Champion Trunk door wont stay latched

Hello all, this is my first post to your forum.

I recently (last week) purchased a 2006 VTX 1800 with a Champion Trikes conversion.

I love my new ride and have been enjoying it so far, (except for 1 thing)...

The dang rear trunk door WONT STAY LATCHED !

It seems to pop open (at random) while I am riding. This is naturally very frustrating.

I am a experienced "gearhead", (not professional), but not just some novice either. I clearly understand pretty much All Things mechanical in nature , but this dang rear trunk door is driving me bonkers !

It does not stay closed, and will pop open at random while I am riding.

Has anyone here had this same issue ?

I'm about at my wits end.

I have tried adjusting the latch, door position, hinges, EVERYTHING !

BUT

I Cannot seem to get this puppy to stay closed and LATCHED.

It has popped open at least 6 times this week.

The last thing I want is to lose my stuff out of the trunk while riding.

I'm going bonkers with it.

Has anyone else here had this issue?

It has a "Southco" plastic latch, that I am assuming is the factory equipment.

I have tried adjusting the door position up and down, I have tried tweaking the angle of the catch plate/tab, and it seems like there is a excessive amount of load on the door on the closing position caused by the weather stripping.

I literally have to SLAM IT shut to get it to latch closed.

I fire up the bike, and it pops open.

I slam it shut again, and it pops open inside of a 1/2 mile.

I have tweeked the metal latch, (at the top of the trunk compartment) to try and acheive a solid locking/latching action

It seems to latch good and tight. But it does not take long for it to pop open again.

The Southco latch is all plastic, and when closing/slamming it shut, it seems to catch the closing bracket very well.

But

It also pops open' at the most, in convenient times .

Any help/suggestions with keeping this thing closed and LATCHED and closed will be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Ron

Anyone ever had this issue on there Champion trink door ?

Have you tried calling a Champion dealer and asking them? Or quite possibly one of these fine gents that owns a Champion kit will respond with either good advice or the right part to buy to fix the concern. But remember, this is Maggie Valley week so some of them could be on the road(s). Give it some time.

Actually Yes,

Champion trikes was originally in Garden Grove, Ca. (6 miles from where I used to live),

But the company got sold, and is now Champion Trikes of Arizona, (6 miles from where I live now !) Haha.

I went over there and talked to them the other day. I picked up a new latch, but it is having the same problem.

Driving me nuts !

I've only had the trike for a month, been enjoying the heck out of it, and just trying to deal with the few issues it has.

Pretty hot here right now, but when it cools off in a few hours, I'll tinker with it some more.

Just hoping to hear from some members here that may have experienced the same and how they corrected it.

Cheers
