    Default 2015 HD Freewheeler Idling Hard - Shaking Like Crazy

    Could use some direction troubleshooting this issue.

    In the last week or so my trike started idling really hard. If I take my hands off the handlbars it shakes so hard it knocks the mirrors out of adjustment. I am also hearing what sounds like a hissing noise - like air is leaking. I can't see anything obvious as the cause for the sound or the shaking.

    Any ideas of what I should check/look at as the potential source of this issue???

    From what you describe it sounds like the engine is only firing on one cylinder...So the first thing i would Check is the spark plugs and the spark plug wires..By the way how many miles are on the engine?....And also have you had any work done on the the trike before this started....??

    Thank you for the reply! It's a 2015 with only 1,085 miles. I bought it in 2020 and it only had 250 miles on it. Had oil change and maintenance check in November of 2020. That's the last service/work I had done on it. The spark plug wires are in excellent condition. The spark plugs have some slight rusting as the previous owner kept it under a car port - exposed to some weather, rain, moisture.

    Runs fine - just idles way too hard/rough and once you take your hands of the handlebars it vibrates-shakes really hard - more than what was. The high/rough vibration will actually start moving my side mirrors out of adjustment and they are on tight. As soon as you give it some gas the shaking stops. As soon as you let off the throttle - to idle - it goes right back to hard vibration/shaking.

    It wasn't idling this hard a month ago and just started recently after I had been riding on some really roughly paved backroads (potholes, steel plates in pavement, rough pavement with a lot of bouncing and slamming). The issue started after several trips down some rough roads and rides. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or just a coincidence.

    There's a feature, at least of the Milwaukee Eight motors, that shuts down the rear cylinder if it detects overheating, such as being stuck in a long traffic jam on a very hot day. The rear cylinder kicks back in as soon as you apply the throttle. Your sensor may be malfunctioning.

    You could have a vacuum leak @ the intake manifold, but first I would run a trouble code diagnostics

    One other point of interest is the plug @ the throttle body. These connections are famous for problems, look @ this picture # 12 is the throttle body, there will be an electrical plug on it, the wires sometimes wiggle a bit and the pins get a bit corroded. Cleaning the connections and putting some dilectric grease on them can some times fix such a problem.

    Also of note many times the throttle plate and IAC need a good cleaning

    I see you mentioned a hissing noise like the sound of air

    This sure sounds like a vacuum leak

    I would start the trike, block the rear wheels so it does not roll away on you.

    Spray some WD40 around the intake manifold, does the engine idle up more?

    If it does the intake flange seals could be the leaking ( air ) sound you hear and be the cause of the way it is running/ shaking

    This post just reminded me that I had to have the seals replaced on my 2015 Freewheeler at my 5K service.

    Excessive heat is the killer of the seals, misaligned intake manifolds and loose bolts holding intakes and air cleaners ( support brackets) all contributing factors
