When you purchase a used trike in tenessee are the plates removed and registration cancelled or are the plates left on the trike and the reg just transferred to the new owner? Can anyone recommend where to get insurance on the trike for a couple of weeks? I beleive that the bill of sale has to be signed by a "Notorary Public". Is this true? What or who is a "notorary public" and how would I find one. Is it the buyers or the sellers responsibilty to get this signed? Hope you guys can help me with this.

when u buy a Car what do you do in TENN. All rules should be the same . We need no Notary in Conn. We turn in the plates new are issued, Insurance can be almost anyone . I have Progressive , some have Giko or Allstate, there are a ton of them check with who you insure your home or car with . Most banks or lending institutions have a Notary or go to your Town Hall ... hope I helped a little . not living in Tenn ( I live in Conn., the toughest state in the USA to register anything )

Plates and registration is cancelled. Title is tranfered to new owner. Bill of sell can be used as proof of ownership until paperwork is completed. New owner has the responsibility to get New title, registration and plates. Many states give new owner several days to get paperwork submitted. Notary Public is used to "notarize selllers signature". Who pays notary could be either party.

Expect it is similar to Virginia - they require the transfer signature from the last owner on the title and a Bill of Sale (easy to put together - the DMV has samples) to title and register the trike in your name. While the DMV doesn't require it, you'll also need the safety inspection in case John Law should happen to notice your trike. Virginia doesn't require emission inspection on bikes or trikes.

A notary public is someone who is licensed to witness signatures and administer oaths, among other things, so often a notary's signature is needed to attest that your signature is actually yours on official documents. You can find a notary easily--they're often located at UPS stores. They charge a small fee and will ask to see your ID--the whole thing shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

For the rest of your questions, a phone call to your state Department of Motor Vehicles may help. In Florida, registering a trike is just like registering any motorcycle or car, but the rules may be different in Tennessee.

Tennessee Titles no longer require a Notary Public, and Bills of Sale are no longer required at Court Houses. The Title is the Registration and Bill of Sale. The Title has a place on the back for "Signature of Seller(s), Address, Amount of Sale, and Printed Name", also a section for "Signature of Buyer, Odometer Reading, and Address". Old License Tag, and Registration are no longer legal. The New Owner must apply for a Title, Tag, and purchase Insurance. The New Owner will be given a Registration Slip at the County Clerk's Office that shows "Ownership, Tag Number, and Registration". Insurance is then purchased elsewhere at an Insurance Agent's Office......actually much simpler than in the past......

Usually, a number of lawyers are Notary Publics. They can also be found in banks. You may want to check with seller if they have a bank account near purchase location. If they have an account, there may be no charge for service. You will probably need to take paperwork to a DMV (Dept. of Motor Vehicles or whatever they use in TN).But what the heck do I know? I live in New York (oh, yeah, that does make me a Know It All). Enjoy whatever riding you have planned around the USA.

A few years ago I bought a 1980 R-65 in Tennessee and it came with no licence plate. A bit of cardboard and a few numbers fixed that til I got to my mother's place a few states away and paid the town tax and was issued a shiny new plate before heading for the haul road in Alaska, 2-up with camping gear.
