electrical Connection kit 69201599 (for ‘17 and later Touring and Trike).

I’ve heard reports that this Connection kit may not be needed as many fairings were pre-wired with the correct connections for the left and right side.

Has anybody done this install on a 20/21 TG and were the connectors already there?

Didn’t need it on my 2018 TG. It was pre-wired. Would think yours is also.

Thanks, Jerry... I suspect you are right.

I have to get into the fairing this weekend to install my new Custom Dynamics LED windshield trim and plug the Carplay bypass plug into the back of the radio, so that will be a good opportunity to verify the plug locations and the presence of power.

When I had the fairing apart on on my 2020TG it had the connectors and wiring harness already there for heated grips.

Put a bead of sealant around the open ends of the grips when you install them.

Rain leaked into mine and shorted them out.

Just finished pulling the fairing to install a Custom Dynamics windshield trim and the Carplay bypass plug behind the stereo...and I looked.

The connectors and wiring appears to be there...now to order grips!

Where did you get the Carplay bypass plug from?

On the 2021 the fairing harness connector for the heated grips (12VDC feeder) is connector 189B at the bottom of the diagram. The 189B connector is on the right side of the fairing as you are facing the front of the bike with the outer fairing removed.

The 12V goes into the Left (clutch-side) grip where the heater control resides and comes back out, then connects to the Right grip handle (which is pre-wired thru the handelbars) via connectors 206A/B.

The 206B connector is in the upper-left side of the fairing facing the bike with the outer fairing removed, adjacent to the other harness coming from the throttle side (204B connector...easily identified by 2 red, 2 white and 2 black wires going into it).

Looks like you got it all sorted out. That's the way it was on my 2018. I may have to get some heated grips for my 2020. Figured I wouldn't be doing cold weather riding as much as I used to but heck when the temps even in the low 50s those heated grips feel pretty good. And yesterday was one of those days - no sun at all and temps in the low 50s for our 220 mile lunch ride.

Been looking at heated grips and got confused. I know I'm easily confused, lol. Anyway when I added heated grips to my 2018 TG I got the standard black rubber p/n 56100034. I know they fit my 2018 but there is a statement that they fit with the OEM Stainless Steel handlebars but not fit models with Chrome handlebars. Can't quite figure out why this would be. I've swapped bars to the Chrome Werks 2+2 Narrow Sweepers and as the names says I guess they are chrome. Hmmm.

Even more confusing is that I'd prefer the Chrome & Rubber heated grips p/n 56100267 as I currently have the non-heated version of these on my TG as well as several other parts of the Chrome & Rubber collection - brake pedal, etc. Instructions say power wires for these grips must be run externally. Why is that I wonder. Even worse the heated version for my 2020 TG is the 'small' grip (1.3" diameter) while the non-heated ones are 1.6" diameter which I prefer. There is a 'large' version of the Chrome & Rubber, p/n 56100264, but instructions say it won't fit my 2020 TG. No mention of not fitting chrome handlebars with either of these two part numbers.

Harley has definitely had some issues on which parts will and will not fit on some other parts. Just wonder if that might be the case here also. But I'd like to chase it down before I order anything.

If anyone has any experience with any heated grips other than the 56100034 please chime in. Thanks in advance.

Installed the heated grips (56100034) on the 2021 TriGlide...2 hour job, fairly simple.

Prewire was there, and you DO NOT have to take the ignition switch cap off to do the wiring like some videos imply.

Only fly in the ointment was the end cap on the throttle side was missing from the kit 🤬.

Quick call to the supplier - they are express shipping me an end cap.

Sucks when a project is held up by a $2.47 part.

Good news is every works fine.

Hmmm, I purchased the very same grips for my 2018 TG and the end cap was missing in the kit I got also. Good to see the moco's QC is holding it's own, lol!

Glad you got the project done and all is working well.

Just come across your thread re heated grips wiring and thought I would pick your brains if I may to see if you might have an answer to my issue. Trying to get a new set of HD grips working on my 2018 Tri Glide FLHT CUTG Ultra. I have the two plugs connected to 189 and 206 connectors as per the fitting instructions. However, I appear to have no power when I use my multimeter set to 12V DC across the 189 plug. This appears to be the case whether the engine is running or not. Is there another connection I need to make somewhere? Tearing my hair out over this one!

I should add I am in the UK with a UK Tri Glide but surely that wouldn't make a difference?

    Regards

    Bob

Hi Bob. See you're still having trouble. Bummer for sure. Hope this helps.

I have the 2018 Touring Service Manual Trike Supplement which I purchased for my 2018 TG which I kept even after I traded for my 2020 TG. I looked at the wiring diagrams - Front Lighting & Hand Controls and Fairing Harness. These are the diagrams that show the connectors in question. The only difference in your English version is that you have left and right headlamps and you do not have the left and right auxilliary lamps as we do in the US. You definitely do have the 189B connector and I see no reason you you should not have power there unless there is some fault. I don't think there is any fuse that controls this that would not also control other functions which you would have noticed. Your problem appears to be no power to the 189B connector. On the other side of the fairing in about the same place is the 132C connector - Front Power Outlet. I don't know if the 189B and 132C connectors are the same type and your grip power connector would plug in to 132C. If not and after you verify power to 132C you might perhaps try jumping between the wiring on 132C and your grip power wiring using Posi Taps just to verify that the grips do in fact heat. Don't know if I'd be comfortable leaving such a connection in place since my electrical knowledge is limited. I do use the 132C connector to power my Garmin GPS using Posi Taps.

Thanks for that. I am aware that the EU has decreed the difference in headlight but cant grasp what that would mean for the wiring to heated grips…….
