    Default Parking brake cable

    On a Facebook trike site someone asked a question about replacing the parking brake cable, the reason... the dealer told him that it can only be adjusted so many times before it needs replaced. Now we all know that cables do stretch but I have adjusted mine maybe 6-8 times then once I replaced the rear pads I got some of my adjustment back. We all know that the dealers will try and blow smoke up peoples posterior, so how many have replaced their parking brake cable.

    What my 2011 Triglide I never had to replace the cables and almost 50,000 miles of riding on a 2017 I didn’t have it long enough to worry about it..And my 2019 I only have 8000 miles on it… All that said I very really used the parking brake and when I do use it I don’t smash it down as far as it will go I also always park in gear…

    I would imagine if some people have a habit of smashing it down as far as it will ratchet it would stretch to the point where it needed to be replaced..🤔..

    Well I did a lot of brake work in my day. But I never saw a cable stretch. So they screwed up something trying to adjust it or he looks like a push over. Just my opinion and you know what they say about that.

    Just wondering and this is not about the parking cable, can a person take the pedal and the whole parking brake assembly off, I have never used it on my 2018 and when I put the lift kit on I had one heck of time getting those bolts broke loosed to get it out of the way to install the lift kit. Just curious if anybody has did this or is it even feasiable to do.

    I have never in all my years of wrenching seen a cable stretch, I have seen frozen and broken cables

    I have replaced a lot of cables over the years, but not because of stretching

    🤔 Fraser’s directory…When a load is initially applied to a wire rope, the rope

    rapidly stretches as it adjusts to the operating

    conditions. After that initial phase, the stretching slows

    significantly and remains low for the majority of the rope's

    lifespan.

    You might want to check with your DMV before removing parking brake

    It is there for a reason, just sayin

    You might have a point there, never thought of that, it is liscense as a motorcycle and 2 wheelers don't have a parking brake, just saying, guess I will call sometime if I don't forget LOL

    If you Remove the parking brake And park

    it without leaving it in gear or tie the hand brake down (Velcro) on a slight incline the machine will roll away…

    For the amount of pressure it takes for me to apply the parking brake on my Tri Glide I really can't understand why there would be any amount of stretching. One click or two clicks is all I need and that bike not going anywhere. There's no sense in pushing that pedal all the way down....... if properly adjusted.

    You are correct sir

    Anyone that has ever owned a Chrysler or Jeep product, your parking brake cables were factory adjusted too tight back in the day of drum brakes

    It did NOT stretch the cables, it did cause rear brake shoes to wear prematurely

    It was common when doing a rear brake job to de adjust the cable prior to installing new shoes

    Definitely agree-proper adjustment is the key…….108 K on my 2010 HD trike and original cable.

    I rarely used the parking brake on the 2011 Tri Glide. I did have to adjust it a few times, but never had to replace rear brake pads. 60K+ miles

    I used it all the time on the 2014 TG. Never had to adjust it or replace rear brake pads. 60K+ miles

    I use it all the time on the 2019 TG, have not had to adjust it or replace the rear brake pads.
