Default Miles on trike before trannie oil to primary

Just curious how many miles everybody had on the transmission oil going to primary or even if it did. Mine hasn't did it yet, was at the dealer yesterday getting oil and filter and the head boss in service how many miles. Basically he said check at 1,000 and then at 5,000. He also informed me that if it happens it is up to me to pay them or do it myself, he said it isn't recall and I flat out told him it should be, harley screwing up on the M8's and some of the twin cams ones also did it, he also said not all of them do it either, go figure.

Has anybody used the Greg Williams rod to help stop the leakage, seen a video on youtube, it impressed me, stock rod was loose in there and his rod is a fairly good tight fit, I could do that with no problem, drilling a hole and doing the other thing not to sure I want to tackle that.

    All for now Trampas

With all my tri-glides I change all three holes at a thousand miles after that it’s oil and filter only every 5/6000 miles..... with my 17 Triglide because of oil transfer they were doing it free of charge every 800 to 1000 miles till I get rid of it.. At one point Harley was recommending 20,000 mile changes on the transmission don’t know if they’re still doing it?

    Trampas.

Mine transferred a little from the 5000 mile service and beyond. It wasn’t much. The HD vent is a proven fix and easy to do. The entire kit from Surdyke was about $35. While I was in the primary I changed the spacer behind the clutch pack to the slightly thicker one that came out in 2019. It moves the point of engagement closer to the grip. Cost for it is about $12.

The vent and the clutch change took less than 2 hours. They are worth your time and I highly recommend both. The clutch rod seemed more like a bandaid approach to me and I wanted a permanent fix.

Just to add to my previous post on my 17 Harley tried the first fix that they came up with it was a plug with a gasket and It only made it worse on my 19 now they have the vent from the factory already in it... Time will tell if that works I only have about 4500 miles on it?

Mine did not transfer in the first 1000 miles, but soon after I noticed it transferring quite a bit.

Installing the Primary Vent was covered under warranty, but was literally less expensive $ wise and timewise to do it myself.

Below is a video of the install...drilling, with care, is not difficult.

Service manager at Miracle City HD in Titusville FL said if it was going to transfer it would do it by 5K to 10K, if not you were good. Not sure I put 100% faith in that, but my '17 has 28K on it now, and no transfer.

I will keep watching, especially since I moved from FL to IN and got ripped off of my prepaid maintenance plan (thanks SCHD and MCHD that just cost me $1500!) but so far so good.

They all didn’t transfer and that’s what drove Harley crazy they couldn’t figure out why some did but most didn’t ...

    100% right Bob.

Harley will never admit the hydraulic clutch set up caused this problem IMO

    I had a 15 Freewhheler and a 17 Freewhheler ( both hydraulic clutches)

Neither one ever showed a sign of transfer

Some got lucky, others not so much

I now have a 21 Freewheeler, ( it has a cable pull clutch) , keeping a close eye on it , tho it has the HD Factory approved primary vent fix on it from the factory

IMO, HD should have recalled all the early hydraulic clutched bikes and fixed them for free

Jack I’ve been on Harley Davidson forms since 2011 and started to hear about the new M8 2017 with a transferring the trans oil. But never heard of a free wheeler transferring ?..There were M8 two wheelers transferring. Also ... I think they went back to the cable clutch not because of transferring but because the cable is cheaper and less complaints about engagement points and hard to pull the clutch lever in and hold it in!

Bob, I think HD got a 2 for going back to the cable clutch There has been documented cases of trikes with M8 engines transferring, some did and some did not

The transferring problems along with clutch problems plagued H D models further back to the early days of the Twin Cams

I did the primary vent kit and have had no trouble. Seemed like cheap peace of mind.

Thanks for all the replies, harley sure screwed up the M8 IMHO, but they had problems with the twin cam also.

Hey Jack I see you have a 2021 now, surprised you traded your 2017 in with all the work you put into your 2017, I presume you kept your power vision for the 2021, I know when I sold my 2016 I let the power vision go with the bike, a very very big mistake, should have kept since another liscense would be $200, not sure about the price now but I should have kept it.

After a rest ride on the 21 with the 114 I was sold

This Freewheeler has tons of snort even compared to my 17, my wife said trade now before she retires, I could not argue with that

The PV will not work on the 21 yet, HD changed the ECM and plug

Their will be a need for a new data plug and maps, I dunno when they will be available.

I kept all my add ons from my 17 just because

I understand and sounds like a good wife to tell you to trade, some are like that and some are not. I have read that fuel moto is working on something for the 2021's so a tuner can be used. Sounds like harley to do that and then you have to buy their tuner which isn't worth a crap, I still say the EPA is running harley, don't know for sure but it kinda sounds like it, everything harley wants to do the EPA says no.

Enjoy the new ride, my dealers around here don't have any to test ride, guess that is a plus in my book, I would trade also.

Sounds like harley to do that and then you have to buy their tuner which isn't worth a crap, I still say the EPA is running harley, don't know for sure but it kinda sounds like it, everything harley wants to do the EPA says no.

Enjoy the new ride, my dealers around here don't have any to test ride, guess that is a plus in my book, I would trade also.

    All for now Trampas
As of a week or so ago, when I spoke with Dynojet, they have broken into the 2021 ECM and are now working on the interface.

It won't be long before (June or July is what I was told) the Power Vision is working with the 2021 models. As far as I know right now there are no flash tuners that are working with the 2021 M8's, stock or built.

V&H with their FP3 is also working on this. I expect the FP3 to be available for the 2021 M8's soon also.
