Default Stallion airwings

I will qualify my opinion right up front- I like the Stallion for it's slick lines, and I have never liked the bolt on chrome this and that look of the Gold Wings. I have said that in the past, that I enjoy looking at them but not cleaning them. With that said, I am not a big fan of the baker style air wings from the look of them, as I feel they break up the flowing look of the Stallion. I understand they are like that to serve a purpose, of reducing the wind on the passenger.

In the beginning of the summer I spotted a set of wind deflectors that I had to have. They were on a black demo bike at Wing Ding in SC. After seeing it I called TBMS and asked about it. They the told me they did not know anything about it. A few weeks ago in Asheville at Wings over the Smokies, I seen the same black demo Stallion, and when asked about those air deflectors this time, I was told that TBMS were developing these and they are in the final stages of design and testing, and they will be available shortly.

I will try to post a picture of this type of air wing when I get it.

The best way to describe it, is it is a chrome bracket that bolts to the flat spot above the break and gas peddle. Then parallel to the side body in the cut out section it has a clear Plexiglas face that looks like it is cut the the exact size of the opening with a slight bend out. It really fits the look of the Stallion well, and in my humble opinion it works with it. Now, with that said I cannot say for certain which design works better, but I would assume the baker wings mounted on the outside of the body and the bottom of he mirror would be far superior in performance to the single deflector that is mounted in the opening of the body.

I am willing to compromise a little performance to maintain my Stallion's flowing looks. If you have either deflectors mounted on your Stallion I would like to know how much it reduces the wind for the driver and passenger, and specifically if it reduces he wind noise on the driver from the turbulence created by the windshield?
One final note, I heard a little about a designer who was working on a fiberglass insert into this cutout area that would serve two purposes; one being a wind deflector, and the other being a Cubby hole to add additional storage room. If you know or are working on this please post anything you have for us to see. It is great to see multiple options for the Stallion, I look forward to seeing more.

Thanks for the great post CJmitch!

I agree with you Mattel, I’d like to see something that enhances the Stallions lines instead of the biker style air wings.
I installed my Baker Wings today. They definitely reduce the
turbulence in the cockpit. Should be an improvement for
the co-rider also.
They look intresting I would have to think about that one. I did order the Wind DAMS as swtrikes calls them. and I ordered the Fuzeblock FZ-1 that you got Joe. But I may still leave my fuze Block inplace.

When I was on the phone with SouthWest trikes we talked about the tops that the rumors were going arround.

He said they all failed. But he had a new design a little driffrent approch then the others. He hope to get back on that in a few weeks.

OH The d-tailing got delayed. The building next door caught fire. Their shop is ok little smoke and water damage but in-tact.

Looking at the picture that cjmitch posted, seems that the air deflectors are just regular Baker Air Wings on a bracket that fits to a Stallion. They look exactly the same as the ones on our 1500 Goldwing, even the hand wing under the mirror. As they seem to be designed for a motorcycle, not the Stallion, they look like a quick adaptation - they don't seem to "fit". Maybe they will design a set just for the Stallion, and clean up the looks a bit.

I ordered the air dams yesterday. Received an e-mail from them today, said they were flooded with orders for them. He is saying 7-10 days. I know the air wings don't look "politically correct",
but I was willing to try anything to reduce the wind turbulence, just like with the muffler it looks terrible under there but I couldn't stand that obnoxious noise any longer after getting off a Gold Wing.
I had the idea of putting one of the wings across the top of the windshield, the way the hinges are made it could be moved up and down okay. Somebody needs to come up with an air dam that would go across the top. I believe that would do a lot to reduce the cockpit turbulence a lot.
As far as the way the wings look, folks that have never seen a Stallion don't know the difference. lol!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Fortsand, I would recommend ebay for those. That is the problem we have when we forge too far ahead.

But the good news is my new muffler is installed. I appreciate your posts of the pictures with such short notice. I will post that story under the other thread.

    Thanks again for your help.

I'm interested in functionality as opposed to 'appearance.' I don't particularly like the looks of 'wings' on Wings but they do perform as advertised. Same on the Stallion???

There was no drilling required on the Baker windshield wings,
so if something better comes along I can upgrade with no problem.
Meanwhile, I am enjoying the reduced turbulence. The looks really
    don't bother me that much.

We have a set of Baker Air Wings on the trike, a 1995 GL1500. They do a great job of directing the air away or to the riders, as required. As to the functionality, it you look at a 1500 vs. an 1800, you'll see that the deflectors are entirely different, as the fairing is a different design between the two, with different airflow characteristics. I was wondering about the airflow on the Stallion, and if a product that works very well on one applicaton (GL1500 in our case) is as effective on another. The lower 2-part wings look like they would might work ok, but the wing under the mirror looks like it could be redesigned to fit better, and give better coverage.

