Lehman Running Boards

Had a set of the Lehman running boards installed today ... have a problem with them ... the rubber pads for the top of the boards will not stick ... there seems to be a problem with the glue ... anyone heard of this problem?

FYI - thats a fairly easy fix. Just get a small can of rubber cement, the kind with the brush already in the lid of the can.

Clean off the old residue from both the pad backs and the mounting surface.

Brush a coat of rubber cementon the back of the pads and a coat on the surface where they are to stick. Let the cement set for about 15-20 minutes (no longer than 1/2 hour) and then carefully place the pads in place.

Be sure you get the pads correctly positioned as you put them down. They will not move like liquid adhesives. When you stick them in place, they are there to stay but any excess cement arount the edges will pull right off.

I always use 3M Super 77 spray on adhesive, had bonding issues (due to the glue) on several running board pads from various manufacturers over the years and have gone to this adhesive on all the pads I install. Some glues just dont like the oils in the rubber mats. This stuff is available at most auto parts stores, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.

I had mine installed by a friend, they look great and I know they are bolted underneath, but I rode from Maryland to NC this weekend, lots of bumps and I noticed on the bottom that the adhesive is already loose and if you look closely you can see the space at the seams, I have a friend with a CSC kit and his is actually bolted on the outside with 3 bolts and I think that is what I may have to do, other than that they really look nice, haven't had a chance to take a picture, had some oil leak on this trip and because of the running boards, no one could see where it was coming from, got it to a HD and they said it was a gasket on the oil pan, they tightened everything up and told me it was safe to drive home to Maryland on............so I will have to take that in to the shop for replacement

+1 on that stuff! leaves an even coat of adhesive.

Yep, its an even application all the way to the edges, leaves no bumps or air gaps and stays on. I first place the mats where I want them on the running boards, mark them lightly by running a mechanical pencil line around the outside of each so I can line them up when Im ready to glue them down. To apply the glue I lay each rubber mat one at a time upside down on a piece of cardboard or newspaper, spray on an even coat, let it sit 3-4 minutes (per the directions) until tacky then place it as marked and repeat. Be sure and apply the adhesive one mat at a time so you wont have to rush the application. If the glue drys too long before you stick the mat to the running board, you risk poor adhesion. Its not impossible to remove them if you should ever need to, but the sun, wind and rain wont make them turn loose.

I have had trouble with the common adhesive, which is very popular, to break down in the heat. I have switched to silicone for most every application. One other advantage with silicone is, there is some time to move things around before it sets up. My 2 cents.
