Default How does HD stay in business...?

So to make a long story short. P.O. of my 2014 TG cross threaded a wheel stud and of course it broke off. I figured one of the local HD dealerships would have one. NOPE! Not 1 dealership out of the 26 that I called in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, or Kansas had a wheel stud in stock. I know that HD make a lot of their money on routine services (oil, fluids, and tires) but why do they NOT keep any actual parts in stock anymore? This is why motorcycles never became a primary mode of transportation in the US like they did in Europe. What happens when you break down in Colorado SPrings on your way hame and no one, and I mean NO ONE (not even NAPA Auto Parts) has a freaking wheel stud or some other part? You are just stuck like Chuck. Fortunatley Pikes Peak HD ordered me one and had it expedited and it "should" be here by Friday so i can get my trike back in the garage before weather hits this weekend. Sorry for the rant.

    Keep the rubber-side down...

They stay in business by not having money tied up in the stock room with odd parts that will sit for years collecting dust… Being the devil’s advocate how often does one need a wheel stud ….?

You probably could have gone to just about any auto parts store and found a 1/2-20 tpi wheel stud and pressed it into the axle. I have been in a local Pep Boys store and they have had about 20-30 different drawers of different wheel studs.

I only time I have a broken wheel stud was with my 1968 Dodge charger for some insane reason Dodge decided that left handed threads on the right side of the vehicle will be prudent.. And twice when was rushing to change tires at the dragstrip I grabbed my trustee oversize Breaker bar and caveman style snapped a stud trying to Loosen by turning counterclockwise 😱…

I know what you mean. My 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix has those too. I always need to stop and think when removing wheel nuts.

I agree, HD dealers are keeping less and less parts and accessories in stock. However, dealers can get them shipped in, or in most cases shipped directly to the customers home in 3 or 4 days.

I wonder if HD dealerships aren't making most of their money from tee shirts and other HD branded nicknacks. It seems when I visit a dealership there might be a couple bike shoppers but another dozen or so folks buying clothing and other junk.

@ $30-40 dollars per T shirt, they will continue to flourish, nevermind many parts have been backordered for months. Do not bother ordering online either, many of the hard parts you are looking for are back ordered also
