Default OEM honda shock spring replacement.

    I have a 2005 Honda Gl1800 with a Lehman Monarch 2 trike kit.

My tires were rubbing my fenders going over bumps with 2 up.

I have done a ton of research on here and have purchased the updated spring for the Bike part of the trike.

My pump doesn't start till 12. So I've lost half of the support that is needed.

I asked the dealer what it would cost and take to do this. $3000. They said they would have to not only take the tupperware off, including the gas tank and also the Trike fenders, trunk, etc as a whole.

I looked and can take the Actuator off and also the shock from the bottom side, but I cant get them out as a unit. Meaning the hose would have to be taken off the actuator and fed under the tank and pulled out with the shock from the bottom side.

Is there a reason that I can't take the hose off the Actuator and pull it out with the shock.

Is oil going to run out?

Can I refill with new oil?

Happy New Year and thanks in advance for any help.

I believe the body has to come off to access what you need to solve the pump problem. The cost you were quoted seems a bit high to me. One of the issues that makes the pump "lazy" at the lower numbers is that Honda utilizes a rubber hose between the pump and shock. That hose over time weakens and expands. Part of the fix is to replace it with a braded metal hose. No more flex and expansion. Good luck..... Jim

I have not done this myself but I have posts in the past that I believe detailed the procedure.

If you want to top off the pump, you can access it from the right wheel well. I jacked mine up and was able to access the pump and take the hose off and refill it so it starts at 1 . Mine was almost like yours it started at 11. With your Lehman shock do you have the preload at the 4th setting on the shock. I set my Lehman shock for 2 people and then adjust the honda shock for single riding. When I 1st bought my trike the dealer told me about adjusting the Honda shock and said I would never had to adjust the other. I was getting a rough ride and found the lehman shock on the softest setting. If you decide to refill the shocks pump MAKE SURE the setting is on 1 when you go to refill it,and MAKE SURE you mark the direction of the hose when you take it apart.

Default Thank you all for the advice.

I really love riding this trike. Its new to me and showroom clean even though it's a 2005 with 5000 miles. It's kinda like my new baby. But when I feel that the Dealer is trying to rip me off, I put my trust in my gut and set out to find out as much as i can and then make the decision whether to seek another dealer 200 miles away or do it myself. I'm leaning doing it myself.

For future reference, do any of you know of a video or explicit how-to instruction on how to remove to trike body. Leyman Monarch II

As long as you have the top shelter off and if youre not sure what maintenance was done I would change the air filter and put screen on the intakes because of mice and such. Also if theres any aftermarket lighting,I would check connections and routing so that you dont encounter future issues. Can I ask what setting was your lehman shock set at?

    Mick;

The Lehman shock was a Progressive. It was set on the highest setting. Leaking. The 2nd owner (6 Months) purchased another and gave it to me.

I installed the new one and it was set on the middle setting. I put 100 miles on it with just me before I got the tool to set it at the highest setting. I haven't ridden it yet, waiting on Brake shoes and then 17 degree weather kinda slowes the riden progress down.

Lee H Mann (RIP) Said the original Bike shock for that year 05-07 was the stock spring. He said to replace the spring which I have purchased.

I spoke with Fred Harmon, and he suggested the pump test. It starts to labor at 12.

    So I have 2 problems.

I can get the Bike shock off with just taking the seat and side covers off. But then can't remove the pump with it as a whole unit. I've never done well with the 20 something kid at the dealer telling me I can't do that.

I would imagine you guys know all this already, it just helps me to write it down in the explanation.

I had my spring replaced in 08 with the progressive on the Lehman shock,in 2014 I had to replace the lehman shock as it was leaking oil. Too many years of 2 up riding with a trailer I guess. Sadly with Lehman out of business back then if you had an issue with rubbing they gave you a Progressive spring to replace the stock spring on the shock. The dealer would replace it free of charge. With the Monarch IIs they were finding out this was an issue with 2 up riding and supposedly after 08 the Progressive was stock on the kits. On the pump I removed the right wheel and with the trike up on jackstands I was able to get the pump off of the frame and refilled. That was around 8-9 or even more years ago and it still starts at 1.

    Mick

Well come to find out while jacking it up my Swing Arm Isolator Bushings are shot. The axle drops about 2 inchs once i get the wheels to clear the ground. This is another project I've never done. I've looked everywhere and haven't been able to find a how to anything to replace these. Any of you folks ever done this?

Ive never done it but sadly because its a Lehman we are pretty much on our own.

    https://www.manualslib.com/manual/93...page=17#manual

M&J might have the parts you need ,sadly Jims gone but supposedly someone is trying to sell the parts he had. If no luck try Niehaus cycles in Litchfield Il.