    Kookie,
I am not sure who built it, But I am sure Southwest Trikes is selling it. I have not seen any pictures showing the sides or the rear of this deflector. How does it attach? Is it easy to take on and off? And most of all, if anyone has it on their bike, does it work?????? If you or anyone else has one or can answer these questions or better yet post some photos, have at it!!!!!! They are by far the nicest looking solution to the wind on the passenger problem, but they look like they may suffer from not being adjustable, and in the summer they may keep the wind off the driver. Need more Info!

Default Serria J&M 2003 CB/Intercom kit beeping problem

If you installed the J&M intercom kit in your Stallion (by Sierra Electronics) and you followed the instructions you will have a beeping tone when you start your Stallion. It is hard to hear. I was able to figure out it was coming from the computer, just below the dash. It will go away after a while. From my understanding it comes from taking out the number 9 fuse. This is labeled as an unused fuse in the instruction book from TBMS. Sierra did not realize that this was the seatbelt or open door fuse.

I understand the fix for this is to put back in the fuse and run the wire along side it, or find power in another location. The key is to find switchable power, like in this fuse.

Putting back in the fuse will solve this problem, and end that annoying beeping!

    Post Stallion J&M 2003 Kit

I am not sure if I posted my install on my J&M 2003 intercom kit from Sierra Electronics yet but here it is. You can purchase the kit from here:

    Products

Don't let that list price fool you, if you do not have helmets and lower cords for the J&M it will run you about 1k by the time you are finished.

Once I received the kit I realized that I may have bit off more than I could chew. This kit is not for anyone who is not good at installing things and understands electronics. I would estimate my total install at about 10 hours.
Be prepared to drill, and you can get away without soldering, as all the connections are already to go with the kit.

The kit came in separate packages. It went together well, but you must go into it knowing that the instructions were rudimentary, basic at best. The pictures in the instructions look great in color, unfortunately, the ones they included were in black and white, and you cannot make out a thing in them!

You can always call the 800 number for Sierra Electronics if you get lost and they were more then patient with me when I called.

The antenna that they use was an FM only antenna. They do not tell you that when you use that antenna you will only get your CB or FM radio. I would have liked it better if they had picked an antenna that would work with AM, or that they had included a small AM loop with a splitter. At the very least they should have provided some information on this in their instructions. Each component had its own set of instructions, like the antenna, and I found myself constantly shuffling between the separate instructions, I wish they would have taken the time to create just one set of instructions.

You will also need to find the instructions on your radio that shipped with your Stallion. It will tell you where to connect in for the audio connections. Be carefully not to take the RCA connectors that are taped to the rear of the radio, as they are for the sub woofer channels. You will need the removal tools that were included with your bike, don't attempt to remove the radio without it as you will damage it.

Here are some other things I figured out:

You will need to pick a good place for your antenna. I am not sure I have the ideal spot. It must be removed when I cover the bike, and it seems to be loose now.

You will need to tune your antenna. I called Sierra, and they told me I can do that by just setting the squelch so I can hear it and then adjusting the antenna with the small screwdriver they supplied so the white noise sounds the loudest. You don't need a special meter like the instructions indicate. I wish they would have put this in the instructions, as it was very stressful to figure all this out!!!!!

Re-install the fuse over top of the wire (see my last post) this will stop the beeping from the seatbelt or door fuse.

You need to find a good place to locate the main control unit. I think I found the best place. I was not going to give up the spot I have my storage pouch, and I believe mounting it to the left side works better because you don't have to take your eyes off the road to see the Chanel's.

Take a look at the picture, It relay works great in this location. It is easy to key the mike on the CB with your left hand. I located it so I can see the channel indicator through the left opening in the steering wheel.

Be careful when you are putting the body panels back on so you do not crimp a wire and cause a short. The way I mounted the main unit
may require shorter mounting bolts, and I needed to trim the fiberglass to allow it to sit flush. Watch out for a piece of the frame that may interfere with the location too.

I have seen some installations where they installed the bracket upside down, so if you do it yourself, or pay someone, take a look how it is done on the Stallions it is installed so you don't see it, as opposed to other motorcycles where you see the mount.

Overall the kit works great. I still have a very slight engine whine (the kit has a noise isolator to cut down on this) but is it so faint the wind quickly drowns it out. I am very satisfied with it. It works great with the factor installed sound system. I had to buy a lower cord with a volume control, as the intercom only has one volume control on it. With two people you will want to be able to adjust it so both people are happy.

To sum this up, I would recommend the Sierra Electronics kit. It is a great system. Once installed it works great! But, you may want to find someone to install it for you if you are not very technical.
