SAN DIEGO (AP) — Dave Severance, the Marine company commander whose troops planted the American flag on Iwo Jima during World War II, a moment captured in one of the most iconic war photographs in history, has died. He was 102.
What many don't know is that there were two flag raisings. The second is the one know world wide.

"I don't need a map. I still have a road in front of me!"
My dad piloted landed landing craft at Iwo Jima.
He would not say anything else except that he was there.
They were truly the greatest generation.
You don't quit riding because you get old.
You get old because you quit riding.

Big salute to these 'Patriots' they are in a better place.
Wife's late dad was there. Being a Nam vet, I discovered later on that I was the only one he'd open up to. He had pretty severe PTSD. His way to handle it was booze. Ironically, that didn't kill him directly. Brain cancer. He was a heavy pipe smoker too. RIP Joe.

My 3 Uncles were in North Africa and then Sicily and Italy .....Two of them never spoke of WW2....And both of them were heavy drinkers....The youngest was killed at Anzio and my Grandmother always said their war experiences and losing a brother was why they drank... Both of them pasted away at an early age....In their 40's...

My uncle was in the battle of Iwo Jima and saw the flag raising. He was in H company 3rd Battalion
28th Regiment 5th Division. Landed in the third wave and said it was sheer horror. Was wounded 16
days later and carried of of the island. Lived to be 87 years old. Got married raised a family owned
his own business. Never talked about Iwo. What a great generation.
